@wulantika I agree that the title bit annoying and Japanese Gana is rooting from chinese character but hangul is not from Chinese Character. Hangul is not match to part of Chinese Character.
the title bit annoying. I guess hangul is just a simplicity from Chinese Kanji. Japanese and Korean are rooting from Chinese character,so I guess Chinese is best represent.
hangul can express all pronunciation. but learner think it's pronunciation is hard to understand because other alphabet can't express some of pronunciation. FUCK STUPID CRITIC. @sendtochihiro Hey I used to live in Germany for decades I know the Latin alphabet and Hangul. If I compare them they are both good. But in some cases like the computer keyboard layout Hangul is much faster, logical and more effective to Latin alphabet. You even don't know Hangul, learn it before you argue. And regarding homophones. It is indeed a disadvantage. This is a problem Hangul shares with Latin. But there are more advantages than disadvantages compared to other writing system.
@sendtochihiro This same problem exists in latin alphabet. We in lithuanian language (latin alphabet) have many coinciding words, so does english language and so on. In the most cases it's not that big issue at all, because in the sentence the meaning can be seen clearly from it's position and relation to other words in the sentence.Hanja (Kanji) has it's pros and cons, but learning edge makes it very very unpractical. There's lots of hype around Hangul, but actually korean writing system is good.
But when it comes to beauty, then one's opinion doesn't really matter. The nicest sounding language is mandarin, the most amazing to me is korean because of Brown Eyed Girls, while the most beautiful scripts are tamil & egyptian hieroglyphs. Lets use hieroglyphs in science! There, nuff said. :D
When I read the title of this video, I thought what an awful low self-esteem do koreans have. "Shall we spread love around the world?" - "aniyo (no), hangeul!". "Wouldn't doing charity be better?" - "aniyo, hangeul is good enough" :/
This is something I would expect from communists but even capitalist-turned chinese don't do this. It must be difficult for a korean to be squeezed between two superpowers. Look, you don't need to spread hangeul to make yourself feel good. You need a psychiatrist!
@StandingRedPanda I think you have low self esteem. Why so concerned about this issue? Do you feel offended? Put your effort in other useful things. Just igore it if you dont like it. You dont have to come to this video.

@sendtochihiro Who said that Hangul is perfect? Hangul has disadvantages like Latin as it is a phonetic alphabet. But in the full package Hangul is best. Hey, we live in the digital age. And Hangul suits it much better than other writing systems especially Chinese logographic system. I can speak German and Korean. But with Hangul you have a faster stroke on your keyboard. Hangul and Latin are of same kind of alphabet. But Hangul is build up more logically. Therefore best for digital age.
@puppyspawpackspunch granted, IPA is not used on a regular basis because it is not designed for any specific language, no language uses all possible phonemes. I also have a problem with it being called the "most scientific" because that's a very vague statement, In what way is it the most scientific ? what does that even mean ?
I would have to disagree with the Idea that Hangul is the Most scientific. That would have to be IPA, which is designed to represent every possible phoneme a person can make. Hangul is not able to do that.

