  • only good 1-turbochargers r bac. and to others to bad, you didn't like real close, side by side racing, must like chasin the leader racin!

  • And this isn't even an exhaustive account (pardon the pun) of engine failures in this race, there were at least 3 more engine/engine-related failures besides this. Kenny Brack's turbo went pop, Franchitti had an engine go bang, Tagliani and Castroneves crashed on their own oil when their engines went boom, and Tracy's plenum chamber took to the skies, and the pop-off valve claimed da Matta's suspension...

  • Fuck the IRL. CART all the way!

  • I was at this epic race! Rain delayed too. Only 6 cars finished. Christian Fittipaldi won this race

  • I heard they lost so many cars in that race due to engines and wrecks, the pace car eventually won the checkered flag.

  • CART was a great organization... dominating North America (US/Canada) and going overseas (europe, brazil, japan).. it´s a shame that this is over....

if they kept going and added some non-oval racetracks they would threat F1 for sure

  • é um festival de quebra de motores

  • I remember watching this race. It rained out on Sunday and they finished the race on Monday, that's why the stands were so empty. Back then California used to sell out, when they were still fan friendly. I remember being "sick" that day and I stayed home from school to watch the race. Only 6 out of 25 drivers ended up finishing this race. Alex Tagliani was the last to guy to retire and finished 6th ahead of Tarso Marques who was still running.

  • How did Gary Gerould know that it was Memo that blew up. He was going 240mph+

  • wow, CART engines blew up on past and future (at the time) f1 drivers: Shinji Nakano (1998), Mark Blundell (1995) and Juan Pablo Montoya (2001)...

bit of a coincidence, considering the F1 vs CART argument below lol

  • As to the F1 vs CART argument, oval driving and circuit driving are two totally different disciplines that require different skillsets. Only a handful of people have crossed between the two successfully, and I mean getting more than a handful of wins in both (ruling out underachievers like Montoya)

  • these are how indycars SHOULD look like

  • I miss CART...

  • Wow, a Coyne car was running third before the engine blew...

  • @hollywoodsheen - you ever seen how Indycars are these days? CART really had someething to do with that right? Keep drinking that Tony George koolaid bub...

Regardless of what CART did or did not do, Tony George eventually screwed it up... for everybody!!! I REST MY CASE

  • Thank you very much TONY flocking GEORGE for your oh so wonderful legacy... you will definitely go down in history as the greatest screw-up that ever had the privilege of inheriting something valuable and totally devaluing it.

  • @55Superfly55 it was just as much CART's fault as Tony's. They did some really stupid things that buried their series

  • @55Superfly55 Dont forget A.J Foyt who pushed him to do it, that dumb jack-off

  • @55Superfly55 Wait a minute, you can't just come and throw stones at TG, there must have been something good he's done for American Open-wheel racing, like...

    ...

    ...

    ...

OK, there are some stones for you, throw them at TG...

  • damn, those cars were fast. much faster than F1

  • @Talladega93 different type of racing, of course these are faster, they're running on ovals

  • @HollywoodSheen yes i know but CART cars were fast too on road courses

  • Man... I miss CART so much, it was so awesome. All types of courses, ovals, tracks, street, high speed ones, tricky ones, drivers all around the globe... overtaking... pure racing... sigh...

  • Now Chip Fatassi nows how we felt. Although I'd rather kick his ass instead!!

  • What a shame for the Englishman, he had to lead the race for the first time since 1997 and then went up in smoke.

  • At 2:12, Onboard with the 1997 championship contender Mark Blundell.

The smoke is coming out, WHERE DO YOU GO!

  • That ended his great career in ChampCar 1997-2000.

  • Why champcar trun a way from Cart2000speed to F1 crap in 2007 .

  • sorry didnt mean to call u dumb....

  • well i know that but there was a time where indy cars where really fast and ttheu had to lower the speed becuase it was a danger haz. but yeah ur right but wats good about IRL and Champ car is that there are drivers from all over the world racing but its a U.S. sport same thing with the LeMans series. but thats like F1

  • btw i thinnk they both BLOW F1 out the water

  • Man, what an engine blow-up for the 1997championship contender Mark Blundell.

  • skynet091287

dude ur dumb....I.R.L. and CHART (champ car) they do race course, btw CHART can race in the rain to, just light drops....not havy rain.

  • I was just saying that they ALSO run ovals, that's the problem. The reason why F1 don't run the oval when they raced in the US, where because the F1 cars was way to fast for the track. Thats why the Indy 500 stopped counting towards the F1world championship.

