I find it very disturbing that current/upcoming TV shows such as "The Playboy Club" and "Mad Men" depict smoking (particularly indoor smoking) with unapologetic shamelessness. There is a movement in Hollywood to ban all depictions of smoking from films because of the known health risks... Why doesn't television evolve similarly?
Smoking is one of the rudest things you could be doing in public, why should I have to breath in carcinogens and put myself at risk when selfish people need to breathe in their death on a stick? My wife has asthma because her parents smoked (and no history of asthma in the family before that). I have known others with asthma who had parents who smoked. They all were sick a lot as kids. A kid died of SIDS right before we did this project and the parent was a smoker. Seems like there is a lot of evidence but big tobacco doesn't want the research done.

No credible study ever conducted has ever come to the conclusion that SHS poses anything more than an insignificant risk. The truth has to out eventually.
Air quality studies have also shown that the air in a well ventilated bar that allows smoking is actually cleaner than the air outside. A pub that has a grill or fryer also has higher levels of carcinogens.

I hear that kind of thing all the time. That's like saying 'lets ban casinos because some people want to quit gambling' and in the process, punishing people that like to gamble, or, ban chocolate because some people are fat. It's a silly notion really!
Speaking of fat, what do you think of a fat tax? They tax cigarettes (it's high isn't it?)... a sin tax of sorts but fatty foods kills more people than anything else. A penny tax on each gram of fat could fund our whole health care system I bet.
The problem is that there is no such thing as 'bad food' really, without fat, you would die. It's just that some people cannot control themselves when it comes to eating, and simply eat too much it. So my answer would be no. This demontrates a common theme to me. People tend to blame the things they choose to over indulge in; cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, gambling, food, ect., whatever it may be, instead of looking at themselves.

It's illegal now in New Mexico to smoke in restaurants. It's wonderful. There's a good restaurant here that used to be so smoky we wouldn't go much. But now it's wonderful. We go more often again and can take the kids.

'RELATIVE' being the VERY key word here and indeed for all things in life. Here in the UK the drug ecstasy/MDMA is totally demonised by the government and the media, yet considering it's use is very widespread and there are very few deaths as a direct result of usage I believe to be a 'relativey' safe not to mention very pleasant, and with none of the violence associated with the totally legal drug alcohol. What I don't understand is how it is banned in bars but NOT casinos. What's that all about? And some casinos are aimed at families. There is a great one here that has child care and a kids arcade that my kids like. My wife and I love the buffets and shows. But they allow smoking. Kids don't go to bars but they do go to some casinos because of family offerings. What's up with that?
3. Do i believe people should smoke around children? Absolutely not! A child body is still developing and is not as capable in dealing with everyday irritant/toxins. Smoke, dust and the likes I believe should be avoided.
2. Should adults be exposed? I don't believe it will ham them, but I do understand it certainly can be an annoyance. So, no smoking in Restaurants, Shops, Buses, Trains, even crowded outdoor areas, fine, you won't here an argument from me. The one place that I do....