"even the fool one will learn in 10 days." I guess this is true. I had learned how to read and write simple hangul in an hour or two. Within the day, I had learned how to read and write simple korean words without any guide from any kind of learning material. I'm only 16 years old. And I guess I could say anyone in my age would have difficulty to learn any kind of language but Hangul was surprisingly easy for me. Out of all 4 languages I'm tried to learn, Hangul is the easiest one.
@luv2sd Yes. Latin characters were initially used for Latin. But it also suits Other indo-European languages very well. It's because of all indo-european languages share some similar features. They are all from indo-european language family. The same reasoning applies to Hangul. hangul was initially used for Korean. It many also suit other languages by either linguistic kinship ore coincidence. But it cannot be applicable to all languages in the world. The title of the clip is an exaggeration.
@herifuzhenguan3 no it's not an exaggeration. the video only used quotes from what other experts already said about Hangul. it contains no personal opinion or thought about Hangul. look at all the quotes and names under them.
0:30 "It is equipped with the most unique and scientific signal system that can be found nowhere else in the world" by Edwin O. Reischauer (a professor of linguistics at HARVARD UNIVERSITY)
unless you have equivalent or better knowledge in linguistics than this Harvard professor, you are out of league. I'm sorry but Chinese characters just don't come anywhere close to the efficiency of Hangul. it's the linguistic experts that made the claim that Hangul is the best, not the video.
@herifuzhenguan3 well the title of the clip is a direct quotation from one of the linguist in Harvard. Koreans never said this before someone else in a foreign country said this to them, of which they were greatful.
its nice to read Chinese and Japanese because they have meaning to the characters, its more satisfying. I am learning Korean now and I must say... so much easier to learn!!
Eh, I thought I was going to be introduced to the reasons behind the claim, but all I saw was a strange commercial for a language. Do Koreans need this kind of masturbatory notions to avoid feeling inferior?
I think it would be more accurate to say hangul is one of the the best alphabet for foreigners learning the language. I really think the "best" alphabet is the one you grew up using.
@ThePinklimeade It's not a cultural pride thing. neither Pinyin or Zhuyin could record Chinese language without serious ambiguousness and the decrease of reading speed. Because of the same reason, japanese still use Kanji instead of only using Kana.
Hangul is kind of amazing for Korean language, but that does not mean it is the best for all languages. The writing system is based on the language. Hangul could record the Korean language very well in most cases. However, it may or may not be true for other languages. Even in today's Korean, Hanja (Chinese Character) is needed sometimes to eliminate the ambiguousness.
@herifuzhenguan2 You are confusing Hangul with the Korean language. Hangul was invented by King Sejong and his team of scholars. The Korean language certainly isn't the best language in the world but the Hangul characters are. Hangul is even being exported to some countries in Southeast Asia that don't have writing system. Try exporting Chinese characters for Southeast Asians to use as their writing system LOL!
@luv2sd You lack some commonsense of linguistics. Scripts are tools to record language. Different languages have different features, so are different scripts. We must relate to language itself to say if a kind of script is scientific. If one kind of script could well record all features of a certain language in most convenient way, like Hangul of Korean in most cases, then we can say hangul is scientific for Korean language. But that doesn't mean Hangul is good for every language. (part1)
@herifuzhenguan3 You are still very confused. If you are not confused, then you are deliberately showing your jealousy because Chinese characters come nowhere close to simplicity and versatility of Hangul.
.
And I don't think you even know much about linguistics. You haven't used any linguistic term in your post.
.
The Korean language existed far before Hangul was invented. Hangul was not just designed for the Korean language. It was designed by King Sejong and a group of top scientists.
@luv2sd For example, for Japanese language, Hangul would be a lousy writing system because Japanese language consists of single-vowel open syllables. It would be very inefficient and inconvenient to use Hangul to record Japanese. For languages with not many ending consonants, like Mandarin Chinese, Hangul is not scientific either. (part 2)
@herifuzhenguan3 ok then do you think Japanese characters or Chinese characters can be used to accurately and efficiently express English sounds? if you speak Chinese, write pronounciation symbols for this word: "refrigerator". let's see how "efficient" or "scientific" Chinese characters are.
@luv2sd God. You are really fanatic. As having said, scripts are designed for its own languages. Chinese characters are designed to record Chinese languages. it suits Chinese language very well. Similarly, Japanese kanji and kana for Japanese language. Neither Chinese characters nor Japanese kana can represent English very well. Hangul was invented to record Korean. It can amazingly record Korean languages in most cases. But it doesn't mean that it could record other languages very well. (1)
@herifuzhenguan3 I will give you one good example - English alphabets WERE NOT developed for English alone. This fact singlehandedly disproves everything you say or believe in.
Read below article and you will learn the difference between a language and linguistic characters.
The Hangeul Alphabet Moves beyond the Korean Peninsula
@luv2sd for instance, the English words "class" can't be perfectly transferred to Hangul because no consonant clusters, such as "cl" "gl" "cr", exits in Korean language so that Hangul can't represent them. It's basically because Hangul was initially invented for Korean. All Chinese languages have tonal systems. How can Hangul represent that? Japanese language almost only has open syllables. There are no consonant at the end of a word. Isn't it unnecessary to use Hangul to record japanese? (2)
@luv2sd Hangul is definitely an amazing invention of 世宗大王. It's very creative and suits Korean language very well. It may be also proper to some other languages. But it's totally an exaggeration to say "Hangeul is the best alphabet in the world that all languages dream of" or "It is the most scientific characters in the world".
