@soflo23 the british SAS are the first counter terrorism unit formed in the world. Out of 1000 applicants you may get 3 percent who pass, the american delta force of a ratio of 1000 gets 7%.
Also the british navy was first founded then the SBS, which the navy seals based their infastructure on. The British forces have also fough in more wars and conflicts than any other nation, terrain and climate. Just face it all the american bravado and tech does not make super soldiers.

So I'm a little drunk. I just got out of the US Army Infantry a year ago (E-5) I've seen quite a few british military documentaries (Queens Company, frontline etc). Always thought the british military was pretty squared away. But holy fuck, 8 months INITIAL training? That's crazy. I think we should take a page from the Royal Marines in the US Military. Even a Ranger recruit doesn't train that much.American Marines don't got shit on the royals. lol
Yes, the U.S Armed Forces have a disturbingly short training period. That's probably part of why so many dumbasses that have no place in the military can be found in the U.S Armed Forces :/.
In Sweden, it takes 15 months to become a paratrooper, and 3 years to become an officer.
@LuciusCorneliusMacro On the converse though, we do a lot of the training these guys do much earlier. I think you guys have the luxery of longer training times because your military is much smaller. Ours is huge, just our army alone adds something like 90,000 people a year.
We have to go for quality over quantity, you don't.
I did not really understand why doing some of the training earlier would make the soldier better when the total training period is shorter, please explain :).
I'll tell you a story that I find a bit funny.
My teacher told me that when he was doing military service (Conscription) as a Marine (We do not call them Marines in Sweden but it's similar) soldier they got a visit from a couple of U.S Marine officers that were there -
- to watch how we do things and see if they have anything to learn from us. And one time these U.S Officers were having a conversation with the crew of the boat they were riding in and asked how long the crew had been in the military and stuff like that. And when the crew of the boat (google Stridsbåt 90) answered that they were conscripts that only had been doing military service for a couple of months, the U.S Officers demanded that the boat would stop so that they could -
- could get off. The point of that story is that we have a more efficient training program :P.

Oh and I forgot to say this earlier: If you (the U.S) would change your training programs and stuff like that you would not have something like 90 000 people a year, because many that now are in the -
physical fitness test (annual) From the looks of it, the Swedish army version calls for a max of 28 push ups, 60 sit ups a 2000m shuttle run and a short swim.
2,000 meters is 1.2 miles.
The US army PFT calls for 77 push ups 82 sit ups and a 2 mile run.
the US Marine PFT is 20 pull ups 100 sit ups and a 3 mile run.
US ranger PFT is identical to the USMC PFT except has a 5 mile run.
You must have been looking at the Homeguards physical tests or something because non of what you said about the Swedish Army is true. The Swedish Fallskärmsjägarna annual test is doing the Örnmarchen (Eagle March), that is speed marching (running/Jogging) 20 Kilometers with a backpack with full combat gear and all the other stuff that a Swedish Falskärmsjägare have to carry (over 30KG), then 60-70 Km of regular marching, still with all that weight, then 10km of -
Map orientation (without the backpack but with combat gear) and then a shooting test. All of this has to be done under 24 hours. I forgot to mention that the speed march has to be done in under 2 hours and 20 minutes.
Please, do not make this to a "Who is better" discussion because none of us can win. The Swedish Armed Forces is very different from the U.S Armed Forces, but both of them are good at what they do.

Royal Marines are the closest thing to special forces you can be without actually been special forces. clue is in the word COMMANDO. To even compare the the two shows you have know knowledge at all on the subject. US marines are on the level of British infantry. So I'm a little drunk. I just got out of the US Army Infantry a year ago (E-5) I've seen quite a few british military documentaries (Queens Company, frontline etc). Always thought the british military was pretty squared away. But holy fuck, 8 months INITIAL training? That's crazy. I think we should take a page from the Royal Marines in the US Military. Even a Ranger recruit doesn't train that much.American Marines don't got shit on the royals. lol

Yes, the U.S Armed Forces have a disturbingly short training period. That's probably part of why so many dumbasses that have no place in the military can be found in the U.S Armed Forces :/.
In Sweden, it takes 15 months to become a paratrooper, and 3 years to become an officer.
Quite a contrast.

physical fitness test (annual) From the looks of it, the Swedish army version calls for a max of 28 push ups, 60 sit ups a 2000m shuttle run and a short swim.
2,000 meters is 1.2 miles.
The US army PFT calls for 77 push ups 82 sit ups and a 2 mile run.
the US Marine PFT is 20 pull ups 100 sit ups and a 3 mile run.
US ranger PFT is identical to the USMC PFT except has a 5 mile run.

The Swedish Fallskärmsjägarna annual test is doing the Örnmarchen (Eagle March), that is speed marching (running/Jogging) 20 Kilometers with a backpack with full combat gear and all the other stuff that a Swedish Falskärmsjägare have to carry (over 30KG), then 60-70 Km of regular marching, still with all that weight, then 10km of -
