  • I have recently started giving lessons for beginners piano by tutoring music theory and these video are fantastic. I'm so grateful you're actually teaching a trick on the spot, as opposed to "Look at how awesome I am at playing piano you can be too if you click this link and buy..."blah blah blah. You are epic because you know what you're doing, you seem excited to share and you can share because you're limitless, you know. As songwriting enthusiast...how cool and inspiring!

  • Wow is it this easy? I really want to play

  • Cool song.

  • I really like these lessons, and I will be following up with your classes.

  • Great Stuff!!!!! Keep it up

  • nice!

  • extraordinariamente fabuloso

  • David, New to the site, however i love to hear jazz, your style of playing is "humbling

soothing" and most of all "captivading"

  • A very insightful way of presenting the ideas. Thanks!!! I will refer myself to all your other posts as I keep on studying whatever ideas you will present here. I am particularly interested in studying jazz/blues progressions. If you have cd's available or online something. i'd appreciate the information. Many thanks!

  • Incredible !!!!

  • damn it my hands are so damn small l can barely reach an octave...

  • I must have very small hands. That chord with the left hand at 4:04 is very hard for me. I can hardly cover ten keys with one hand...

  • you've got the right stuff.

  • Thank you David for these videos online...I'm really grateful for them. I always wanted to learn some tricks of jazz piano. I never could get chance though. Thank you indeed!

  • Hi David,

i have been playing piano since age 10 & i am now 44, As the old saying goes " you learn something new everyday. love the easy way you demo how to play chords a 5th or 2nd from root, awsome, i will be using these kind of voicings a lot more.

    great work, i love it.

  • I have been researching online piano lessons for a while, and these are about the best I have seen. I will probably use this one a lot more if not exclusively!!!!

  • The song you play during the intro is absolutely awesome. I like it a lot.

  • Your music keeps reminding me of Michael Sembello. Love it!

  • could you give a tutorial in D on how to play praise and worship songs

  • This is brilliant. I am teaching myself to play piano by looking at videos on youtube, and this video really opens up a new level of playing for me.

    Thank you.

  • Hey David ! I am really excited that I have found your stuff. I have played piano on and off for 14 years teaching myself and I always hated the tedious work in reading music and memorizing it. I never felt like i was learning to express myself. I watch all these piano players riffing and always wondered how. I now will look into this method with rhythmic patterns to finally be able to express myself musically the way i want to be able too! Thank you sooooo much!

    Peter Steele

  • ur great musician

  • very nice technique

  • You are great. Thanks so much. I'm kinda self taught and have trouble getting substitute chords. Like how you played a different chord instead of the Em chord (2:43) you played a different chord. Help me understand this. Thanks

  • This is great stuff and comprehendable.

  • what does the number on the chord sheet mean ?

    for example, c2? or a2?

  • Hi David. I am Prasad from India. I have been trained in Indian classical music for over 15 years. My deepest desire is to learn Piano which I have not been able to fulfil so far due to several factors. But I love coming here and listening to you play the Piano. You sound like God to me!

  • Thank you for the lessons!

  • Hi David,

I enjoyed this lesson and i'd like to know more, about the entire course playing piano by ear !

  • Hello David, I am so happy I discovered these lessons - I knew my new year would start well!!!

I like the open/phat chords you share here... I like the articulation, the voice, the harmonic progressions - it is great!

One question - we are talking about open Dominant 7/9th chords, right, why do we call them 'Major 7th?' major seventh chords have major sevenths - am i wrong?

  • Hi Thisyr4la - Thanks for your kind words. Regarding the 7th - this lesson deals with the M7 (not the lowered Dom 7). An interesting note is that if the 7th is from the major scale (M7th interval) and the 9th is present, the chord can be called a M or a M7/9 chord. Happy New Year!

  • Great Job David@thisyr4la

  • Is this lesson on your Play Piano course? Because I have that course but don't remember this lesson

  • Hello Suzemet - This lessons isn't part of "Pattern Piano and Keyboard" (the original course). However, it is one of the advanced Piano Lessons in the Complete Bundle. Best wishes - David Sprunger

  • dude, ur more than incredible...(in the good way :p

  • This sounds so smooth! thank you!

  • this is a very interesting method of learning piano voicing...thanks a lot!

  • Good stuff. Is it a good idea to harmonize every melody notes in the song using M9 voicing, like the one David did in video one? And another question, if the note I'm trying to harmonize is an "E", it is best that I use the "E chord" to harmonize it right? I mean all I got is the melody and the lyrics. Please help.

  • Well that depends on what scale you're playing on. Harmonizing the E note on a C Major scale for example, you could use C, Em, or Am, as all have the E note as a triad. Then maybe you can use CM9, Em9, or Am9. Of course this is just a general guideline, and I only mention diatonic triads, so feel free to explore yourself!

  • You play well, teach well, compose well.

30 years ago I hit the piano, just woken up at random 6 notes: C#EABEG#, have you got any Books ?

  • Awesome....and very helpful.......need more of these....

  • Thanks! Man!

    You are GREAT Teacher!!!

  • you make this easy to grasp. i don't have to wish i could anymore!!!

  • i have been searching how to make what you call phat chords. i believe after just one view that i can see some of the basic trisks i have not been able to quite figure out how to get to. i will be back to look for your site and learn more .God bless!!

  • Look at phat chord voicings chapter 1 (here on youtube). A lot more helpful than this video alone :)

  • Thank You David,

You have an amazingly smooth flow. Great Video!

  • Hello Sprunger. Though i'm not a pro but just an amateur, I would say that this is fabulous. The sounds are like water flowing from a cascade. I wish I would play like this!! Oh some day I would be!! Thanks a lot for sharing this.

  • Thanks for these lessons they are awsome!!

  • Before I don't know much what is the practical use of Lydian Mode. After transposing this video to Key of F, it became apparent. Also, the upper run G,A,C,D,E (after transposing it to Key of F) makes me appreciate more the pentatonic scale.

  • OUTSTANDING!!!

  • Well, i really admire your voicings lesson, its so inspirative, more good things comes to you sir...

i wish the best for you...

  • i really like the chords and how simple u made it for me

thanks ..... keep on the good work

  • David. Well done.

Clear and concise. Have been looking for 2 months to get training - on line, tutor - everywhere. With DVD's we can go over and over them again. I am musically sensitive and this does a great job.

OK, then, do you explain WHY you use the chords and where to put them. Do you explain HOW to attain great technique - such as how to do those rapid arpeggios and chromatics and HOW to study to get it into our heads?

    So, far so good.

    David F

  • I'm a old southern gospel/church pianist,

  • Hi Mr. David Sprunger. I'm from the Philippines.Your such a great teacher! I play the piano but I really can't play jazz. • Thanks - that's very kind! Have a great weekend - David Sprunger

  • Some people know how to play, but are poor teachers. A bunch of others are very good talkers only. David Sprunger is to my knowledge, one of the few with such combined charisma to melt even the hardest lesson through the cracks of our unyielding brains without us even feeling it. So give it up to him, seriously!

  • Man! What can I say - those are really kind words. Thanks, you made my day for sure. Best wishes - David Sprunger

  • Hi lwyo - Thanks for your comments. A Maj 9 chord is a major triad with the addition of a Major 7th and a 9th. The Major 7th is where the "Maj" part of the Maj9 designation comes from. Best wishes - David Sprunger