@herifuzhenguan3 dude it's not the Koreans who said Hangul is the best. it's the western linguists who said that. watch the video again and look under the quote. you will see that the majority of the quotes were from book writers or linguistics professors from America or Europe.
ok, i have heard so often that korean is the most scientif writing o fall but why? i think that chinese and japanese is much more fascinating, hangeul is just some chinese sighn fragments, anyway it is so easy to learn (i started half a week ago and know can read everything but slowly in korean)
The Japanese writing system is nearly identical to the Chinese Hanzi (Kanji), their other two writing scripts (Hiragana and Katakana) are highly inefficient phonetic alphabet that uses Chinese logograph fragments or desperate attempts to look like it. Chinese writing is also inefficient in that it requires you to memorise nearly 2000 characters, all of which with it's own unique sound. With Hangul you can use 24 of it's consonants and vowels and create the same number of sounds
Additionally, the shapes of the the consontants g/k, n, s, m and ng are graphical representations of the speech organs used to pronounce them. Also the shapes of the the vowels are based on three elements: man (a vertical line), earth (a horizontal line) and heaven (a dot) but in modern Hangeul the heavenly dot has mutated into a short line. That to me is combining art and logic into one beautiful form, more fascinating than any other writing system I have studied.
@omoshiroidayo i totally disagree, chinese and japanese in my opinion, (IN MY OPINION) IS MORE, ..... LETS SEE, UNORGANIZED? srry it was in capsbut, anyways, all im trying to say is that korean has a mre organized and a very easy alphabet than chinese or japanese,
@omoshiroidayo korean letters aren't derived from the chinese letters. katakana and hiragana's shape are mostly influenced from the chinese letters... I don't see how an asian person would look at korean and say that it looks like chinese letters unless they think that a square shape ㅁ, round shape ㅇ and a ㄹ shape (that's really about it) is from china or something..
Well you get the point lol, English and French are not 100% phonetic scripts, and as much as many 2nd language learners of the two hate it, it still doesn't make things any much harder. Also, it would be nearly impossible to standardise a phonetic spelling for English. Historically, culturally and dialectally, English speakers are too diverse.
Nice video 5/5 but I beg to differ on the matter of Hangeul being the "best" alphabet in the world. It may be one of the best looking alphabets out there but you would have to factor in its importance. The fact is that it is only officially used by 2 language groups! Korean and Cia-Cia. In comparison, the Latin alphabet and its derivatives are used officially by dozens if not hundreds of languages.
Not to mention the fact that the Latin alphabet allows for adaptation and every language using the Latin script has assigned different sound values to each letter.
@viiietdude The main reason why this happened is because korean was developed few years ago, while latin is much older. Also there are many other factors such as the Roman empire that forced latin into many countries, while korea used chinese for thousand of years before they created the korean. I'm korean and I'm proud our language is considered this way even though it is a language that comparing to latin and roots is just a newborn baby.
it is ridiculously easy to learn the vowels and consenants and be able to read words and sound them out, the hard part is just knowing what the words mean lol
The beauty of this alphabet is its simplicity. It takes very little time to learn and with just basic vowels and consonants, thousands of syllables can be constructed. Words are spelled as they sound, and many different sounds are condensed into a small alphabet that is simple to write and read.
For those people complaining that it doesn't have some English sounds, you can say the same for English not having even half of the sounds you can make with this alphabet.
I don't like it in English when they put "e"s at the end for no reson but Spanish & languages similar to it like Italian are the EASIEST. One letter per sounds. Easy to pronounce.
Allow me to demonstrate. The English language has only been around since around the year 450 AD. The history of the language may be divided roughly into 3 periods, the Old English period (450 AD - 1066), the Middle English period (1066 ~ 1500) and the Modern English period (1500+). English is a language belonging to the western branch of the Germanic language family meaning it is somehow related to German and Dutch.
For example, the verb 'shave' originates in the Old English period as 'sceafan' or 'scafan'. Since there wasn't yet a fully standardised English writing, different people spelt words differently, anyway 'sceafan/scafan' was then written as 'schafen/schaven' in Middle English. At this time it was pronounced something like 'shar-fen/shar-ven'. However, between 1450 and 1750 a process known as the Great Vowel Shift took place where the pronunciation of words like 'schaven' became 'shay-ven'
Modern English is a melting pot of languages in itself. You can see words from near and far, from Germanic (oversee) to French (survey) to Latin (supervise)...
It's actually a very fascinating history. I just hope you learnt something today XD.
That doesn't have to do ANYTHING about my coments. Some 'e's are useless such as composite. And what with one? Why is it pronounced won. And the t in listen, a in Cocoa and so MANY More examples. Two to and to? why is 2 two and pronounced too instead of tuo. to isnstead of toe.
As I said, English has evolved throughout time and has absorbed words from all over. Much of the spelling has remained the same since hundreds of years ago.
The e in composite is because the word was borrowed from French. The number one in OE is an and ME is on. It's to do with sound change.
The number two was originally pronounced "twa", a > o and just like many other words we never bothered to change the spelling. Hence, English has one of the most irregular spelling systems in the world. Same with French.
At the end of the day, one must realise that English, like French does not use 100% phonetic writing. English is around 80-85% regular if you learn rules for it. Not even Hangeul does.
@ifx1732 The thing is... there is no languages that have all the sounds of every single language.... I don't get why people discuss that, there are obviously going to be some sounds in a laguage that other doesn't have.
@wulantika I agree that the title bit annoying and Japanese Gana is rooting from chinese character but hangul is not from Chinese Character. Hangul is not match to part of Chinese Character.