And by the way, F1 races in the entire world, with only one or two races per country, thats why they call it a world championship... I am not insulting american racing, i was just saying that none of the series are world championships

  • I love the comment when he kicks the waterbarrel, "Aw, he's a happy puppy..."

  • A racing series that runs ovals can never take on Formula 1... Think about it, you can't run ovals wen it's wet because of the dangers. If they kicked out all the oval tracks, THEN they might be able to compete. But running tracks where the weather decides if you race or not, thats just not good enough... Formula 1 has of course cut the Malaysian grand prix short this year because of rain, but that was because the drivers couldn't see where the road was!

  • @skynet091287 You don't know shit about motorsports, do you? Think about it a minute: let's say there's a car, be it F1 or CART, that may safely run on an oval with rain (and there isn't). There would have to be a pit stop every 20 laps or so, IF the tires last that long, which I doubt (wet tires over 230mph? HA). Hell, teams would have to spend "USD 1 million" just in wet tires, only to finish a race, that'd be complete nonsense!

  • @ATDOINFERNO If you actually READ my comment, you would find that it wasn't the series, cars or anything like that i was unhappy about. It was just the fact that if it rains during a raceweekend in CART on an oval, people who have payed to see a race will get really dissapointed that the race is canceled. And yes, i know A LOT about motorsports, im a mechanic myself, and i spend a lot of my time following the motorsports they actually air in Denmark: F1, GP2, Rallycross, DTC, Formula Renault...

  • @skynet091287 OK, it's not the series or cars. Now it's the crowd, which has paid to see a race...I'd want my money back if I were in Bahrain this year, watching that...car exhibition, because, honestly, there was nothing I could dare calling "race" at all there. Like I wrote before..."good'ol days..."

  • @ATDOINFERNO Don't get me wrong, i find F1 pretty boring sometimes too! I mean, just look at the 2000-2004 seasons. at that time it wasn't a question of who came first (Michael Schumacher), but who would take second place! From 2002-2005 i only watched the first 5 races, just to confirm "Oh... Schumacher again...!" That said, they do try their best to make the races fun, but in the top formula of racing, there is only so much that can be done...

  • look at these cars, simply beautiful ! CART and old PPG IndyCar World Series had the most beautiful open wheel cars ever made.

  • I miss these days when the engines would be pushed to the limit where we would see real horse power and Real speeds. Where the drivers dont just mash the throttle with engines that are tuned down.

  • who win the race???

  • Christian Fittipaldi won it, I believe.

  • All the engines lost because they decided to use the hanford device, creating more load on the entire drivetrain, and the aerodynamic instability of the hanford device and tunnel blockers created some of the most dangerous and not even as close racing.

If they wanted to keep the speeds down they should have mandated the road course wings on superspeedways without the winglets at least you wouldn't have seen such boring racing.

  • And to believe...This was OUR series. A series that DOMINATED North and South America and threatened to take on the European circuits to challenge Formula One for supremacy! Had there been no split and things continued looking up, we'd probably have drivers like Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa, and such racing over HERE! Not to mention manufacturers would join in on the fun.

Open Wheel Racing: The first, original, and REAL AMERICAN RACING SERIES!!

  • @PandaTrueno2 how is that pandatrueno you jdm noob

CART drivers wouldn't even beat F3 drivers

  • @PandaTrueno2 You see this is part of the reason, why so many people hate americans and their extreme patriotism..

  • @PandaTrueno2 1 year ago, I'd say Lewis Hamilton would not be able to complete a single lap on an oval. Massa? Maybe. But they'd take at least a full 3 years to - who knows - match the likes of Franchitti, Dixon, Briscoe and Castroneves. I, for once, don't follow F1 anymore. F1 sucks; single-file exhibition is NOT racing, nor motorsports. Good'ol days...

  • @ATDOINFERNO Well... It goes both ways, i agree that Hamilton would probably suck on an oval, on the other hand, Castroneves might be a terrible F1 driver! CART and F1 has their own unique challenges, and it's a matter of opinion which one you like most. The worst thing about F1, is how predictable it can be, just take this years season. Red Bull Racing had a far superior car, and it's only technical difficulties that has kept them from clinching both the constructors and drivers title already!

  • @ATDOINFERNO

if you dont follow F1 anymore why you take this as an argument?

And what evidence do you have to say that Massa would be better then Hamilton in a oval?

Massa is just a average driver........

  • @DonOctavioFlores Read my comment again. I wrote "1 year ago, I'd say(...)", not "now". Lewis was definately improving, as far as I can tell. But he was still taking some risks no driver can take on an oval. Massa, on the other hand, knows(?last year...) how to be conservative, when needed; while keeping his pace, when possible. BTW, fortunately, Alonso didn't win this season...now, as a friend of mine analyzed: "team Ferrari wouldn't stand a chance in this season, under normal conditions".

