  • I find it ironic that Marty's theory about playing too much straight through up and down almost describes what most of Paul's playing is.

  • Nothing against Paul but to watch both of them improvise, you'd never guess that paul was the more "shred" oriented player.

  • il volume della chitarra di marty è più alto perchè ha un suono analogico.. mentre paul con i pedali ha un suono digitale

  • is it me or does marty seem to have lsd eyes in this vid?

  • i know they are just effing around, but I wish they would record from 6:30 on...please make a cd together, too amazing.

  • @xxtothe5 they could call themselves Mr. 'Deth

  • おおっ、マーティー英語上手だな!

  • I love how Friedman throws in the lick he learned from Gilbert earlier into the jam session around 8:46

  • Ma che cazzo di scarpe indossa Friedman?!!

  • \m/

  • He is great teacher. My todays playing is good because of him. Learn the scale make your patterns, licks whatever. Make your scales or change already learnd scale. And after when you do all that bunch of stuff you will have so much ideas that you will dont know where to put them. And whats the best thing you will not sound like Marty you will have something more, something you like more your own style of playing. And that is why this guy is amazing teacher.

  • fuck, the first thing marty talked about has been in my mind for about a year.

  • Am I the only one who feels like giggling every time he says 'box'? ^^

  • i don`t think he`s underrated.. who would underrated such a talent like Marty ?

  • Marty wears sucky shoes -.- but it dont afect hes playing :)

  • LOL@ 3.34 What's Marty doing?

  • hippie sound!!! :D ahahahaha!

  • It sounds like a sped-up version of Ted Nugent's Great White Buffalo 6:39. Paul's even using a hollow body like Ted.

  • @DarkendSun That's exactly what it is.

  • The way he refers to hippie music is just... heh.

  • Those notes in the beginning are out of pentatonic minor scale but not random notes. They are coming from A major pentatonic or A major scale (F# minor scale). They are in the same key.

  • i want martys guitar

  • @loonguy23 I was going to order an Ibanez SZ about a year ago, but it was discontinued, even though the site said they had it in stock. That was a disappointing month.

  • @loonguy23 i want marty's fingers!

  • What nice

  • I don't like Marty because he goes too far out of the fray. Keys were set up because they are pleasing to the ears. If you really don't want to stay in that, stick with a blues scale. You don't have to go and use Chromaticism for EVERYTHING.

  • @Chaz6993X If you know how to make those halfnotes sound interesting, without making it sound bad, then there's nothing wrong about it. His style is based on what he just showed - the whole "exotic" thing going on over at Marty's. If you don't like it because you think it's theoretically wrong, then that's just one sad head on top of your body.

  • 8:30 : Paul: hey marty -.- look what those fingers are doing woooow

haha he looks like a little child

  • ya cant even turn to marty for shred lessens anymore, now he is even teaching blues. I just cant get into it anymore, it's so out-dated and has pretty much been so since the fall of zeppelin. No matter how much they turbo charge it with new ideas (if thats even possible anymore) it still just sounds like the blues, too mundane & down to earth. ya just cant picture Dragons, Wizards and Unicorns.

  • @Voitcu dude if you've been pay the slightest attention to what marty was teaching you'd know that his point was to not stay within the basic blues scale and its up to you how your gonna play it if you don't want that bluesy sound

  • @arcadia09 yep, some people just don't get it, do they?

  • Comment removed

  • @Voitcu sounds like its a personal problem.... marty rules

  • @Voitcu If blues is "out-date" then so is shred so I have no idea what your on about.

  • thumbs up if ur hungry and want an electric guitar T_T

  • marty friedman is one of the most creative players that i'be heard..

  • Jason Becker and Marty seem to be underrated and under appreciated. They have crazy unique styles. Whether neo classical or blues-rock.

  • Thumb Ups For Weird Stuff xD

  • Check out Marty's shoes @ 6:30

  • so hippie music isnt interesting, so marty haha

  • can you say match made in hevan this is 2 top musicians shredding the way it should be they should just tour and jam around the world

  • dam look at those shoes marty is wearing and gilbert has so many pedals and effects its crazy. lol good lesson and pretty awesome jam session

  • Marty's bridge hand cam doesn't help at all. Sheeesh, his playing style is so wierd I can't even follow it with my eyes. Let alone with my fingers.

