I just realized how incredibly similar this battle is to the siege of Vienna in the late 1600s. A MASSIVE Turkish force besieged the Austrian city of Vienna, then the Holy Roman Empire. Heavily outnumbered, the defenders could not last long, until the Polish King, John III Sobieski showed up commanding a force of 40,000 cavalry. Then in perhaps the largest cavalry charge in human history, he led a charge into the Ottomans utterly crushing them and driving them out of Europe. Epic as fuck.

I have to agree. Bernard Hill was the best actor and character in the trilogy, and this speech was pretty epic - though I think the one in th radio version is better performed, it doesn't have the visuals.

The only thing that ruins it for me is when the orc says 'fire!'. You don't fire arrows! You shoot them! They are not firearms! Gargh... I know, dorky, but anyone who does archery should know that, and they had plenty of technical advisors who should have spotted it.

Oh and, the French Lancers and Cuirassiers are NOTHING compared to the Rohirrim! The greatest cavalry of all time fiction or not haha Lets not forget, in the book, the 6,000 Rohirrim also had to drive off an 18,000 strong Haradrim 'Black Serpent' Cavalry force of lancers etc Theoden killed their leader in combat.

@dragonkarol : Gondor's army is much larger than Rohans normally but you have to keep in mind that Gondor has been fighting the army's of Mordor for nearly 3000 years and they've also been fighting the current army (which is estimated to be about 600,000 orcs) for a full day and night And they also lost the outer defenses of the city which had a pretty sizable garrison. (I do believe that i am ranting......)
