If someone likes this song, there is a curious version in the film "The silence before Bach" (Die stille vor Bach, in german, or El silencio antes de Bach, in spanish, the languages in which the film was made). with the lyrics changed narrating the story that tells how Mendelssohn discovered the scores of St Matthew's Passion by Bach. I highly reccommend it for curious people ;) It's in youtube , anyway!
Yes, this song is a dream, which includes another, eternal dream at the end. It is a hymn.
Her voice is very pure honey, maybe too much honey. I love her, but she does not make any effort to understand what the poem is about. A very beautiful, but a little flat version of the original Heine-Mendelssohn poem.
wonder voice and singer. I always loved her perfect voice. but for me this is a bit too fast. the tempo should be more relaxed. although the voice is relaxed as possible.
I love the fact that she doesn't turn it into a Lutheran hymn but sings it at a flowing tempo, with a minimum of sentimentality and a maximum of classical luminosity. That way it is expressive without getting sticky.
I must come back and say here we have one of the sweetest voices of the 20th.Century.Capable of COMMUNICATING through her voice. Sadly she died in 2005, but we have her voice on Wendy's site, and mine.A very shy Lady of Spain, who didn't seek fame or fortune. She lived to sing.Sadly missed.
Absolute perfection. Victoria de los Angeles at her best. A beautiful voice singing a "Well kent" melody. From what I know of VdlA, she too would enjoy the singing, and the song.
A lovely lilting song and sung by the loveliest voice. Well done to give us the words. It doubles the pleasure. I'm sure they are just as poetic in Chinese.
Dear Barry, Thank you for the comment. I am glad that you like it too. Yes, the chinese lyrics, by some unknown person, is very beautiful as well. I felt fortunate that this song was in our high school corriculum; that was how I knew of it. Sincerely, Wendy

Far too fast. Isobel Baillie's version is much better. I think the violin transcriptions are more moviing.

A great artist, who has left memories of unsurpassable elegance, both as a singer and as a human being. Tks for sharing this.

Her voice is really beautiful, but IMHO it is too quick. If you hear the version of Lotte Lerhrmann you will see what I mean.
It's a song about love and ends with eternal dream, so perhaps a little slower would have been nicer.