  • All notes are equal, but some are more equal than others.

  • Wonderful video only problem is... Marty's clothes. Look at 7:29 instant WTF moment for me

  • I don't like the guitar sound of Marty... he is too loud, too heavy and less precise than Paul.

  • @dimitrifabien I don't like Paul's tone. It's too sharp.

  • @mingebag851 you should hear his new album Fuzz Universe, he has a different tone...no more "sharpness"

  • it is mostly a self taught thing yes..many teachers * unfortunately* forget that scales are guides not absolutes...if you listen to jazz fusion players sometimes they just ruthlessly get out of the scale*sometimes even the whole key* and break free...i think marty just applied that idea here.... *if it sounds cool IT IS* a very important musical concept that every GOOD teacher knows

  • wow, my playing style is very similar to martys style of playing with different notes outside of the scales, i thought i was just not note savvy playing that way but it turns out, many others do that the same way. must be a self taught thing?

  • he talks with expression and emphasis but he eyes scream "Im A STONER!!!!" kickass guitar player though big fan of all his work Paul gilbert too

  • sin ofender al gran talento de friedman pero chistoso los tacones jejejeje

  • is marty saying bach or box?

  • hippie sound.lol!

  • Comment removed

  • Haha, I think (but I'm not sure), that Marty threw in some of the lick he had just learned from Paul on video 1 of this series at about 7:03.

That's amazing that he is able to instantly apply a lick like that into his playing.

  • Marty: "All notes are cool"

  • @kulto1986

haha i just noticed that too LOL

  • God damn, Marty's picking hand looks awful. Damn good player though.

  • @f0xo9 he upstrokes more than down, which is unusual.

  • @SantomPh from the down the neck point of view it looks like he's just hitting the strings with the pick lol

  • Holy fuuuuck!!! 6:40 that jam kills!

  • The best Lineup ever?

  • the less notes you have in a scale the more freedom you have to improvise

  • before i got a little better at playing guitar, i remember all i knew were the damn box scales. I was just getting into his stuff, so I looked at a couple of Marty's solos and i remember thinking "where the hell did THESE notes come from?" I love his style! He's like metal Eric Johnson.

  • I remember Dave saying "I like Marty -- he's a cool guy -- a little weird, though." Yeah... he IS pretty damn weird. :P

  • @bstock, marty friedman has infinite theory knowledge. I know he doesn't gloat about it, and it's not as obvious as Becker, (he's a genius), but seriously, Friedman is a freakin' genius too.

  • it kinda gives you that hippy sound. ya know, which is cool if you like hippy music, but...

  • marty is a great guitarist.. but honestly i think he lacks of a lot of knowledge in theory. I mean obviously over the years hes developed new scales and talent approaches... but like in one of his videos where he says he "made up this scale" its basically just the phrygian dominant and mixolydian b6

  • @Bstock23 Yeah, but maybe he didn't know that he was actually playing those scales. I do that a lot too, where I just jam over a scale and I find myself playing the normal church modes of the key, like Ionian, and I realize that I was playing a normal scale. I think Marty uses a lot of freedom and what sounds good to him is what he uses. He's not a technical and theory-based as some musicians.

  • @Bstock23

i noticed that too,but i think hes just bullshitting a wee bit,he definitely knows a hell of a lot about music theory, wayy more than he implies.that way he appears more god like and magical,he is amazing but he sure as hell didnt invent that or any other scale.i think he doesnt really follow any strict guidelines to what is "supposed" to fit over what !!!

  • @Bstock23 he knows a lot of theory. Jason Becker actually joined Cacophony to learn from him, and Dave Mustaine claimed to "bend over backwards" to accomodate Marty's Eastern and Egyptian scales. However, he also makes up hybrid scales when playing, as he always thinks chromatic rather than diatonic, as a jazzer would, or a Japanese koto player. "All notes are cool" he says. Even Dimebag said that "if you bend a wrong note enough it'll sound half right".

  • yes this is baaddass

  • He's the fucking man...i mean...this man here xD hahahahaha YEAH!

