  • Lol at the comment bellow and also

man ,in its nature, is a violent thing in nature BY nature.

I dought that we will EVER gather ourselves and finnaly work as one.

After all thats how nature made us.

    Its in our nature.

  • I hope Koko had a baby.

  • @manelystanley91 trophy hunting was invented by settlers back in the 1800 because they didn't like the buffalo ruining crops and stuff, but I agree, it's completely ridiculous and heart breaking to have such a sport.

  • This was an incredible documentary, to think this was created before I was even born but views are still the same.. it's a shame really.. people are really no different than this gorilla, think about the thousands of stories you hear of people going "primeval" when lost in the wild, even going to length of eating another human.. we are all animals, all part of nature, and it should be a crime to kill anything that we would not eat, trophy hunting is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard...

  • If the first human on Earth didn't observe the actions of animals, we would never have survived. So before you say that they aren't important, think twice.

  • I ask the people who oppose this research to tell us all why.

If we never learned anything from animal's, how are we to co-exist with them?.

Our need for material and resource's push these animal's and many others to the point of

    extension.

If you've ever owned a pet, you've done the same.

You've taken a kin's freedom for the value of a guardian, or a friend.

We are the protector's of this world and everything that inhabits it.

Some will always disagree but they will learn it is for the best.

  • all animals are individuals .. even my dog ... well i say my dog i mean my best friend who happens to be a dog :)

  • it is nice to see animals in their natural habitat(or as close as possible to one)... RESPECT gorilla's right to be a gorilla ... not an experiment in captivity ... sad stuff ...

  • I've learned and reinforced several meanings in life just by watching this video. The intentions by which we identify ourselves and against is associated to the standards we present upon others. If this ape was to have never been raised in captivity, we wouldn't of understood that there are remarkably similar traits we share with primates but tend to strongly identify against because of state of being or not being the similar in how we behave, act and respond. This is has been same to racism.

  • Apple.. Apple.. Apple.. HURRY.. Apple

  • Apple.

  • Good and bad is natural, it has nothing to do with intelligence.

  • "A gorrila doesn't know the difference between good or bad and neither do we unless we're taught by our parents"

    He just contradicted himself.

  • koko should get the new iphone

  • They should be considered persons. I actually think there needs to be a new word instead of "persons", that isnt used synonymously with "human" so that people arent encouraged to discriminate against them. And it should be murder to kill them. This might stop poaching.

  • An important thing to consider is that we don't even know if Koko was a particularly smart ape. She could have been incredibly stupid as ape standards go. We might find later on as we train more Gorillas and do more research that she only showed a small part of what a gorilla can do.

  • 0:09 "Mono do you want to fuck now..." That's what I heard...

  • I truly wonder if she is introduced back to a group will she teach them sign language

  • what a cool car, wow

  • what a nice car wow

  • Ceasar... is...

    APPLE APPLE APPLE HURRY APPLE

  • we are not created from a 'rib' but from Nature's living energy and matter

  • we are not separate from Nature - Nature IS OUR TRUE CREATOR - we are Nature's creation.

there is no god but Nature

  • @sehryn

    fuck you, liar

  • @brief555 you're so articulate...NOT!!! poor thing! I feel sorry for you, not only are you deluded but you also haven't uttered anything even slightly intelligent!

  • @sehryn

    I know I haven't you idiot -_-

    I only said 3 words.

PS: I did not fucked your mom in her hot pussy and ass...NOT!!! gay thing! I feel sory for you, not only because you are gay but your father makes me sad for having an Idiotic child like you.

  • @brief555 urrrgh!!! Can't believe I inhabit the same planet as creepy nasty horrid unintelligent foul people like you!

  • imo its an important point that NOT ALL gorillas are put to research like Koko - such research is very special & is helping us understand much, including primates & their needs, primate development, language acquisition etc in ways we could not without Koko's help. so while I dont condone all gorillas being subject to projects Koko's participating in, I feel the project is important & Koko can still have quality life despite being removed from a semi-natural (ie zoo kept) gorilla clan.

