On IMDB it had said that he was actually playing.... i'm sure the sound was recorded inside of a studio to ensure better sound quality, but no emotion can be faked the way that the boy was playing
@VVVvicks331 - I always thought that. I had actually seen the telecast on Bravo (a cable channel) in 2002 of the concert for the Red Violin held in Montreal - and Christoph Koncz really did play those pieces!
hi, I'm from Brazil, already have much time but I saw the movie "The Red Violin." There's a scene in which Kaspar Weiss Poussin and his tutor, going to the hearing, Gaspar Poussin and sing a melody, (PA, PA, PA, papapap), I would like to know the name or author of this tune, where can I buy the music.
I wish they had let him play for the prince. It wouldn't have affected the story line if he had played the piece he worked so hard on and then collapsed. I would have liked that much better
Attention all musicians: 4:30 - 6:02 is what is called "woodshedding". It is the difference between you and every other musician out there. The more "shed" time you put in, the more of a master of your instrument you will be....
where can i find the notes for the piece played for the guy from Vienna? i have the red violin caprices notes by john corigliano but the piece played for the maestro at 1:35 isnt in the book!!! help me please!! ive already figured out some of the notes but I want the notes , please help it would b much much appreciated
@MyMerryMelodies - It did? Okay, so I checked: It won the Oscar in 2000 for Best Music, Original Score - John Corigliano. Gee, I learn something new everyday! ;o)
i really love the first piece kaspar played, that is, joshua bell =D only joshua's interpretation could be that...that...how can i describe it? sublime.
@Sergio0s Indeed, he is now the voice leader of the 2nd violins at the Vienna Philharmonics Orchestra (which includes playing in the States Opera Orchestra)
Let us not forget--all violin music in this film is played by Joshua Bell, who is one of the most interesting violinists of our time. Only his consistency is sometimes a bit lacking...but in good form, he is absolutely fascinating!--Like in his performances in this film.
The music that the boy is playing with the metronome is not possible to be played on a baroque violin (which is what he is using). The fingerboard is about an inch shorter, thus, reducing the range of pitch. The notes that are way up in the ledger are higher than the baroque violin can play because there is no fingerboard where one would need to put their fingers. Luckily we have Joshua Bell who can play that on his Stradivarius with a modern fingerboard!
@mrsherman109 Thank you for that information, I Did know that the kid in the move was NOT playing the Violin, and that Joshua Bell WAS. I did not, however, know the other information you provided!! Must be a Violin expert and or teacher! Thanks!!
Some movies have soundtracks that drag the movie down, others have once that make them better, most fall in the middle.
This is definitely a movie whose soundtrack improves the movie greatly. The movie is worth watching once as a movie, but the soundtrack is higher quality and worth repeating far more times.

depends on how good you are at shifting, and it takes some very good bowing technique, as im sure you can tell. But you can look up the red violin sheet music online and see for yourself. Parts are very hard, and some parts are quite doable.
All music written and arranged by John Corigliano. The first piece which was played by the orphans is a Baroque variation of the red violin's theme. The audition for Monsieur Poussin is a variation of Bach's violin concertos with the red violin's theme infused throughout. The last piece which Kaspar was practicing so diligently, is another variation from The Red Violin Caprices, the first variation on the sheet music.

my friend was supposed to be in this movie (i've posted videos of him in my youtube -carmen-) since it was shot where he lived but unfortunately visa problems and red tape messed everything up for him
What's the full title of this movie, and the year it was released? I've been searching for it but all I can find are some movie with Samuel Jackson(NOT what I want in a musical movie, for sure), and some modern documentary-type movie.
The full title is "The Red Violin" and released in 1998. It traces its journey from one owner to the next over the span of about 300 years to the present, covering three continents.
Samuel Jackson plays a violin appraiser set in present day Montreal to investigate the identity of this mysterious red violin.
Thanks for this info! Do you happen to know what John Corigliano's influence was for this particular piece?
The first one that Kaspar played was Baroque for example and the second was a play on Bach's violin concertos. I just can't recognize the influence, if any, on the last piece.
I saw an interview of John Corigliano on YouTube (v=jt6innUUM_c) and he said some pieces had no particular influence or variation of the red violin's theme. Maybe this is one of them.
Yeah! At first I wasn't sure if Christoph Koncz was playing the violin for real in the movie. I just couldn't believe that a kid could have such mastery of the violin at such a young age.
But I learned it was true when I saw a concert on Bravo (cable channel) that played all the music from the movie. Yes! He really *did* play all those pieces. He was incredible!
I also saw the look on Joshua Bell's face. I could have sworn he was jealous!
Joshua Bell played most of the pieces - especially for the actor who played the Englishman, Pope, during his concert when he had that flash of "inspiration."
Christoph Koncz played the pieces for his part himself. He comes from a musical family - his father is a conductor and his mother is a musician. He himself has been playing the violin since he was four.
You can check out his website listed under my synopsis of this clip.
Well, back then they didn't have Wii (wonder if they'll come out with Orchestra - a classical version of Rockband), PS3 or XBox so they had plenty of time to practice! Just kidding.
Yeah, if it weren't for the magic of movie production, instead of hearing the London or New York Philharmonic, they probably sound like the strings orchestra I was forced to listen to in assembly during junior high school. Brrrr!
But I don't really know. Christoph Koncz at that age, however, is *that* good!
Poor kid just dropped dead....
