congress spent most of the cost over runs were all congress fault. the space station was erdone 3 times before they built it. the cost each time was around 3 billion a peace.
@abadubie Well actually this discussion is about the failure of constelation. Considering it was a motion that was pushed forward by a person that was incompetent by any measure of the concept it's fair game.
Seriously dude if your boss promised you a vacation all expense paid, yet only gave 1/30th the money needed would you take him seriously? If you say yes come work for me :)
@abadubie lol nothing wrong with getting back on the saddle, but next time please make sure you can afford the horse.
Bush promised a lunar mission with 30 billion I.O.U's. But who knows just because the guy was bad at math maybe he at other skills like geography, or english.
@Djee4Prez Not sure what you mean. If you're talking about the extra epic content we're adding, then it is simply additional content we're producing to help pay the bills. We can certainly stop the epic content, but if we do that we'll have to stop producing the show completely.
If you mean talking about how much it costs to launch vehicles, well, but like we have to pay to produce content, money drives the aerospace sector too. It is all relevant info to getting humans to the stars.
@rampike74 SSTO (or single stage to orbit) has failed thus far, but technology is getting more awesome every day. I think we're 10 years away from an SSTO prototype, which could completely change how we get to space. Gut feeling on that, no actual data.
By the time they figure out how to actually put it into space the chinese will be moon walking and the US will be so far underwater it wont even remember what a space program is.
------------
Also if you want a reason as to why you don't want competing space programS, just look at the Soviet moon shot. You had two competing companies splitting the state's resources and nothing ended up getting done.
Pick a path and walk it through. It is the only way to space.
@abadubie Problem is that Constellation was a mistake from the beginning. It *had* to be cut because it couldn't have been sustained. If we had continued down that path we would have had another Apollo on our hands: a program that was killed because we couldn't afford it.
Right now NASA is pushing the commercial transport pretty hard and getting great results. SpaceX is able to do some amazing things that no one else is doing right now. This is a huge success for NASA and the American people!

Does anybody remember X-33? 1.3 bilion and they didn't even build a full scale mock-up. But SSTO is a failed idea anyway....

@abadubie
The facts remain that NASA has not launched a new rocket/spacecraft into orbit under constellation.
SpaceX launched a rocket into orbit twice and a spacecraft once and and at a far cheaper price
also
"not at the expense of NASA"
Don't you understand NASA NEEDS the private industry or it can't maintain the space station.
if we cut COT/CCDEV funding NASA will be screwed.

nooo, in order to cancel a program, you just have to know that it is adead end and a waste of resources

and how many people has canstellation launched?
U5K0 9 months ago
I have to enter a formal statement of protest regarding the 12M designation as per Neil deGrasse Tyson's take on the #13-phobia.
On the single rocket issue... someone should start calling it socialism.
Cancelling NASA is unrealistic which makes the suggestion a complete waste of time.