It many also suit other languages by either linguistic kinship ore coincidence. But it cannot be applicable to all languages in the world. The title of the clip is an exaggeration.
herifuzhenguan3 1 year ago
@herifuzhenguan3 no it's not an exaggeration. the video only used quotes from what other experts already said about Hangul. it contains no personal opinion or thought about Hangul. look at all the quotes and names under them.

@herifuzhenguan3 0:22 "Hangeul is the most scientific characters in the world" by Geoffrey Sampson (authoer of 'Writing systems')
why don't you argue with him instead of venting on youtube? this video honestly doesn't contain any personal opinion about Hangul.

unless you have equivalent or better knowledge in linguistics than this Harvard professor, you are out of league. I'm sorry but Chinese characters just don't come anywhere close to the efficiency of Hangul. it's the linguistic experts that made the claim that Hangul is the best, not the video.
luv2sd 1 year ago
@herifuzhenguan3 well the title of the clip is a direct quotation from one of the linguist in Harvard. Koreans never said this before someone else in a foreign country said this to them, of which they were greatful.

the Chinese also have Pinyin and zhuyin
which could be used like hangeul.
but they have alot of cultural pride which keeps them using the traditional chracters.
ThePinklimeade 1 year ago
@ThePinklimeade It's not a cultural pride thing. neither Pinyin or Zhuyin could record Chinese language without serious ambiguousness and the decrease of reading speed. Because of the same reason, japanese still use Kanji instead of only using Kana.
herifuzhenguan3 1 year ago
Hangul is kind of amazing for Korean language, but that does not mean it is the best for all languages. The writing system is based on the language. Hangul could record the Korean language very well in most cases. However, it may or may not be true for other languages. Even in today's Korean, Hanja (Chinese Character) is needed sometimes to eliminate the ambiguousness.
herifuzhenguan2 1 year ago

