His voice is so fucking good. Even today, he can still hit all the notes. I saw him last year (or year before last) and he sounded phenom. Ozzy rocks.
This was recorded on June 12, 1982 at Irvine Meadows in Orange County, CA. I know because I was there and I still have the ticket stub. Purchased the ticket to see Randy, who died March 19, 1982. This show was only 15 weeks after his death and I can tell you there was a 'weird' vibe in the audience and on stage.
I worked with Brad on a photo shoot years back, he's a nice guy. I told him I thought he did a great job filling in for Randy, he was a bit shocked, I guess he took a lot of crap from Randy's fans. Anyway, he really appreciated it. He did do a fine job, Randy's a tough cat to follow.
@krakahead TO THIS DAY, I'm, STILL, FLOORED by Brad's playing in this concert! In my opinion, even though Bark At The Moon DID have its moments, this 1982 concert is Ozzy at his BEST! Knowing the "dues" Brad had to "pay to play in Ozzy's band?" WOW! I "salute" Brad for "toughing it out!"
@Vanrocco66 Well I agree Brad can play like a madman, but considering that Randy wrote these amazing parts and Brad just played them I can't agree that Brad is better... When I hear Brad write music this amazing I'll reconsider that opinion.
@krakahead Cool that you told him that. I agree - no one can replace Randy, but shitting on Brad is just ridiculous - a great player for sure. Awesome tone.....
@SkyNett I have had the pleasure of following Ozzy, through the early 70,s,till now! An old man for sure! Are you fucking argueing guitar? Tony,Randy or Brad, get the fuck over yourself you fucktards<it is rock and roll!
Bernie Torme stepped in right after the Tragic accident killing Randy Rhoads. It was hard for Bernie to handle the pressure of fans yelling at him, (From my understanding), And I believe he had his own band, Electric Gypsies, to contend with as well, so he stepped down & Brad Gillis came in.. Brad did a Fine job too!! Ironically, Bernies' Birthday in March 18. One days' difference to that illfated evening Taking RR from us all.....Bernie toured with Ozzys' band for only 3 weeks then left....
I got lucky and saw this tour back in 82 at the Oakland Colosseum Arena it was incredible for a 15 year kid. The first 3 songs they played the crowd was so loud you could not hear them playing. It sounded like a roar and this hit of music. Either the crowd got quieter or they turned up the volume. It was the second concert I got to see thanks to my Mom, cause I found out after the show had my dad got his way I would not have been able to go. RIP Mom you ROCK,
@ONLINEMARTY I too had the privilege of seeing Randy live in 1982 (in Louisville). It was the most incredible display of guitar virtuosity I have ever witnessed in my life. Brad is a fine player and I enjoy his playing as well, but there was only one Randy and he was unique. RIP.
There was an irish guy who finished off the tour randy was on before brad,Read it in an interview in guitar world ,The guy said it was horrible he had to use Randy gear and thing were turning on and off when they were ment to ,The crew were crying all the time think sharron offer him $200 a week to stay but he left and brad stepped in
Brad Gillis is SO UNDERRATED! Great Player! Love his playing on Speak Of The Devil. I think that if there were some of Ozzy's solo tunes on that album that Brad would've gotten more notice for his playing with Ozzy.
Brad got put into a very hard situation with fans disliking him because Randy was gone, Ozzy clearly effected by his good friends loss and trying to just function,Rudy who was Randys close friend having to look over and not see his bud,Don Airy and Tommy Aldridge who witnessed Randys death all trying to keep it together... Brad stuck to his guns and delivered in a very good way.. this is why even though his playing might not be the best..you have to respect him for his balls for stepping in..
am i the only one who thought that performance was absolutely fucking terrible without randy? ozzy wasn't happy, he just looked like he was struggling not to have a meltdown on stage, and the bassist and brad look like some fucking retarted malfunctioning robots just swinging back and forth. not to mention the lip syncing
2:32 I love the old Ozzy frog jump. It cracks me up. Also check out the look on his face at 3:03. It's like, "you bastard, your butchering this solo". Although it's not that bad. I like Brad.

