If you translate these statements into an algebra problem where x is the chance that you can, and the chance that you cannot is 1 - x, then x + 1 - x = 1, so his statement is true.

If you have an index card that one one side says the statement on the other side is true (x), while on other side it says the statement on the other side is false (1 - x), that translates to an algebra problem were x = 1 - x, so x equals a half - both statements are half true.