(part1)
herifuzhenguan3 1 year ago
@herifuzhenguan3 You are still very confused. If you are not confused, then you are deliberately showing your jealousy because Chinese characters come nowhere close to simplicity and versatility of Hangul.
.
And I don't think you even know much about linguistics. You haven't used any linguistic term in your post.
.
The Korean language existed far before Hangul was invented. Hangul was not just designed for the Korean language. It was designed by King Sejong and a group of top scientists.
luv2sd 1 year ago
This has been flagged as spam show
@luv2sd For example, for Japanese language, Hangul would be a lousy writing system because Japanese language consists of single-vowel open syllables. It would be very inefficient and inconvenient to use Hangul to record Japanese. For languages with not many ending consonants, like Mandarin Chinese, Hangul is not scientific either. (part 2)
herifuzhenguan3 1 year ago
@herifuzhenguan3 ok then do you think Japanese characters or Chinese characters can be used to accurately and efficiently express English sounds? if you speak Chinese, write pronounciation symbols for this word: "refrigerator". let's see how "efficient" or "scientific" Chinese characters are.
luv2sd 1 year ago
@luv2sd God. You are really fanatic. As having said, scripts are designed for its own languages. Chinese characters are designed to record Chinese languages. it suits Chinese language very well. Similarly, Japanese kanji and kana for Japanese language. Neither Chinese characters nor Japanese kana can represent English very well. Hangul was invented to record Korean. It can amazingly record Korean languages in most cases. But it doesn't mean that it could record other languages very well. (1)
herifuzhenguan3 1 year ago
@herifuzhenguan3 I will give you one good example - English alphabets WERE NOT developed for English alone. This fact singlehandedly disproves everything you say or believe in.
Read below article and you will learn the difference between a language and linguistic characters.
The Hangeul Alphabet Moves beyond the Korean Peninsula
languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=1641
luv2sd 1 year ago

But it's totally an exaggeration to say "Hangeul is the best alphabet in the world that all languages dream of" or "It is the most scientific characters in the world".
herifuzhenguan3 1 year ago
@herifuzhenguan3 dude it's not the Koreans who said Hangul is the best. it's the western linguists who said that. watch the video again and look under the quote. you will see that the majority of the quotes were from book writers or linguistics professors from America or Europe.

ok, i have heard so often that korean is the most scientif writing o fall but why? i think that chinese and japanese is much more fascinating, hangeul is just some chinese sighn fragments, anyway it is so easy to learn (i started half a week ago and know can read everything but slowly in korean)
omoshiroidayo 2 years ago
@omoshiroidayo
With Hangul you can use 24 of it's consonants and vowels and create the same number of sounds
janetGOREton 2 years ago
@omoshiroidayo
That to me is combining art and logic into one beautiful form, more fascinating than any other writing system I have studied.
janetGOREton 2 years ago
@omoshiroidayo i totally disagree, chinese and japanese in my opinion, (IN MY OPINION) IS MORE, ..... LETS SEE, UNORGANIZED? srry it was in capsbut, anyways, all im trying to say is that korean has a mre organized and a very easy alphabet than chinese or japanese,
debbzzwashere 1 year ago
@omoshiroidayo korean letters aren't derived from the chinese letters. katakana and hiragana's shape are mostly influenced from the chinese letters... I don't see how an asian person would look at korean and say that it looks like chinese letters unless they think that a square shape ㅁ, round shape ㅇ and a ㄹ shape (that's really about it) is from china or something..

