So sick! Great soloing too, sounds very Jerry-esque. I just got into playing a few months ago and wanted to tackle this. This will prove to be a nice guide :]
Absolutely beautiful!! This is one of if not the best song by GD...and you guys played it so well. Thank you. This shows me that there are people in the world that still listen to real music and are as talented as this. Jerry would be pleased.
I'm sad to hear that - - you guys obviously enjoy each other and the magic of the songs. I'm guessing it's grateful when you do get together. Thanks for sharing these sweet performances brothers! All the best to you and yours.
Thanks for your super-kind words. You'd be pleased to know that after not seeing each other for about 2 months, we just got together and played a gig. We had a lot of fun.
Wonderful! I'm sure everyone enjoyed the vibe. IF you guys ever do want to make your way east in summertime, I'd love to put you on our humble little stage here on 50 acres of Upstate New York country :-). Thanks again for carrying the torch, shining the light in many eyes and filling hearts and ears. Peace!
Box of rain is a great suggestion. I have not really played it, but it is a wonderful tune indeed! Dave picks and arranges all of our tunes, so I can't say - but we have had several requests for it.
Thanks for your continued support of Handmade Groove. we do appreciate it very much!
Thanks for the compliment. I see that you're a DMB fan-- On the day of Jerry Garcia's death, Dave played and acoustic version of Eyes. I have a cassette of it. It was a touching tribute.
right now discover that you are the song that the mornign brings...haha... i would sing this randomly in my school hallway and people would look at me funny ;).
My God you guys are spectacular. This is one thats always brought a tear to my eye. Very much like how the dead played this in 74 with the chord change towards the end. I'm only 17 and this has always been one of my all time favorite jams. Thank you guys so much for this. Honestley sent chills through my body. Man you just nailed those Jerry licks!!!
Hey Man, You should be our PR manager with all of your kind and humbling words!! We so appreciate your support. You are right on with the time frame of the jam at the end too. Glad to see there are keen ears coming along to keep us honest!! Stay in touch.
Ok ok, we have established that you guys are BY FAR doing the best covers on you tube in my opinion, can you PLEASE do some videos like Jdarks does (LOVE YA JAY no offense) I need all the help I can get, AND when in the hell is the tour and when is the Ga. show???? Love it guys thank you again!!! Josh
Hey David & Hugh. I've been workin' on this one pretty intensively as of late, and it is going quite smoothly with the excpetion that my fellow picker doesn't seem to want to learn it; so I'm essentially learning it as a solo act. I'm having trouble with the licks you throw into the chorus mostly; any advice, and as a solo version should I even do them? I lose myself in the solo sections as well, without a back up. Should I drastically cut that down as well? Thanks, Patrick
My humble opinion...Learn the licks and try them out. If it sounds too sparse, tuck them away until you have someone to hold down the rhythm. I recently faced the same issue when I was doing a solo gig without Hugh :-(. I had to discard some leads so the song would maintain its integrity. You have to serve the song.

I recently faced the same issue when I was doing a solo gig without Hugh :-(. I had to discard some leads so the song would maintain its integrity. You have to serve the song.
Yeah, that's sort of the logic I was leaning towards. I think I might still try to fit a few licks in here and there though, especially in the chorus, where I feel like it needs that spice, or else it seems like something vital is missing. The solo will, I'm afraid, need to be salvaged though, or cut down to a little measure or two ditty of some sort. "You have to serve the song" - sounds so fundamental, but it is often left in the dust and forgotten about. Superb, humble, reminder. -thanks again
I could certainly stand to take my own advice...much easier said than done! Sometimes, less is more. Licks and leads are just so fun to play- if not to serve the song, to serve our EGOS!
if yall ever do a floyd cover on here it should be fearless if u both tune to open G the dual acoustics doin the intro theme would sound awesome. great great job on cover
I would love to see you guys in a live venue. With all that incredible jamming. The "Heads" would be twirling in the aisles. Love it. Thanks. Keep on...
i haver an interest in the scale to chord as well please send me a reply....your an awesome musician. oh yeah, i enjoyed the response to the one kid who said to guitar parts in dirt was gay.