Look, I just want to clear a few thing up here and let you know my view on smoking/ETS.
1. Can smoking be harmful? of course it can. The dose response relationship in many studies proves a causal link. i.e. people who smoke 50 cigs a day have more illness than 10 a day smokers.
2. Is ETS harmful? Well the lack of hard evidence here clear. )f the 63 studies looking at the non smoking partners of smokers, 9 show a positive relationship, 2 show a negative, and 53 show no relationship.
The entire subject of secondhand smoke resides in an area of discourse heavily laced with activists, who, passionate about their mission of improving public health, far too readily exaggerate the dangers.
You can do it all you want but don't fool other people in to thinking it is okay. Smoking makes people sick and shortens your life. I've seen it happen too many times and it's a bad way to die.
To advocate why I'm holding this position for the moment (until clear evidence is shown) is because there was no actual experiment done to prove that smoking is as risky as some claim it is (and there might not be because of moral issues). We once thought the Sun moved around the Earth. We now think smoking causes long cancer. A man died after a vaccine. We blame the vaccine. We find out the man died from a car accident and yet we still find a way to blame the vaccine. Smoking MAY be the same.
It's not. There is proof and i've seen smokers get very sick and die. And their kids are not healthy. The husband of a smoking friend (she just died) he has lung cancer now. And her death was not pretty.
I'm talking about ETS, not active smoking. Plus, smoking in low amounts (less than 5 per day) actually carries little risk according to the largest study conducted on 'light smoking'.
They died from their habit? of course you can prove this? hmm...I think not! Just because they smoked does not mean it was the cause. Non smokers die of the the exact same illnesses all the time. There is no illness exclusive to smokers.
That doesn't mean smoking made her ill. There's a difference between making you ill or weakening your body. You can't eat a lot of things while you have some sort of illnes. Does that mean that the product you cannot now consume made you ill? Of course not.
I'm not defending smoking. I am a smoker but it is irrelevant. I'm not saying smoking isn't bad for you, it might as well be. I'm saying that it's not as bad as some people would like to make you think it is. "The dose makes the poison". I'm a smoker for five years, my grandparents were smoker for almost 70 and they never had any breathing trouble. I repeat myself, I'm not saying smoking isn't bad for you, I'm just saying it might not be as harmful as some may think.
Big tobacco wouldn't lost lawsuits if it wasn't bad. Bans would not be successful if there wasn't proof. I've seen the consequences of smoking on loved one's health. Smoking won't kill you fast but it is a horrible death when it does.
I don't care that its bad for me but I do care because the people who are blowing smoke in everyone's faces on the street are straight-up dicks. Seriously, it's annoying as hell.
Please don't think that I feel it's ok to smoke around kids because I don't, BUT, the World Health Organization's very own study showed that children of smoking parents had less disease, suggesting a protective effect.
I can feel the hate of the health nazi's swelling inside them as I type.
fact is, most of the studies of SHS dangers, including two of the largest three, show no statistical positive association. fact. Actually look at the studies yourself, not the headlines & think!
The National Cancer Institute says... "Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), ear infections, colds, pneumonia, bronchitis, and more severe asthma. Being exposed to secondhand smoke slows the growth of childrens lungs and can cause them to cough, wheeze, and feel breathless." I'd be happy to find more studies that support this.
You haven't actually given the name of the study from which they derived that statement. What Study? What is the name? Point me towards the link!
Just to add, the rates of asthma in children is actually growing, yet smoking rates have been falling since the 70's in the UK.
I would like to repeat from my previous post that i DO NOT condone smoking in the presence of children, but do believe that smoking parents are no danger to their kids. And please, don't come at me with 3rd hand smoke!

I find it very disturbing that current/upcoming TV shows such as "The Playboy Club" and "Mad Men" depict smoking (particularly indoor smoking) with unapologetic shamelessness. There is a movement in Hollywood to ban all depictions of smoking from films because of the known health risks... Why doesn't television evolve similarly?

My wife has asthma because her parents smoked (and no history of asthma in the family before that). I have known others with asthma who had parents who smoked. They all were sick a lot as kids. A kid died of SIDS right before we did this project and the parent was a smoker. Seems like there is a lot of evidence but big tobacco doesn't want the research done.

I've just cleaned my bathroom and i'm sure the chemicals i used are far worse for my health than any burnt organic material.
No credible study ever conducted has ever come to the conclusion that SHS poses anything more than an insignificant risk. The truth has to out eventually.
Air quality studies have also shown that the air in a well ventilated bar that allows smoking is actually cleaner than the air outside. A pub that has a grill or fryer also has higher levels of carcinogens.

We have a bylaw that states "No smoking within 6 meters of any doors, windows or air intakes" and I haven't seen it enforced, even once! People are still smoking in doorways and the store managers are too ignorant and chickenshit to tell them to butt out!

The only person i am affecting is myself. Second hand smoke has no scientific viability. No study has ever found any evidence to support it.
Green house gas my backside. We've just had the worst winter in 30 years. I'm pretty certain North America has just had the worst winter in decades as well.

Speaking of fat, what do you think of a fat tax? They tax cigarettes (it's high isn't it?)... a sin tax of sorts but fatty foods kills more people than anything else. A penny tax on each gram of fat could fund our whole health care system I bet.

The problem is that there is no such thing as 'bad food' really, without fat, you would die. It's just that some people cannot control themselves when it comes to eating, and simply eat too much it. So my answer would be no. This demontrates a common theme to me. People tend to blame the things they choose to over indulge in; cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, gambling, food, ect., whatever it may be, instead of looking at themselves.