Hangul is da BAWS
Khyrid 2 years ago

In comparison, the Latin alphabet and its derivatives are used officially by dozens if not hundreds of languages.
viiietdude 2 years ago
Not to mention the fact that the Latin alphabet allows for adaptation and every language using the Latin script has assigned different sound values to each letter.
viiietdude 2 years ago
Latin ROCKS! And Arabic too. This comes 3rd and Crylic 4th.
Scoinsoffaterocks 2 years ago
@viiietdude The main reason why this happened is because korean was developed few years ago, while latin is much older. Also there are many other factors such as the Roman empire that forced latin into many countries, while korea used chinese for thousand of years before they created the korean. I'm korean and I'm proud our language is considered this way even though it is a language that comparing to latin and roots is just a newborn baby.

@vindeeze I know!, together with spanish korean is the easiest to learn, since they have only 1 sound for each letter,
icefall1793 2 years ago
Great video.
The beauty of this alphabet is its simplicity. It takes very little time to learn and with just basic vowels and consonants, thousands of syllables can be constructed. Words are spelled as they sound, and many different sounds are condensed into a small alphabet that is simple to write and read.
For those people complaining that it doesn't have some English sounds, you can say the same for English not having even half of the sounds you can make with this alphabet.
ifx1732 2 years ago
I don't like it in English when they put "e"s at the end for no reson but Spanish & languages similar to it like Italian are the EASIEST. One letter per sounds. Easy to pronounce.
Scoinsoffaterocks 2 years ago
"For no reason"?
Allow me to demonstrate. The English language has only been around since around the year 450 AD. The history of the language may be divided roughly into 3 periods, the Old English period (450 AD - 1066), the Middle English period (1066 ~ 1500) and the Modern English period (1500+). English is a language belonging to the western branch of the Germanic language family meaning it is somehow related to German and Dutch.
viiietdude 2 years ago
For example, the verb 'shave' originates in the Old English period as 'sceafan' or 'scafan'. Since there wasn't yet a fully standardised English writing, different people spelt words differently, anyway 'sceafan/scafan' was then written as 'schafen/schaven' in Middle English. At this time it was pronounced something like 'shar-fen/shar-ven'. However, between 1450 and 1750 a process known as the Great Vowel Shift took place where the pronunciation of words like 'schaven' became 'shay-ven'
viiietdude 2 years ago
Modern English is a melting pot of languages in itself. You can see words from near and far, from Germanic (oversee) to French (survey) to Latin (supervise)...
It's actually a very fascinating history. I just hope you learnt something today XD.
viiietdude 2 years ago
Here's just a rough comparison of the three stages of English:
Old: Soþlice on þam dagum wæs geworden gebod fram þam casere augusto. þæt eall ymbehwyrft wære tomearcod.
Middle: Forsoþe it is don, in þo da3is a maundement wente out fro cesar august, þat al þe world shulde ben discriued.
Modern: And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

Scoinsoffaterocks 2 years ago
Completly unrelated to my comment.
Scoinsoffaterocks 2 years ago
That doesn't have to do ANYTHING about my coments. Some 'e's are useless such as composite. And what with one? Why is it pronounced won. And the t in listen, a in Cocoa and so MANY More examples. Two to and to? why is 2 two and pronounced too instead of tuo. to isnstead of toe.
Scoinsoffaterocks 2 years ago
As I said, English has evolved throughout time and has absorbed words from all over. Much of the spelling has remained the same since hundreds of years ago.
The e in composite is because the word was borrowed from French. The number one in OE is an and ME is on. It's to do with sound change.
viiietdude 2 years ago
The number two was originally pronounced "twa", a > o and just like many other words we never bothered to change the spelling. Hence, English has one of the most irregular spelling systems in the world. Same with French.
viiietdude 2 years ago
French 2 is troi also pronounced twa.
Scoinsoffaterocks 2 years ago
No no, 2 in French is deux but pronounced 'der', 3 is trois but pronounced 'twa'.

At the end of the day, one must realise that English, like French does not use 100% phonetic writing. English is around 80-85% regular if you learn rules for it. Not even Hangeul does.
