she should have recorded this with her more recent accompanist Malcolm Marineau. This is amazing playing but that other guy is bloody awesome. Check their live performance!
ok I got it. Hahn adapted this song from a poem about the mythical story of Chloris. Chloris is a wife of a mythical god who abducted Chloris and gave her dominion over plants and flowers. Chloris is another name for Chloe which means green, yellow or something along the lines of plants and flowers.

An aberration for any musicologist. BUT out of a miracle, appears a rare masterpiece one having to be deaf and idiot not to recognise....

Heavenly also are the lyrics: If it is true, Chloris, tha you do love me--and I have heard, you love me well--then I do believe kings themselves could hardly match my happiness. Death would be most inopportune to come and alter my good fortune just to please the heavens! All that is said of ambrosia can hardly compare to the magic of your eyes bestowing their gaze on me.
So so beautiful. Hahn was a genius, for all the reasons this performance is so perfect - sheer, understated emotion. It's almost Mozartian in its simplicity and power.

just don't get it. there is so much great music for voice. this is just uninteresting entertainment. no direction, no structure, just one nice idea...! is of course a matter of taste, but don´t think this has really lasting values...
She made a recital last month (august 18 and 19) in São Paulo, Brazil singing wonderfully "Les Nuits d'Été", Berlioz. After the recital I went to her dressing-room at the Sala São Paulo Concert Hall and she played at the piano and sung this song for me and more 2 friends. A moment that I will never forget as long as I live. I love you Mrs. Graham !
one of the best interpretations I've heard of this song. Mrs. Graham has such a warm and embracing sound that it seems this song was written for her voice. Brava!
When I first Susan Graham singing this song, I thanked God for that priviledge. If there's a heaven, this must be the music playing over there.

Who painted the portrait on minute 35?

in 0:35, 1:35 or 2:35.
Can you be more precise, please.

@amayaros I'm not sure, but it looks like something by John Singer Sargent.

This song is so sweet it always leaves me misty-eyed. The pianist and singer both do this gorgeously... thanks for posting.

Beautiful. Hahn sounds almost 18th-century in this piece. Nice singing and pictures too.

I used to think only a tenor, like Martyn Hill, could do justice to these songs. Then a friend played me the Graham. Blew me away.
