I thought it was ridiculous when the US cracked down on Joe Camel because the cartoon picture was supposed to appeal to kids. That's nothing compared to a 30 second cartoon commercial with a catchy jingle and happy anthropomorphic forest animals.
Hamm's was off the market briefly when I was a kid and the joke that was going around the playground was, "Why did they stop selling Hamm's beer? Because they found the bear pissing in the sky blue waters." (I don't make 'em up, folks, I just pass 'em along).
I was around when this commercial was airing, but I can't say I remember it. Must of been a little too young, but I remember my Dad and Mom drinking a lot of Hamm,s bear in Oklahoma.
A local bar has a crappy beer night once a week. Love drinking the Hamms, Schlitz, Falstaff, Storz, Pabst, Oly. and Old Style. Now that is real bear. No light cra*.
This beer wasn't available in the Northeast where I grew up so I didn't see that ad until I saw a thing on TV about old commercials. I have another Hamm's ad with the bear on a DVD of classic TV ads.
The Land of Sky Blue Water is definitely Minnesota. The word Minnesota comes from the Dakota name for the Minnesota River: Mnisota. The root Mni (also spelled mini or minne) means, "water". Mnisota can be translated as sky-tinted water.
mmmmm@:0:25.. that is one delicious, refreshing looking beer! There is nothing wrong with beer. Like my Daddy always said.." It's just cereal in a can..wheat, hops, barley..everything the body needs!" LOL and he's right!
Great video, I love these kind of family friendly commercials and cartoons. It is a shame something like this is not allowed. But sex on commerfials is allowed. Again I say as I have many times on Youtube, our countrys morals has gone to HELL.
I finally seen a hamms commercial!, why? because i work at a famous daves in colorado and we sell hamms in a can. and people are always shocked that we carry it and they always talk about the great commercials, had to see it for myself....
In the sixties my aunt put one of those blue toilet bowl fresheners in their toilet . I was about five and asked her why the water was blue and she said my uncle drank so much Hamm's he was pi----ing sky blue water.
The old Hamm's brewery is still standing in ruins in St. Paul (last I looked anyway, with the way they tear things down around here it could be gone and I just didn't hear about it while I've been out of town). I think Miller purchased rights to Hamm's recipee and name. My family drank Hamm's, Hauenstein, Grain Belt and Schmidt when I was a child growing up in Bloomington, MN. Every weekend they all drank beer, the adults around had to have been loaded all the time with all the cases I recall.
BTW/I recently found Hauenstein in a small liquor store. It looked exactly as I recalled it from childhood, so I purchased a twelve pack. I thought it tasted like crap, but who am I to say...my favorite beer is either Miller Lite or Coor's Lite.
@SS421982 the hamm's brewery in st. paul, minnesota is not in ruins. it is no longer in use, but it is still there. hamm's beer was founded and brewed in st. paul, minnesota from 1865 until sometime in the 1990's when the original owners had to unfortunately close down the brewery and sell the brand & recipe (due to financial hardships) to one of the national beer conglomerates. i believe that was miller, which is now owned by another international conglomerate........miller-coors.
@TheRealBetaband Have you seen the inside? I only said it was ruined because I've looked at photos from people who sneak in and take shots of the interior. Any old building that's sitting in Minnesota and not being used for many years...is basically ruined (I'm a Mpls native). I did a search and found the photos.... it was interesting.
wow really loved this commercial, i remember back in chicago on friday nights in the late fifties my dad would watch the friday night fights and this commercial would always be on there, just to here it brings you back there.....just closing my eyes and remembering..... oh yeah, and cracking open a cold one!
awesome marketing back then..I NEVER see hamm's on the shelves anymore, maybe its a regional thing? I live in Seattle, WA - land of the $9 6-pack of microbrews
My parents grew up in the san francisco during the 50's and 60's and recall the Hamm's brewey on 17th and poetreo across the street from seal stadium. The beer glass and sign would lite up at night time you could see it from the central freeway the building is still there ,and their is alot of pictures inside the building of the glass and sign that were on top of the building.
I remember watching this commercial on a old black and white 19 inch TV with rabbit ears, that picked up 3 channels, well 2 if it was raining. Early 60s? Thamks for the memories.
Now I watch TV on a 46 inch, high def, LCD, surround sound, flat screen that, no kidding, receives over 200 channels, but yanno I don't think it can ever take the place of watching tv when I was 6 with my mom and dad brother and sister gathered around that little old tv.
I remember the same thing. About 3 channels is all we got. I was mostly into cartoons but was usually too busy outside playing to watch much else. One Saturday morning I decided to turn off a great cartoon and figured I would "save" it till later. Boy was I bummed when I turned the tv on later and couldn't finish watching it.
I was just watching Rainier commercials & when I thought of beer commercials when I was a kid, the Hamm's song & the Hamm's Bear are the first that leapt to mind. Too bad the beer was so bad(although better than Schlitz)
WOW!! I've found the mother lode!! I talked about this commercial with others around my age, and we always said these were such cool commercials!! We still remembered the song, too! LOL! Thanks a million for posting this!
I cannot WAIT to show this to my husband! He's always singing this song and saying how he used to get so excited when these comercials would come on TV. I almost thought he was making it up! He's from Wisconsin (maybe that's the "land of sky blue water") and I'm from Texas. Many Thanks!
