in undergrad, a friend from africa wanted to prove his point that us americans know nothing about his continent. he asked me to name as many countries there as i could. needless to say i froze and failed to even stutter out egypt. i can name with ease probably 25 african countries & my favorite game as a kid was to do geography quizzes w/ my dad and sis over the world map that served as table cloth on our dining room table (i'm a nerd, i know), but we all have moments of stupidity. shrug
So great. Granted, I don't know geography as much as I should...but omg. Ugh.
I remember after 9/11 news crews would go onto the streets with maps and ask people to point out various places in the middle east. NO ONE knew where ANYTHING was. I didn't know -every- place but I knew a good chunk and I at least knew the general location.
I remember people pointing to places like Spain and France going "Iran and Iraq, right?" *dies*