  • Poor koko

  • I found this film awesome!

  • i don't think the zoo keeper understand, but i don't think he means to be bad either of course he just follows his own opinion of what he have been taught.

all animals deserve all rights we would expect all humans to have. :)

  • @Devoti I agree, he didn't seem to be bad by nature, he just had a different opinion. I think he just saw it as unnatural and automatically deduced that unnatural must mean wrong, that it must be bad for Koko. He probably meant no harm, not intentionally anyway. Although he might be subconsciously trying to justify his own profession. After all, if he was forced to see animals as equals to humans, how could he stay a zookeeper with clear conscience?

  • @Tuuliska yes, i think so too. :)

  • I find it cruel how she makes Koko work so hard for every little bite of food.

  • @Jessibuh but its ok to make people do the same thing?

  • hats off to this woman..

  • that zookeeper is such a 1970s douchbag.

  • It's pretty obvious that they don't feed her nearly enough. All these signs are for food, she's just barely 'talking'

  • @chickenpiggies animals have a tendency to overeat though so thats why they only think of food

  • I''m sure Penny knows what she's doing, but I find it weird how they feed Koko meat sometimes.

  • its so interesting and i hope I'll live to see that animals will finally have rights

  • Is that Penny's boyfriend? 1:15

  • Any one notice how the view counter decreases, each video?

  • Thank you very much for posting this. It's refreshing to watch a documentary that, although the drama exists, doesn't try to push it. We're all much smarter for it.

  • Beautiful documentary, we should definitely reconsider our views of a person.

  • apple apple food apple apple all..omg that computer is awesome!

  • IMO. The killing of any animal should be a HELL of a lot worse than what we give it today. I wouldn't call it murder, but you shouldn't just get a fine for torturing and killing an animal.

  • Listen to what Obi-Wan says.

  • dat guy at the ape reserve is not so articulate, but i like what he's saying

  • it would be coool if someone taught a gorilla to play video games. I wonder if they'd like it

  • @moochabod o.o gorilla probably get competitive and get mad. :l generally it would happen to all of us

  • @moochabod I think the further they can go is pacman! :P

  • for me every animal is an individual, it has its own charachter just like humans. the funny thing is some people see animals as objects with almost no feelings but when they see an intelligence experiment like this they change their minds, they start to give more value to animals. gorilla's stand on the second place of most intelligent animals (1 humans, a human is also an animal) this was an interesting documentary.

  • @maachilosa wrong!! chimpansee's are mutch smarter and more evolved using stone tools to break nuts, and not only that, they also are above gorrilas in the tree of life, but gorrillaz are pretty smart 2

  • @Aerodynamic1991 Stone tools eh...Crows have been proven to use tools as much as primates, there is a whole documentary on it. Primates are not the only smart animals, all animals are intelligent, just in their own ways. Have you seen the seagull that always steals the same type of chip bag from a convenience store everyday at noon when no one is looking and the clerk is behind the desk. He flies off with it and rips it open to eat it. people have actually begun to pay for his chips.

  • @azbazmaz1 yea I know, every animal is intelligent in their own ways, and yea I saw 1nce a video of a bird stealing doritos from a store, birds are very intelligent indeed and that proofs that brainside doesent always makes 1 smarter then someone with a smaller brain, but then there's still stuff like emotions, feelings, caring thats involved and not all animals have all of them or even 1 of those 3,but yea all animals are smart in there own ways.btw bonobo's are almost as smart as chimps

  • @Aerodynamic1991 other way around bonobos have proven to be more intelgente then chimps in are style of thinking

  • @maachilosa its true. in all aspects that matter (e.g. joy, pain, love) all animals are equals.

  • I like the study of animals, but i believe they shouldnt be made to act like humans. Animals have their own habitats. Unfortunately because there are so many people we are destroying habitats and not thinking twice about it.

  • Whatever, you put an animal on a chain and call it a necklace, omg, what about every other ape, one ape and so many in zoo's. Can anyone say rise of the planet of the apes.... this was a perfect basis for a script...