YouTube kicked back my reply because it was "more than 500 characters." So I sent you a message to your jkilcull page. If anyone has a similar interest, visit jkilcull's YouTube page for a response.
awesome awesome jam. I'm a 16 year old who is infatuated with this dead song and I've been playing it with my friend for the longest time and developed my own style over it. But of course I'm drawn to the Jerry-esque licks that sound so perfect over these chords. I was wondering if you could post a video of you explaining some of the licks he does. I can only figure so much by ear.
Glad you like our take on Eyes!! Dave does the soloing on this so I will leave it up to him to answer you request. We appreciate your support. I am more excited to see that you "get it" and are digging the dead. It is truly timeless music. I saw them play Eyes in 74!!!
No, not that Eyes... that one is a beauty!! If I remember correctly, I saw them two nights in a row in February 74 at Winterland. One night they did a nice version of Eyes. I do remember they played a monster dark star> morning dew one of the nights. That was the stand out part of the two nights.
Very cool you dig these tunes. Lifts my spirit to see the music staying alive!
I am so humbled, thank you. My name is actually David Harris, but interestingly, I had a "Pappa Sam" Harris- My dad's dad. As for our "free for all..." one has to do SOMETHING when it all comes unravelled!!!
I first saw the Dead in '90 and was able to see them about 13 times. I never any JGB. As for Hugh, his show list is INSANE. Between 68 and '73 he saw them a gazillion times.
man, this video is -so- underrated and underwatched. you guys are gnarly. and to.. sam harris (lead guitar and vocals?) your lead is fierce as hell, and your vocals are pacifying and subdued yet striking.
There is this hammer on pull off hammer on lick you do twice in the video that I have been copying a lot :] Your lead is just nuts, i love the ad libbing.
Thanks so much for the kind words about Handmade Groove. We rarely get a shout out for our singing, more or less, our harmonies!! Careful not to feed the beast!!
Seriously - thanks so much for the support. We appreciate it very much.
Hello again dudes. Good to see you expanding your selection. Love to hear you guys do "Friend of the Devil". Keep 'em commin' fellas. All the best, from Steve.
You gave me goosebumps with this one. I heard someone cover this at hookah (i think. maybe up at nelson ledges) a few years back, but you two do it just as well, if not better. You guys oughtta go on tour with some originals--i'm certain you'd be a hit with all us dreadies...
Wow, you're amazing. Just watched Scent of A Mule which was pretty good, but now this! That is the best Dead cover I think I've ever heard. Wonderful solo, especially for being played on an acoustic. Must be a Martin or something, eh? ;-) Those Hunter lyrics are amazing no matter who sings 'em. Thought it was JG's delivery before, but guess not.
Man, the last two minutes knocked my socks off, almost Arabic sounding. It's easy to get lost in your passionate renditions. (Love China/Rider btw.) I don't own a computer myself but I'll definately check you fellas out again whenever I'm near a friends pc, or in the library. So long for now.
P.s. How about doin' a nice slow one like Box of Rain?
You guys have it. Please put some of your own songs up. If you don't have them, then get to writing! So happy to have stumbled across you two. Is that a classical guitar strung with steel strings? Love the sound.
Handmade Groove does have original tunes and we are considering putting a few up. We appreciate your response and interest. The guitar you asked about is a Martin 0016NY. More of a delta blues style guitar than anything else. Those old slot head small bodies were very popular with the Mississippi bluesmen way back when. I love the full tone and how it compliments the bigger dreadnaughts like Dave's D-35. Thanks so much for supporting Handmade Groove.
We really appreciate your kind remarks about our videos and the tunes we are playing. We should have a few more coming this week. I about fell off my chair reading the one where you were late for work!! Hope you didn't lose any money???
Really awesome stuff guys... everytime someone jams out and gets into the groove its a reminder that Jerr alone did not have a monopoly on the good stuff!

Yes ol' Jerry was the man. He got me started into the world of jamming in 1968 two years after of I started to play guitar.