It's illegal now in New Mexico to smoke in restaurants. It's wonderful. There's a good restaurant here that used to be so smoky we wouldn't go much. But now it's wonderful. We go more often again and can take the kids.

'RELATIVE' being the VERY key word here and indeed for all things in life. Here in the UK the drug ecstasy/MDMA is totally demonised by the government and the media, yet considering it's use is very widespread and there are very few deaths as a direct result of usage I believe to be a 'relativey' safe not to mention very pleasant, and with none of the violence associated with the totally legal drug alcohol. One is illegal, the other is not...absurd!

....object to not being able to smoke in is Pubs/Bars/Clubs. Surely there can be compromise here. We could either have, a) bars for smokers and bars for non-smokers. b) smoking areas inside bars. I cant see a problem with this. Also, lets not forget, these places are hardly health clubs, they sell intoxicants for Gods sake! The people that frequent these places probably don't value their health as much as the non drinking population, hence the higher smoking incidence amongst drinkers!

What I don't understand is how it is banned in bars but NOT casinos. What's that all about? And some casinos are aimed at families. There is a great one here that has child care and a kids arcade that my kids like. My wife and I love the buffets and shows. But they allow smoking. Kids don't go to bars but they do go to some casinos because of family offerings. What's up with that?

3. Do i believe people should smoke around children? Absolutely not! A child body is still developing and is not as capable in dealing with everyday irritant/toxins. Smoke, dust and the likes I believe should be avoided.

Look, I just want to clear a few thing up here and let you know my view on smoking/ETS.
1. Can smoking be harmful? of course it can. The dose response relationship in many studies proves a causal link. i.e. people who smoke 50 cigs a day have more illness than 10 a day smokers.
2. Is ETS harmful? Well the lack of hard evidence here clear. )f the 63 studies looking at the non smoking partners of smokers, 9 show a positive relationship, 2 show a negative, and 53 show no relationship.

To advocate why I'm holding this position for the moment (until clear evidence is shown) is because there was no actual experiment done to prove that smoking is as risky as some claim it is (and there might not be because of moral issues). We once thought the Sun moved around the Earth. We now think smoking causes long cancer. A man died after a vaccine. We blame the vaccine. We find out the man died from a car accident and yet we still find a way to blame the vaccine. Smoking MAY be the same.

I'm talking about ETS, not active smoking. Plus, smoking in low amounts (less than 5 per day) actually carries little risk according to the largest study conducted on 'light smoking'.
They died from their habit? of course you can prove this? hmm...I think not! Just because they smoked does not mean it was the cause. Non smokers die of the the exact same illnesses all the time. There is no illness exclusive to smokers.

That doesn't mean smoking made her ill. There's a difference between making you ill or weakening your body. You can't eat a lot of things while you have some sort of illnes. Does that mean that the product you cannot now consume made you ill? Of course not.

I'm not defending smoking. I am a smoker but it is irrelevant. I'm not saying smoking isn't bad for you, it might as well be. I'm saying that it's not as bad as some people would like to make you think it is. "The dose makes the poison". I'm a smoker for five years, my grandparents were smoker for almost 70 and they never had any breathing trouble. I repeat myself, I'm not saying smoking isn't bad for you, I'm just saying it might not be as harmful as some may think.

Big tobacco wouldn't lost lawsuits if it wasn't bad. Bans would not be successful if there wasn't proof. I've seen the consequences of smoking on loved one's health. Smoking won't kill you fast but it is a horrible death when it does.

Please don't think that I feel it's ok to smoke around kids because I don't, BUT, the World Health Organization's very own study showed that children of smoking parents had less disease, suggesting a protective effect.

The National Cancer Institute says... "Children exposed to secondhand smoke are at an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), ear infections, colds, pneumonia, bronchitis, and more severe asthma. Being exposed to secondhand smoke slows the growth of childrens lungs and can cause them to cough, wheeze, and feel breathless." I'd be happy to find more studies that support this.

Just to add, the rates of asthma in children is actually growing, yet smoking rates have been falling since the 70's in the UK.
I would like to repeat from my previous post that i DO NOT condone smoking in the presence of children, but do believe that smoking parents are no danger to their kids. And please, don't come at me with 3rd hand smoke!
