@BronzeSista I think that most of their tribes have a blood quota, if you meet that then they can enroll you as one of their tribal members. You have to prove that with a birth certificate and both or one of your parents are an enrolled member or actually live on a reservation. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe requires at least a quarter blood line to apply, most of the time the parent who is living there or is a member they simply enroll the kids when they are allowed.

Because we're under the rule of the Crown (Queen in England) we follow the Royal Proclamation, which basically states that North America belongs to the "Indian" people, or the people they discovered upon contact. She told me that the Elders of the tribe her mother is a part of do not recognize her as an Indian, but as a white woman. She told me when she went to the school to talk to the kids about Native Americans they kept saying you're not a real Indian you're a white woman. @BronzeSista I think that most of their tribes have a blood quota, if you meet that then they can enroll you as one of their tribal members. You have to prove that with a birth certificate and both or one of your parents are an enrolled member or actually live on a reservation. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe requires at least a quarter blood line to apply, most of the time the parent who is living there or is a member they simply enroll the kids when they are allowed.

Its complicated because "race" and ethnicity are two very separate things. As are religion and "race". Race is a social construct anyway that has absolutely no true significance other that what we give it and some minor biological variations due to genetic isolation. When he saw the American caribbean islands natives, he thought they were Indians from India, thus wrongly called them Indians. They were native Americans from Latin America(tuhe Caribbean. p.s. Because, we are not exactly Indians. A more correct description of Native American Indians would be First People or Indigenous People. However, those are just words. @Gulfporter I'm not versed in American Law, but I agree that likely the American Indians aren't the first race in North America. Laws based on being "indigenous" don't really apply here in Canada. Because we're under the rule of the Crown (Queen in England) we follow the Royal Proclamation, which basically states that North America belongs to the "Indian" people, or the people they discovered upon contact. Of course, no british rule left in the U.S.A

I think you should not connect yourself with the term "Indian" and start connecting yourself with your fathers people. Is he Anishnaabe? Haudenosaunee? Mushkegowuk? Piikani? There are so many Peoples across this land, this land is as rich in culture as it is in biodiversity. Start with who you are, not what Canada says you are.

You can contact an attorney so you can use your documents proving you are one. If you feel identified to your ancestry, or just want to take advantages of quotas, you have the right of being of Indian descent.

1) Indians are the people of India.
2) "Indians" are a mythological people, created as part of, & existing solely within Anglo-North American mythology.

You do know that the Canadian government can only skew one of those perspectives don't you? If you're looking for political benefits then you should continue your search, but I'm pretty sure you know your biological and cultural constituents.

Indians are from India (yes, that country in the south of Asia). Canadian government and english speakers don't even know what this people are. That's very sad. In spanish we call them "aborígenes" to distinguish them from Indians "indios".

@bpatterson25 to add to that, When Columbus landed he saw the first inhabitants and he did not call them Indians.... He refered to the as "Indios" which meant by god, He called them this because of the way they lived off the land so close with nature and the natural world. I was not until later that they were then called "Indian"

If you're indian then be indian, learn ur language and the true history of your people. You don't need your goverment to tell you what you are, unless you want the free stuff.

for starters bro, ur not stupid. Goverments do not recognize some desendents because of monetary reasons. Down here in the states, individuals must provide proof of indian blood in order to get a CDIB card. CDIB cards are given to individuals that meet that tribes blood quantum minimum.

Well I believe that you are Native if you are born that way. What I mean by that is you have some kind of family member that has native ancestry. If your father has a status card, then he must have some kind of native in him. I think that if you have a native heart and you believe in your culture, and also respect your elders that right there sounds like native to me. I know one thing you have a really good attitude about it.

An 'indian' is a British imperialist's label for anyone they surpassed and whose country they colonised. 'Indian' is not an ethnicity. Just as 'India' (the country) was fabricated since the British invasion, from being lots of smaller countries with individual cultures and languages.
For example Afro Carribeans are considered to be 'West Indian', Native American are labelled as 'Red Indians' and Asians are 'East Indians'. I think we should reject this label and celebrate our true heritage.

The word Indian is like calling a Black person the n-word. Because in truth we are not indians, we are the true Natives of Canada. Indians (from India) have one of the oldest living civilizations in the world originating from the Indus valley and going back at least 5000+ years. Positively ANCIENT!
Also India is home to some of the oldest religions in the world, such as BUDDHISM, HINDUISM & JAINISM which all pre-date Christianity!
India's cultural beliefs, food, dress, music, philosopies and art are so vibrant, rich and ancient. . .compared to Native American heritage. They are definitely not the same people!

Do you know what else isnt fair? My grandma was sent to a school where she was made to be a white person and told her beliefs and culture were "NOT AS A GREAT COMPARED TO" white culture. So its cool to hear that its not just white people who share their sentiment.
I think its kind of messed up darkheart110 that you're so keen on keeping people stuck in these little groups all properly labeled.We cant possibly have two different cultures called the same thing, than one cant pretend to be better

I think the term 'Indian' should be scrapped with regards to Native Americans.
Native Americans should either be referred to as 'Natives' or 'Native Americans'.
It is not fair on the real Indians from India to be confused with a whole completely different ethnic group that lives on the other side of the world from them, just because of Columbus's geographical mistake.

Okay can we please get over the fact that, YES WE'VE ALL HEARD THE CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS STORY, however, native americans are still considered "Indians" in some regions of the world.
As mentioned, in Canada, legally I'm considered an Indian as described my native status card.
It kind of pisses me off when "whiteys" tell me what I can and cannot call myself. I consider myself Indian.

Hey, I don't know aobut Cnanda but in the US you have to be, I think, 20% or more. Now, if your father was 25% and you're ma has less than 25% then you would have a tough time. You could try taking a dna test. Since your father is a card carrier maybe all they need is proof.

Actually, if you've ever attended a university lecture based around the americas (north and south) you'd know that the term Indian is used to describe the native and aboriginal people discovered by explorers. I'm about as worried about the gov't giving me money as Ford, GMC, and Chrysler.
