  • love this song, didnt hear hear it for year, now im happy:D

  • I seem to remember Andy, in an interview, describing this as "Vaughan Williams with a hard-on". I think that's apt.

  • I have to say that this will always be one of my favorite songs. So frustrating that (last I checked) iTunes doesn't seem to have this song available for download. Of course, that may just mean I need to diversify my places for getting music again...

  • The Green Man. Mother Nature's son. The source, well hung wellspring of all prospective creatives. Bless you and by gum Mr. Partridge. I think you've caught his scent...!!!

  • This is probably what is in Charlie's head whenever he puts on the green man gear.

  • this is the first i have heard of this group cause my marching band is playing a spin off of this song in our show. its kinda neet. :)

  • Brings back memories of driving from Indianapolis, IN to Toganoxie, KS for the Midwest Men's Festival. Good times.

  • this song is my wedding song <3 ilyaf <3

  • This is my first time hearing of these guys. I just came across "Mermaid Smiled". So far I really like what I've heard. They're really good!

  • @kaikauruwashii ;-) Actually, they're better than that even!

  • "...And it harm none, do what you will."

  • such an kickassawesomeincerdible band.

also: from 6:02 it kinda reminds me of the COD1 soundtrack. anyone?

  • 3 people on here obviously like Bieber, Dokken and Chad Brock

  • I think Mike Batt did the orchestral arrangements. That's Mike Batt of 'Bright Eyes' and 'The Wombles' fame.

  • When i think of all the corporate crap that's make the commercial airwaves and a band like this gets buried it reminds me that the music industry is a JOKE! Long live Mr Partridge and Moulding!!

  • jedna z nejlepších kapel všech dob, nikdy doceněná -XTC forever

  • Hey- never heard this song before-- pretty cool-- I have both dukes of stratosphere too-- you guys ROCK!

  • @bruce369able Love Psonic Psunspot.....The Affiliated and Little Lighthouse are awesome...

  • Partridge and Moulding create white magic.

  • Not to poo-poo this version, but I like the demo better...

  • Heard this song for the first time yesterday. Since then, I've played it about 12 times. I can't freaking get enough of it. The whole album (Apple Venus, Volume 1) is really amazing.

  • @CartoonMuhammed I hope in the last year you've managed to get through the other 34 (That's THIRTY FIVE albums!!! Of sheer bliss!!!!)

  • Brilliance.

  • clean version

  • i love the green man!

  • I used to listen to this song to snowboard down a 5km course in the winter. The ride becomes an adventure.

  • @reivenlocke Well if I could I would join you on that downhill slide. Perfect music to glide over the white stuff.

  • Love the genre in this piece. Such talented musicians. I am so honored to have been introduced to them through a great fan of theirs. (5:58 really a switch from original genre---what genius these musicians show in their work. ) I LOVE this one too. : -))))))) Agree grandpatazan the bafoon a great touch. Peace and Love!

  • Andy Partridge is an angel, or the equivalent. The green motif is nice, perhaps not truly accurate, but the point is it makes you feel like a child of the earth... this guy is like all of Woodstock rolled into a a single song!

Saw them on Michigan Ave in chicago in the late 80's, WXRT show, none cooler!

  • @xyaqua Thanks for your lovely reply.:-) Brought me to this beautiful groups genre. I NEEDED more then you will ever know. The Dear Friend that introduced me to XTC is on my mind right Now, a beautiful Being beyond words like this group. Thanks xyaqua for pulling me here. Love and Peace to YOU.:-)

  • You are paramount in graciousness, with your most kind letter. XTC seem to bring out the best in a person, no? They may not be the hard rocking type, or a smooth synth, or raw grunge, but they have a connection to the soul that regularly brings tears to my eyes.

It is so ironic that the man who wrote _dear God_, is one of the most potentates to me for the existence of a higher being..

May i offer a conundrum? look up the word "Noumena" and dare tell me it not relevant to XTC...

    b/r

  • @xyaqua :-)))I looked up the WORD and I do agree 100 per cent with your dare. :-) I had to look up conundrum, heard this used so Had to refresh mind, due to takes a while for new words to stick to my "Music mind." ;-) Oh I love the word conumdrum, (My partner that Now has crossed/over Jan.27,2007--used riddles in his talk all the time, but DID not know this until He led me on this New Path of awakening) So I agree that the division of 'Thing-in-itself' and phenomina only exists in our Mind. :-)

  • Awesome. Thanks for sharing this.

