thats not wasting money. This Tunnel will also be a part of the european highspeed railway network. Aktaually there is a quarrel to make or not make a railway station( Sedrun) directly under the alps. To get quick access to the station you would need to use a highspeed elevator. A big change for tourism in this area.

they shuold spend that money on new roads and road tunnels...

Maybe so,but not everythings about money,sometimes it is actually passion,this is a huge feet for man in engineering and it should'nt cost a penny really but unfortunatley it does,just like concorde and so many other ideas out there that could push us along as a race,but then it all comes back to money,the bane of the world.