  • 4:06 zoo guy starts talking out of his ass. embarrassing...

  • What if we let non wild apes live in our home and treat them just like our brothers and sisters. Let 300 years pass by and see what happens to them.

  • @sankoboy im sure theyd mostly accept society's restraints and the supression of natural things like freedom, just like most humans have done... but occasionally, youd find a few that would be smart enough to know that human societys dont win you rights or freedom, they take them away

  • Aw, that's too bad. I would have loved to see if Koko and Michael would have started teaching their baby. Thanks for the info!

  • Does anyone know if Koko and Michael were ever able to start a communicating gorilla family?

  • @jlennon510 michael died, so there was only those two who communicated with each other

  • Bearing in mind all the 8 videos add up to some 80 odd minutes so its only a small part of the 'research',what i've seen is a very well trained gorilla, penny seemed to be doing a great deal prompting and food as rewards which you can train pigeons to press buttons in the correct order for a food reward,if koko was truely intelligent why is everything padlocked up i imagine its because she'd just trash the place just like the ones at the zoo would do if put in that same room IMHO peace =)

  • This documentary was so depressing for some reason, buy it was really amazing.

  • You may be opposed to animal testing of any kind, but studies such as these helps us understand ourselves and nature.

  • Thanks to the uploader and the original producers and directors. This was great.

  • I love KoKo and Penny.

  • that douche from the zoo just wants to make money off koko.

  • that Francine Patterson is incredible :|

All the best to both of them.

  • In some cases kokos smarter then a special needs child...

  • This was very interesting. Thumbs up if Rise of the Apes (2011) brought you here!

  • Although i see the benefit of such a study, I can't help but feel very sad for Koko - she must be so lonely. I also think that penny thinks more of how her life would be without Koko instead of what she claims (how will Koko cope if she had to live with gorilla's again?) what she really means is how would i live without Koko?

  • These are the reason I despice cristianity which tells us we all all siners and deserve to go to hell if we humans keep thinking such astrocities we will probably end up killing all lifeforms on this planet

  • Caesar is Home!!

  • @ladiesman2oneseven Koko is home.

  • Great now i have to go look for Br4veDave and mentayflor's comments

  • amazing!

  • i keep imagining if koko had kids and taught em language i mean maybe one or 2 words.. that would bring a hole new scenario in a milenium

  • Also.. if humans weren't so smart we wouldn't have fucked the world over so badly.

  • @Hant420 why should we be stupid? and honestly there right you need to read more often we are trying to prevent what is happening there making huge artificial trees to reverse the effects that we've cause AND your being a little hypocritical You wouldn't even know we were hurting the plant If it wasn't for science

  • @Hant420 hey your taking a lot of stick on here which is not fair...ask your evolutionist friends to explain how elephants came into being have they got a complete elephant fossil record i doubt it...an elephant uses its trunk to feed, to drink ,to scratch its ass but it must have evolved from an animal without a trunk if evolution is correct, what good is a trunk half the length lets say it cant reach the ground or up into the trees so it has no evolutionary advantage ..peace =)

  • @debunker1

    fail.

  • @Hant420 You have it backwards. The world needs more smart people...

  • so basically your saying that this gorilla should have rights like humans... so you would never put a leash on your child (strike one), you would never hit your child (strike two), you would never purchase a child from someone (strike three), animal rights are very important but your PETA attitude is a little silly

  • @Hant420 people do put leashes on children. (strike 1) people do hit children.(strike 2) people do get kids from other people it's called adoption.(strike 3) I'm not super PETA i just wanted to clear up some facts, frankly primates are mistreated and need to be given rights, that being said i don't think it's wrong to eat meat, humans are omnivores, i just think it's wrong to treat intelligent animals like crap(animal testing.) what if they treated us like that sorry to come across like a jerk.

  • @ZombieChimpanzee If I told you that we could find a cure for cancer but it would take killing half of all the gorillas in the world, would you be fine with that? I sure as hell would.