  • marty is awesome with his unique scales

  • I am, in no way bashing Paul Gilbert, but his tone is way too trebley.

  • At 6:32, those Riffs sound like Ted Nugent's The Great White Buffalo. Pure gold right there man.

  • the exact same riffs dude, only, the solo's are over the verses

  • @9erMatthew right on, sounds amazing

  • @diamonddust22 It is Great White Buffalo!

  • @gluggheim classic riffage

  • @diamonddust22 Yep, this kicked my ass today!

  • marty is so talented.. haha its just funny because he has huge star inlays

  • @Bstock23 If you say so

  • @osiris8605 yeah he says so.

  • @Bstock23 it is funny, I love Marty

  • is marty holding the pick sideways??

  • At an angle yes

  • @razorslice17 Marty has a really unique playing style.

  • rofl at marty's shoes

  • it's japan nobody cares! ^^

  • @PlasticCoatedCheese Marty shoes are awesome. Damn cool

  • marty's solo sound jazzy which i think is cool...

  • marty kick ass

  • LOL "so basically, all notes are cool"

  • Or rather, they're accidentals used as grace notes to give the melody more depth. It's not a matter of using all notes, it's a matter of knowing what fits the chord progression, and what fits the run you're doing, as well as what fits the emotion of the song you're playing. If you just start throwing out all 12 notes everywhere, you're going to sound like you're playing 12 tone guitarwank.

  • hahaha hippie music

  • lol hippie music

  • he holds the pick strangely...

  • @Juanjose534 thats what she said :P

  • look at Martys eyes, they dont move.

  • i think paul is much bettser as marty and he have much better licks than marty but marty is awesome too

  • And I thought he would slow down on the second take -_-

  • i think marty friedman is an underrated guitarist : his licks an musical approach are unique and amazing

  • @LedSlash71 - honestly, only retards would under rate him. Marty Friedman is one of the greatest guitar players in the world, and so is Paul Gilbert

  • @LedSlash71 you#re such an bozo

  • @LedSlash71 yes its because he was limited in megadeth but with jason becker b4 then and after he proves he is a top shredder

  • @LedSlash71 not underRATED just not known cause he just plays in japan

  • @KhammettJpageAsmith accurate, do not think it understated, just the fact of not being a very orthodox, metal-head and also the fact of living in Japan and making music for commercials

  • @LedSlash71 underrated only from stupid kids !

  • hippie music... hahaha

  • i love the fact that he uses his pinky seldom.!!...:D

  • i wonder how much jazz marty listened to play i can hear jazz type runs in his playing

  • Marty loves Elvis.

  • "All notes are cool" Friedman Genius!

  • Marty says "Like" too much xD xD xD I do it also xD

  • basically all notes are cool

  • I love Martys way of teaching. very unconventional

  • all notes are cool. LMAO

he and paul fucking get down though

  • ROFL!!! "Makes it sound very hippie style, wich is cool if u like hippie music!" LMFAO

  • I think Friedman was bored with the common progressions of his time, or he wouldn't harp on accidental tones so much

  • holy shit :O the jamming session makes me want them to be in a band together!

who else would love to see that? :D

  • i've been saying that ever since I saw these videos

  • he had that same outlook in rust in peace

  • I like Marty's whole outlook on music. "Any note can be cool." I'd say it a little differently.. but I like where he's coming from.

  • does marty only pick downstrokes?

  • they say he's an "outside picker" and I can follow that. He does alot of downpicks but changing direction of strings he does upstrokes.

  • marty picks so weird

  • he picks all upside down its wierd. i bet he cant pick very fast because of that

  • Go look up vids of Marty Friedman in Cacophony. He can indeed pick very fast with his hand like that. It's because he's not straining it. When you see a guy/girl with a wierd picking hand technique, and they are straining, that's not good in the long run, because it's easier to injure yourself that way, and would not allow small hand movements to "calmly" play at a certain speed. I'm sure Marty is comfortable with his picking hand, and can play in and out of tempo, a technique called Rubato. :D

  • What's that?

  • What's what?

  • Rubato.

  • Rubato, translated, literally means "Robbed Time". Applying this musically, it is a way to add musical character and more emotion to a piece by slowing down and speeding up a choice of notes at certain points in a song in a tasteful manner. George Lynch and Marty Friedman do this alot.