  • @ATDOINFERNO

    You are underestimating Hamilton.

How many foreneigners (= not used to ovals) won in Indy/ChampCar in the last 30 years?

And how many of them were in the same level as Hamilton (F1 champs)?

Massa is "conservative" simple because he´s off the pace. And btw he always had an "agressive" reputation.

  • @DonOctavioFlores "How many foreneigners (= not used to ovals) won in Indy/ChampCar in the last 30 years?" As far as I can tell, 3: Nigel Mansell, Emerson Fittipaldi and Mario Andretti. BTW, Andretti started racing professionaly in America...does he count? I guess not. "And how many of them were in the same level as Hamilton (F1 champs)?" Perhaps Mario and Nigel. Emerson is 2x F1 champion, so he's a level above Hamilton, I guess?

  • noice

  • Agunate Fontana!!! Aguante Ford!!!

  • I miss the good old days of Champ Car, well, when it was called CART!! =(

  • couldnt agree more!!!!!

  • paul page is just awesome at commentary!!!!!

  • he should do indycar these days

  • @crazyful123 I agree, the VS cast is horrible, ABC is even worse

  • @HollywoodSheen agreed, but the vs. cast does have comradery, yes i know i spelled that wrong :P but still

  • Ils aiment bien tourner en rond les ricains. Et ils appelent sa une course? Aucun interet...

  • Were there two races at Fontana in 2000? I was at a CART race in the Fall of 2000 at Fontana but I don't remember all that engine carnage.

  • There was just one CART race in Fontana in 2000. I remember watching the race on TV.

  • There was just one race. It started on Sunday but it rained and they stopped it and picked it up again on Monday. I know because I was too sick to go into work (cough, cough) but somehow mustered up enough strength to get out to the speedway.

  • Champcar fuckin ruled then. They had everyone, all kinds of different engines, chassis, teams...It was awesome!!! Now it ALL sucks...

  • @iceman83458345 agree. We can start by the cars. These 1998 CART'S were a masterpiece of beauty and performance.

Then you take a loot at These current (2003) Dallaras. F***ing ugly thing. And the 2012 's are even worse. I hated the all the aerokit. They managed to mix all the ugliness of the 2003 dallara, with the ugly current F1 wings. They looked to the project and said "not ugly enough". so they putted a bumper on the back. (Yes, I know what's the tech explain for the bumper. Still Ugly)

  • uhm... no u dumbass its not. Nascar would do 190 and those cars were going 240... o yeah thats the same

  • Lol, Chip Gannasi kickin' off the barrels.

  • One of the details i liked best was the character generator ESPN had between 1999 and 2001 just like this one who ilustrates the standings, hehe

  • 2000 champcar was going down hill. Now champcar

go up the hill slow if champcar and indycar get back to oldrules it be better then F1cars.

  • They recently did. Check the indycar page. Actually the CART went on downhill just when ESPN decided not to broadcast champcar any longer in 2001. And it kept going that way when Ford remained as the only engine provider for the teams, so they became Champ Car at the end of 2002 when Barry Green, Chip Ganassi and others leaved CART to join IndyCar. Toyota and Honda went together with them.

  • I made a grammar mistake i can't afford, i meant: "so they became Champcar at the end of 2002 when Barry Green, Chip Gannassi and others LEFT cart to join IndyCar.

  • yep, and tht as the end of CART

  • there were some blown engines missing. Helio Castroneves ended up the same way, as well as Alex Tagliani who was doing its best race since Rio de Janeiro, and that was just that accident who gave Christian Fitipaldi the victory and the million dollars price since the track was on caution as well as finished under yellow flag with only 7 cars remaining...

  • Engines oil was not good back then.

  • Champcar number one openwheel racing.

  • fuk man this was the tight years what did u expect the engines were pumping close to 1000 hp lol

  • Do you have Paul Tracy engine blow up from that race?

  • those guys should had gone with The Cosworth

Engine..the same engine still runs today in the ccws, just detuned to run 3 times longer than viewed in the video @ 12,500 rpm.

I miss the good ol days when the race engines only lasted 500 miles and 200 miles with the qualifing engines...memories

  • Proper open wheel over racing.

  • good video champcar4ever

  • i remember watching this race... one more failure, tags runnign well with 2 laps to go, engine goes and whack into the wall

  • :O amazing.

  • Only 5 Cars finished that race. About 5 cars out from an Accident, and about 14 with Engine or other Mechanical Problems.

  • I was at that race, Sunday was rained out and they raced on Monday, I think that might of had something to do with it.