  • @Hant420 #1 we do leash are kids! ive seen small children in harnesses before, there mostly done at zoos or other place where there are crowds im sorry but i'd like to keep my kid with me instead of let them get lost #2 We spank are kids or pop there hands If you were listening she said she has to assert her dominance because koko is much stronger than her #3 she bought koko because the zoo just wanted to put her in a cage away fom her friends and she would get depressed and stop eating

  • Last time I went to a zoo was in the 90's... just awful. didn't really feel right, like it once did as a child.

  • I think she is correct man now has competition because trust me I have worked with people less intelligent than koko

  • i work with people who you would say are less intelligent than koko. they have a right to live under the same laws as humans. so why shouldn't koko? then again, why shouldn't every animal? i'm not vegetarian, however i have this red light flashing...a human who knows less than koko is murder, koko who...certainly raises questions for me. (maybe wrongly) but what i'm saying is all animals should be treated humanly. a fox kills your chickens so what? we just kill to eat not survive!

  • And the researcher is very cute :D

  • @Gretgor666 She's also 64 now, mate.

  • @tehinfidel So? Marilyn Monroe is now a rotted skeleton- are we not allowed to find her attractive in her movies?

  • Comment removed

  • I think Koko was calling the researcher to go play in the tree with her at 8:38. I think she either didn't get the message or she's not that great a climber :)

Anyways, Koko is amazing, I love these videos.

  • They can't speak coz their larynx isn't as developed as ours.

  • @tehinfidel

Something I can really not understand is why they can't speak.

It's been shown that they can learn language, like Koko did, but still not able to reproduce our sounds. Parrots can speak even if perhaps they don't understand what they say. Why coudn't Koko learn how to say "MUM" or "Poop" and so on.

I have tryed to look for an answer and some scientinst blame a certain gene... but i am not sure I believe it. What's the difference betwin "HU HU HU" and "YOU YOU YOU" or "ME" or "WHY"?

  • @jandaletto Well, we share >98% of our genome with chimps, and near that with other great apes, so there's likely something in the last 2% that lets us produce language. This leads to culture and history we can pass on and continuously advance. Minus the language ability, many tribes of apes can learn and share things (culture), but they haven't reached our level of accomplishment, and while they can use tools, language (not just sounds, but communication) seems to be the last major difference.

  • @tehinfidel I think it's called the FoxP gene, there is some family that doesn't have it and whilst they're capable of understanding language they cannot speak. The FoxP gene is not present in monkeys but is in birds (presumably not all birds). It looks like a transcription factor so there'll be other genes involved but it's a big one. No FoxP = No Speaking.

  • @jandaletto That "certain gene" you are referring to, FOXP2, is actually probably the best explanation so far as to why apes are incapable of speech. After all, when the gene is mutated in humans you end up with speech disabilities and sometimes incapability of speech.

  • thank you for this....

  • Just because we are apart of nature doesnt mean theres no god. common man!

  • @BeatlesLennonjdi sorry but... haven't come across aliens yet i don't know if you have? (yet they have to exist- space= infinite infinite= infinite possibility infinite possibility= infinie chances of getting a 6 on a die etc) plus scientifically having the right amount of everything to support life according to what we know... sorry but plus humans = nothing... i would like somebody to prove me wrong but i can't see any evidence of god- but i CAN see evidence of evolution here. Thats all it is.

  • @MrStudioManic have you ever seen in your entire lifetime an ape turn into a human being...do you believe we were created by a vast nothingness that hits another nothing ness and creates life prove yourself right...thousands of years of evidence that the bible is true although god hasn't exactly shown up at our front door.

  • @Hant420 Evolution operates on populations, not individuals.

    Read a book.

    No, not that one.

  • Comment removed

  • @Hant420 If you think your expectation that an individual ape spontaneously turns into a human is "educated", you need to read about the Dunning-Kruger effect, as your caricature has absolutely nothing to do with the mechanism of speciation through natural selection.

