Just think if Harry, Kyle, or Mark had won the championship. That would've easily been the biggest one-race jump to the lead in NASCAR history. No one would've beaten such a record.
No chase and still 6 drivers mathematically eligible at the season finale. Just proves there's no need to artificially generate a close points battle at the end of season like we do for the chase. They should use their "have at it boys" apply to the points system as well. Let the drivers sort it out over the course of the year and some years you will have it close like in 92' and other years maybe one driver will dominate but leave the points alone and not reset them with 10 races to go.
It is my belief that the last two months of the 1992 season (and, of course, this race) has resulted in the current unrest we have today regarding the format of the point system. Brian France wants 1992 to be every year. Unfortunately, you just cannot engineer this kind of drama. Until they learn to leave it alone, they will keep over-manufacturing the product and driving the loyalists further away. Btw, I was a huge Rick Mast fan...it killed me to see Brett Bodine tag him on the first lap.
This was my first NASCAR race, it's so disappointing that they didn't have pre-race coverage back then like they do now. Instead of a fly over they had four AH-64 Apache's hovering over the infield, then the Apahce's flew above Richard Petty during his pace laps. My Dad and I were just talking about this last weekend, still the coolest thing we've ever seen at a race! I've looked all over for video of this but haven't been able to find it anywhere.

@starclassics Exactly 100%, totally correct. It boggles my mind why NASCAR doesn't see what it has done and doesn't start taking steps to reverse some of the stupid decisions they've made over the last 10-15 years. It's amazing to watch a race and see entire sections of empty grandstands. NASCAR wants to say "it's the economy"....I say "it's you NASCAR".
lee petty past the torch to richard petty richard past the torch to dale earnhardt dale past it to jeff gordon jeff past it to tony stewart tony past it to jimmie johnson who is next
Jimmie is not the best, the men mentioned before proved themselves for full 30+ race seasons. The douche in the 48 car sand bags then proves himself for 10 races.
@racermac1988 i completely agree. he wouldn't win championships under the old system. technically as of now he only has 2 overall championships, carl has 1 (2008), kurt busch has 0 (jeff gordon would've won 2004), and gordon would have six (the last two being busch's 2004 title and johnson's 2007 title).
Either Joey Logano or Brad Keselowski. Also, there's a kid by the name of Parker Kliggerman who tore up the field in ARCA as a rookie, I think he could be a damn good Cup driver in the future.
This is THE greatest race in the modern era of NASCAR; hands down. The King's last race, Gordon's first race; the incredible championship battle with 2 of the contenders losing their lives the next year; absolutely stunning!
this was without a doubt one of the best and most emotion filled season ending races ever, 5 guys having a chance at a championship. I cried when davey got wrecked and it was over for him. alan winning the championship by his way and not someone elses is an example that big time teams dont always win championships
this was the best season finale ever. petty was running his last race, gordon was starting his first, and 5 guys going for the title. not to mention 2 of the title contenders were tragically killed the following year. it is a shame that they were killed prematurely, but still this race is one of the all time best for sure.
they didnt really care that he swore, nor did they fine him i believe. NASCAR was better when it was more driver, not car like it is now. And the money has gotten to NASCARs head, this is suposed to be a racing sport, not a f*king commercial flyer!!
Thanks for uploading this race!

That was Davey's year to win the Cup. Such a shame. Ernie redeemed himself for that a few years later.

How about we reset the points at 36 races to go and everyone gets reset to 0

And to think all this excitement happened without a chase, green white checkards, double file restarts, phantom cautions, lucky dogs, etc.!
