It seems like everyone is calling both Anita and Maria bitches, guys, they're teenagers who are both in love. Anita most likely sees the death of Riff as rightous, and therefore doesn't think of Bernardo as a killer. And Maria is a young girl, she's in love and is probably on a major adreneline high giving the fact that her brother died, she lost her virginity and she planned to run away all on the same night. Cut her some slack!

She never showed emotion for her brother after he was killed or never even showed sympathy for Anita. Also, they were both portrayed to be young adolescents in the film. Why couldn't they wait until they were older and able to move away before dating? Why date in secret? That plan just seemed very poorly thought-out to me. Also it irked me when Maria begged Tony to stop the gang fight.

Besides, why did he have to stop the fight alone? I don't understand why Maria didn't go with him to stop it since it apparently mattered so much to her.