  • Darwin’s thesis that human beings and apes are descended from a common ancestor was never supported by any scientific findings, neither when he first proposed it, not afterward. All the fossils obtained to date have proved that apes have always existed as apes, that human beings have always existed as human beings, that apes did not turn into humans and that apes, and that humans have no common ancestors.

  • @Hant420 "I don't personally know about it, therefore it doesn't exist."

Fossils are cool, and despite your whining, actually show common descent, but they're just one piece of the puzzle that's been discovered in the last 152 years, alongside comparative anatomy, biogeography, ring species, observed speciation, etc. But none of that holds a candle to the overwhelming evidence from molecular biology: the DNA evidence.

There's no excuse to be ignorant in 2011. Seriously, read a book.

  • @tehinfidel i'll just stop with trying to state my opinion and just say this...Darwin's theory of evolution, is just that, a theory, if it was completely true then it wouldn't be considered a theory( probably not a good point, but it's my opinion and i'll always be stubborn)

  • @Hant420 A theory in science is the final stage of the scientific method, after evidence is gathered to support the claim, and predictions can be made from it. Evolution, encompassing the fields I previously mentioned, led to scientists considering tectonic movement and species found in each stratum of rock, and thus being able to travel up to northern Canada and discover Tiktaalik exactly where they expected it to be.

Gravity is also a theory. Care to test it?

    Seriously, read a book.

  • @tehinfidel my mind is too discombobulated for your expertise, you obviously have more experience in science. I GIVE UP...GAME OVER...YOU WIN YOU WIN, and I've read a couple of books in my life lol,

  • @Hant420 Not trying to win, just correct misconceptions and thought-stopping cliches. Despite what you may have been told in the past, the evidence for evolution is very strong and very interesting. I really recommend you read up on it.

A few years ago, it would take a trip to the library to research. In 2011, there are countless resources right at your fingertips for learning about any subject imaginable. It has taken mankind millennia to get to this point. To waste it would be a shame.

  • @Hant420 Just look it up in google, youtube or wikipedia. It is very interesting so, you will spend months reading and reading about real science and real stuff. Don't be deceived by religious nut-jobs that just want to discredit the whole scientific community and believe that scientists around the world have a secret conspiracy to just disprove god(s) etc, when they have presented false evidence to try and defend their bible beliefs. Nothing against religion and I have read the bible 2 times ;)

  • @tehinfidel I read "Gravity is also a theory. Care to test it?" as "kill yourself". I love it.

  • @tehinfidel I'm lost :o I always thought a theory was simply like a big-picture version of a hypothesis? I thought it would be like the first step in the scientific method

  • @tehinfidel Wait, is gravity just a theory, or is it actually a proven thing.

    U makes my brains burp!

  • @Hant420 Just so you know: A scientific theory is the highest status an idea can ever reach. Also, evolution is both a theory and a fact because it is actually a proven fact that species change over time but it is still a theory in explaining how they change. When a hypothesis is upgraded to a THEORY, it needs to explain the facts and evolution explains all the facts. Evolution is not a belief, it's a conclusion.

  • @Hant420 If you pay attention to any scientific laws you 'll notice they only make a brief statement about a phenomenon, eg. "Mass is neither created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction." Okay, that's a handy thing to know, but why is mass not created or destroyed in chem. rxns? To _explain_ why, you'll need [what eventually broadens to] a theory. Evolution theory could be 100% confirmed accurate beyond all doubt by God himself and it would still be considered a theory, under science.

  • @Hant420 yes it is google evidence for common descend and you get a plethora of conclusive evidence that support the theory of evolution and common descend

  • @Hant420 Eww, you're ignorant and have internet access.

  • @Hant420 Evolution is a theory supported by all aspects of science. The fact that you don't want to believe it does not change that. Humans, chimps and bonobos share the same ancestor. Have you heard about neanderthals? Homo-erectus etc? Look it up in wikipedia or youtube and maybe you can learn something! Learn about evolution first. It's not something people believe, its just the most logical conclusion reached, supported by hundreds of thousands of factual evidence and it also explain facts.