  • my favourite one on apple 1 -- it´s so bright and cheerful, could be a traditional!!

  • i love the intro with the bafoon

  • i love them till 1977

  • Really great song glad i got the album!

  • perfect song for May Day :-)

  • IMO Apple Venus I is XTC's best.

  • I don't know- with Dave Gregory leaving during the sessions, I think XTC started to lose their edge, which I felt was even more apparent in 'Wasp Star'. Not that I don't find most of Apple Venus very enjoyable.

  • fu**ing gorgeous. thanks.

  • Greenman

    Yes

    Indeed

  • i've listened to a bunch of these guys songs now, and this one is by far my favorite.

  • hey, im only 13, and i love these guys. me dad turned me on to them, and ive liked them since i was 2. great band, but i must disagree with u that apple venus was their best record....i think apple venus volume 2 was their best

  • There is no best XTC song. They are all brilliant in their own way. One day it's this song, the next month it's that one. Love this band's sheer unpredictability and scope. They're always a sheer delight to listen to.

  • @TheSecondStain hitting nail on the head, there.

  • I tore my place apart looking for this cd. It mysteriously disappeared along with my Best of Bing Crosby cd. Great song, I wish we could sing it in church.

  • This is the best XTC song, and Apple Venus is the best XTC album. Say what you will about Skylarking, but this song rules.

  • i LOVE this song!!!!!!! XTC is amazing, why more people don't know/like them, I'll never know.

  • My favorite song from AV I.

  • Some of the American released albums have shorter versions (as with most Kula Shaker singles tracks).

How much more "English" can you make a track i wonder..

  • OH JOY!! You're my new favorite Youtuber for posting these lovely Apple Venus tracks.

*giggling like a schoolgirl to hear these!*

  • give it 17 seconds.

  • Great song. Only Andy Partridge can turn the word "million" into a three-syllable word. Genius at work!

  • I have this song, except the version I own is only 4:29, as compared to this 6:23 version: the intro is shorter and the song also fades out quite quickly. I wish I had this version!

  • I took this version from their album, greetings from Berlin

  • my second favorite XTC song, and my third favorite song in the world. (doctor roberts is the first. generals in majors is the second, and greenman is third.) i also love the ugly underneath, dear madam barnum, great fire burning, you're dictionary, earn enough for us, and many others. subscribe to me!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks- if this album and Wasp Star are their final 2 releases as XTC (and it seems Colin is no longer interested in XTC or in songwriting), they went out on a really high note--

  • This song does exist, I've finally found it Ha ha. I remember a year ago when I tried to google XTC+green man I wouldn't get anything relevant, I used to think maybe I mixed up the artist or the name of the song but now it feels good to not know I'm crazy. Fantastic song BTW

  • Bring XTC back together!!!

  • Hear, hear!

  • I remember whem this album was released. They had been on hiatus for quite a while. So I was super excited and when this song, the first one on the album, burst from my speakers, I was in heaven. Fabulous. I,ve been since 1980 amd they have never disappointed.

  • I played Apple Venus so many times in my car, my girls, who are now teenagers, know this song inside out and want to hear it every time we travel. I told them the orchestra part at the end can be heard throughout the song if they just listened hard enough...they had

never thought to listen to a piece of music so closely before...awesome!

  • thats like me!

everytime i go on a car journey i have to listen to this!

  • MAGNIFIQUE !

  • Hey man tanks for teh EXTEECEE. Keep dis here playse - its on my playlist and I listen all de time. Yow - beauty. Cheers from Cananananada.

  • You´re welcomeI´m an absolute XTC-Fan, I´ve even got the two "The Dukes of Stratosphere" Albums. Happy new year from Berlin in Germany.

  • @cloak616 It makes me wanna dance- if that's any indication?

  • Thank you so much for this. The link on the band's website that allows you to hear it for free is broken.

  • wow...i love all these. thank you.
