it's like, fact. jazz musicians are either raspy black guys, or nerdy lookin white guys. this band just happens to have all nerdy lookin white guys. and guess what? they're all smokin. no, wait, your right, there must be something racial about it.
no, look sometimes u can close ur eyes and tell whether a player is black. Because to play with "soul" is really just to play with a genuine feeling that comes from real experience. Its the same with singers, and actors, they had to experience something real; many racial experiences that affect blacks in a unique way that others cannot relate to. These experiences contribute to the emotion thats reflected through their sound. N White people will NEVER understand this. Thats all im sayin.
you are a bigot. to imply that white people don't have any "real experiences" is horrendously ignorant on your part. All forms of human life are put through their own individual trials and tribulations. Your statement is so false and inaccurate, why don't you go listen to some Bill Evans if you want some soul in your music.
you're a fucking retard. there sound doesn't make them "black" its the way black people swing. And some white people swing way harder than some black people.
If you are black you should understand this. but hey, it's cool that a white guy has to explain thigns to you. nice
I think this guy and eric marienthal make your opinion worthless... just kidding, I just had to say it. I actually agree, but there some people out there that can control it and make the brightness work for em.
Eyes open or closed I also wonder why there were no black members in this band and why so often in this day and age so many groups , be they jazz , rock , funk , whatever are still so monochromatic . where there really no first call musicians that just happened to not be white available ?. thoughts anyone ?
what a pile of bollox! was Duke Ellington white. No! Count Basie - No! Wynton Marsalis - No! Art Blakey - No! Was Bill Evans (who played in a trio) black - No! What about Brad Mehldau - No! Ok...what about Dave Brubeck - No! The point is you cant generalise - just sit back and enjoy the music instead of trying to sound clever......
He may have a few characteristics of Sanborn's sound, but his tone is a lot less edgy and more warm most of the time. I like his sound better than Sanborn's.
where are the black people in this band? I mean, come on. All white jazz group? These guys need some soul, and i'm not talking about the bottom of my shoe.
Jazz is beyond the color of skin. Soul is not represented by skin color. Music is one language truly, understood by few. Musicians are practically a race in itself. This is great jazz. How dare you bring race into this! That mentality will get you absolutely nowhere. This is a hell of a song, awesome! I love the David Matthews Manhattan Jazz Orchestra.
so if the band had 1 black member, it would have 1/16 soul, 4 black members, 1/4 soul? help me out, give me a ratio of how many people it takes with dark pigment of skin to make your standard of having "soul". I bet if you closed your eyes, you wouldn't be able to tell what the colors of the members were. I can't believe it; 2008 and there are still dinosaurs like you roaming the jazz-earth.

Incidently,
Most of these members are first-call musicians in NY. Listen to some cuts of Ryan Kisor and tell me how much "soul" he has.

if you look at big bands, they're all white, generally. perhaps the female singer is black. lots of them are jewish too.
the black people tend to play beebop like charlie parker, miles davis etc. where there is a lot more freedom and space to explore.