  • @Hant420 We have the same biological structure how can you possibly deny all of this I believe that putting are selves above the animals is Extremely self - centered, conceited, vain, and narcissistic. There's a phrase i like to refer to "Magic is just science we dont understand, and science is magic that we've learned" i am NOT asking you to change (not like most religions would) but i do ask that you evolve or progress religion want you to be stupid so it can stay in control,Why cant we get along

  • "western civilization from its inception had always argued that man was created in the image of god and was intrinsicly different from animals and nature Darwin's theory of evolotion already shattered this view of man's uniqueness..."

man i just loved it when the guy said that...made me feel more happy then i am knowing there is no god :)

  • APART OF NATURE ? ?. . . NATIVE AMERICANS NEW THAT THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO ! ! !

  • It's tremendous irony for the zookeeper to oppose this type of interaction on the grounds that it's "unnatural".

  • 1:24, she's moaning

  • i heard koko died....is this true?

if it is true then i am sad =(

  • Poor gorilla!, she should have lived free. She was a sad creature because of the selfish researchers

  • @mentayflor are you retarded? seriously? just shut the fuck up, you're making yourself look idiotic

  • Penny, lose the lab coat already.

  • can somebody please tell me if koko is still alive?does she had a family?a husband and a baby?

  • @SuperAileen79 she's still alive, but hasn't mated yet..

  • Thank you so much for uploading this.

  • " KOKO DO YOU WANT TO FUCK NOW!? " 0:09

  • Thank you for uploading this. Is there a more up-to-date documentary? From what I hear Penny is still with Koko even after all of these years.

  • @Br4veDave Glad you liked it! I'm not aware of or have seen more recent documentaries. She/they may do clips here and there, and I have heard of visitors, but you may need to be "important" (e.g. Robin Williams made a joke about visiting Koko in a recent stand-up show.) Wackypedia may know more.

  • @Br4veDave i think koko died in 2000 :(

  • ironically, i didn't watch the video for the ape, i watched it because of the chick

  • Does she knows Bad words ? lol

  • This was amazing... it makes me reflect on how we use being "aware" of oneself, yesterday and tomorrow as well as someone's ability to speak using vocal chords as indicators of intelligence. We've even referred to someone mute as "dumb" because he or she wasn't able to express vocally as if that made them unintelligent. But life teaches that often authentic communication isn't even present in the words we speak & truly living in the present is as worthy as or greater than planning the future.

  • Beautiful documentary, bur I think the girl might have some mental problems.. something about her disturbs me...

  • @svantezor compared to other people she is very normal

  • @svantezor Probably because she's hanging out with a gorilla for 40 years.

  • The zoo keeper is a fool.

  • Thank you so much for uploading this! It's great and it gives me a lot to think about.

  • 5:51 nice bellbottoms

  • i was just thinking about how amazing it would be if koko was bred and had a significant family, after some time passes they release the family of talking gorillas in africa. if they retain language through generations they might develoup some kind of culture and god knows what in time

  • wonderful. thanks for the upload and thanks youtube for allowing it to stand for the benefit of our learning.

  • a mute child with average IQ

  • The next step now is to teach Koko to demonsrate for her rights! And to vote and participate in politics!

  • The next step now is to teach Koko to demonsrate for her rights!

  • woooooooh she compaired koko to a child with disabilities

    :O

  • @MrJarth yer i dint like the way she said that but there's still the point that koko realy is just a less evolved human but yer she is disabled by human standers

  • I thought this was a pretty interesting study. Unlike some of the people involved I still believe we humans are a step above the rest and that there is a God but that's just me.

  • This gorilla knows more sigh languege than me........... maybe it's not as hard as I thought?

  • blacks weren't considered to have souls. Some of the very primitive black man i would say is closer to animal than human in the way they think and survive. I think ik

  • I love these peaceful animals.

  • give gorillas the right to vote!