Brad Gillis is perhaps one of the most overlooked, underrated & Greatest guitar players of all time. I agree with Mirtaserfaty. Gillis did a spectacular job on this tour!

too bad ol' zakk never got to play this song (i mean, i think it would be cool to hear his take on it, not that he could play it better than randy, mind you)
Brad was NOT Randy's immediate replacement. Bernie Torme was brought in on short notice to fill in for Randy though didn't work out mostly because of his lack of familiarity with the material. Brad was also brought in on short notice and auditioned for the gig - he played the solo to FHA in a hotel room for Ozzy and Sharon without amplification and got the gig. his work with cover band Alameda All Stars had prepared him in part for the gig. Brad had committments to Night Ranger
brad gillis took alot of flak but he shouldnt have!!! he did a great job! he's better than zakk is,not that i dont like zakk i do it's just i feel brad is a better guitar player!!
I'm not even a big Brad Gillis fan, but any reasonably intelligent person seeing this can't dispute that he did a great job, especially given the limited timeframe he had to learn the RR solos. He's a talented guitarist, but people love to hate him because he had to walk in RR's shadows. I'll admit he's known to overuse the whammy bar, but that aside, he's a good guitarist.
Awesome...1:15 you can see Ozzy's mouth moving to the incorrect lyric: "fever of a breakout", while he sings the proper lyric in the overdub. That flub was present almost everytime this tune was performed live. He must've had brainlock with that lyric. Years before the teleprompter.
I think Ozzy has always had a knack for finding talented Guitarist's including Gillis. If I remember correctly Brad would play with NightRanger opening for Ozzy and then pull another set with the Ozzman. that is 1 long shredding night. I appreciated hearing Brad's version of Rhoads playing. Any fill-in guitarist puts their spin on the music. Keep on Rockin Gillis on tour with NightRanger!
Brad Gills has a different style than Zakk, but I believe Zakk's stance and style makes him on of the ultimate Rock-n-roll guitarists of all time, and I think it would be fitting to showcase all of them at The Hard Rock Cafe or something
Damn man! I totally have respect for Brad Gillis. He plays so killer. I always recognized him for the lighter songs of Night Ranger but now I'll totally think of him as the Metal Maniac that played the hell out of those songs. Evil looking stage & vibe here. I hated when Ozzy adopted that Glam look. Probably got pushed into it by that bitch Sharon, fucking cunt.
How much of the vocals did Ozzy re-do? I swear, I have always marveled how good Ozzy's vocals sounded on this recording. Don't tell me the vocals were ALL re-done. LOL
Is it just me or is Gillis playing the intro a bit different from Randy's version? I picked it out while watching the Night Ranger interview/lesson on GuitarWorld, too. He adds an extra note or something. Weird.
Gillis is definitely a solid player, though. And that couldn't have been easy learning all of those songs and stepping in with almost no notice.
@Hydrophish I agree! In fact, In or During an interview, Brad said, "The fans were so traumatized by Randy's death, that a lot of them gave me 'the (middle) finger' when I was playing the songs." In my opinion, talk about "paying one's dues in 'showbiz' !"
Gillis was amazing on this tour. When I saw it, I thought the guitars had been pre-recorded, that's how tight Gillis was. In fact, when you listen to Rhodes bootlegs, he wasn't nearly as clean as the LPs. Plus Gillis rarely looked at his fretboard and never stopped moving. Unreal.
Bread GIllis had about a month to learn all the songs for this tour. He did it, nailed it, and went back Night Ranger. The guy is an awesome player, and hooked Ozzy up big time that year.
Friendlock prevents fat ass YT trolls, like yourself, from leaving me pointless emails. Speaking of troll...nice avatar dude!! When did you escape from the fucking zoo? Haha You look like the costume design for the Planet of the Apes movies.