  • saw a video on demand where he explains the same thing, and the reporter guy kept referring to "getting back to home base after being in a new neighborhood"

  • hahaha marty gave the same lesson 3 times pretty much xD

    love him tho

  • lol @ 1:12 , reminds me of writing with this dude I know who asked "would it help if I sang in the same key as the instruments?" xD

  • anyone notice how marty when playing rhythm picks "normally" then soon as he switches to lead he does his funky picking, strange hey

  • I love marty. The dude is saying be inventive and think outside the box, the "scale box" in this case. you dont need to be strictly faithful to scales in order to do some awesome solos. variety boys and girls, variety.

like the idea of breaking down the blues scale and turn it into a rock solo and if you like the hippy sound stick to the scale otherwise branch the fuck out XD epic.

  • Haha Marty's great, my fave player but damn he's hilarious too. Also pretty awesome jam towards the end. And as for what everyone's been quoting, 1:12 and 3:00 is where you'll find them.

  • Anyone know a good dvd for licks for beginners?

  • hi!im italian and i can say: GIACOMO CASTELLANO LEAD GUITAR!

    find it!bye

  • Paul's licks in this one are awesome for begginers

  • does anyone elso notice marty's shoes?

  • LOL I didn't notice until I rewatched it.

  • all notes are cool :)

  • i would love to see a dual guitar solo session like this with marty friedman and chris poland, that would be the best duo ever

  • it just like having a conversation they play

  • excercise 5 is mmmm nice

  • Is it just me or does he play with an unusual picking style?

  • he favours upstrokes apparently

  • That's a bit of a disadvantage when you're playing with Megadeth. =P

  • Dave Mustaine uses upstrokes in his riffs all the time. He would downstroke them to give them that consistent hard attack, then upstroke certain chords to give them an accent. He has a variety of chordal techniques like that. You'd be hard-pressed to play in his style of "spider-riffing" with just downstrokes. It's a combination of both.(Alternate picking I mean.)

And he was in Megadeth for nearly ten years, I would hardly call that a disadvantage.

  • Nah, man. I wasn't saying playing in Megadeth is a disadvantage I was just saying favouring upstrokes and playing in Megadeth would feel uncomfortable due to the typical speedy downstroke chugging. But now that I think about it, for a thrash band Megadeth don't have many songs like that other than, say, Tornado Of Souls or something. Which is obviously because Dave likes to keep things more interesting than a chugga-chugga on an open E with a few power chords thrown in between.

  • I got what you mean, that playing Megadeth-style riffing would be hard due to alot of downstrokes while Marty favors upstrokes. Repeated what you said ,wasting my comment space lol.

And you're right, that's exactly why. His riffing is equally as wierd as Marty's exotic soloing style. Really cool. At first, it doesn't seem like they'd be a good match, with Marty at that time a speed-metal virtuoso in Cacophony, and with exotic New Age solo records, while Dave has always been Dave, but it's good.

  • also using the as he says "upside-down chords) cause u can hear the chords better and not having the lower tones dominate the chords. (like the pre-chorus and chorus of Symphony of Destruction.) but then again, mixing both up and downs. and in the end it sounds awsome

  • That's true, that's also why he does it. :D

He says it gives the riffs more air, and I have to agree. Megadeth is the leader on how to make interesting thrash riffs.

  • He plays with an unusual picking style that is completely amazing

  • yeah zakk wylde plays like that too if youve noticed

  • "Which is cool , If you like hippy music"

  • Whoa! The Sweaty Teddy cover on "Great White Buffalo" was smoking!

  • awesome!!!! thats y i luv this guy!!! i think hes the best in the world..

  • what the fuck possessed marty to wear those gay fucking shoes

  • fallenangels999

Paul Gilbert is like 11 feet tall so Marty wore some platform shoes.

  • btw, can anyone make up what shirt is he wearing? who is that?

  • elvis presley

  • lol did u think it was hitler the first time u saw it? i was freaked out for a second

  • Elvis man! fucking King Elvis XD

  • all hail the sage!

  • basically, all notes are cool.

    Sage

  • every little pattern has like...its own little trip, you know... like its own little journey
