He is great teacher. My todays playing is good because of him. Learn the scale make your patterns, licks whatever. Make your scales or change already learnd scale. And after when you do all that bunch of stuff you will have so much ideas that you will dont know where to put them. And whats the best thing you will not sound like Marty you will have something more, something you like more your own style of playing. And that is why this guy is amazing teacher.
Those notes in the beginning are out of pentatonic minor scale but not random notes. They are coming from A major pentatonic or A major scale (F# minor scale). They are in the same key.
@loonguy23 I was going to order an Ibanez SZ about a year ago, but it was discontinued, even though the site said they had it in stock. That was a disappointing month.
I don't like Marty because he goes too far out of the fray. Keys were set up because they are pleasing to the ears. If you really don't want to stay in that, stick with a blues scale. You don't have to go and use Chromaticism for EVERYTHING.
@Chaz6993X If you know how to make those halfnotes sound interesting, without making it sound bad, then there's nothing wrong about it. His style is based on what he just showed - the whole "exotic" thing going on over at Marty's. If you don't like it because you think it's theoretically wrong, then that's just one sad head on top of your body.
ya cant even turn to marty for shred lessens anymore, now he is even teaching blues. I just cant get into it anymore, it's so out-dated and has pretty much been so since the fall of zeppelin. No matter how much they turbo charge it with new ideas (if thats even possible anymore) it still just sounds like the blues, too mundane & down to earth. ya just cant picture Dragons, Wizards and Unicorns.
@Voitcu dude if you've been pay the slightest attention to what marty was teaching you'd know that his point was to not stay within the basic blues scale and its up to you how your gonna play it if you don't want that bluesy sound
it is mostly a self taught thing yes..many teachers * unfortunately* forget that scales are guides not absolutes...if you listen to jazz fusion players sometimes they just ruthlessly get out of the scale*sometimes even the whole key* and break free...i think marty just applied that idea here.... *if it sounds cool IT IS* a very important musical concept that every GOOD teacher knows
wow, my playing style is very similar to martys style of playing with different notes outside of the scales, i thought i was just not note savvy playing that way but it turns out, many others do that the same way. must be a self taught thing?
before i got a little better at playing guitar, i remember all i knew were the damn box scales. I was just getting into his stuff, so I looked at a couple of Marty's solos and i remember thinking "where the hell did THESE notes come from?" I love his style! He's like metal Eric Johnson.
@bstock, marty friedman has infinite theory knowledge. I know he doesn't gloat about it, and it's not as obvious as Becker, (he's a genius), but seriously, Friedman is a freakin' genius too.
marty is a great guitarist.. but honestly i think he lacks of a lot of knowledge in theory. I mean obviously over the years hes developed new scales and talent approaches... but like in one of his videos where he says he "made up this scale" its basically just the phrygian dominant and mixolydian b6
@Bstock23 Yeah, but maybe he didn't know that he was actually playing those scales. I do that a lot too, where I just jam over a scale and I find myself playing the normal church modes of the key, like Ionian, and I realize that I was playing a normal scale. I think Marty uses a lot of freedom and what sounds good to him is what he uses. He's not a technical and theory-based as some musicians.
i noticed that too,but i think hes just bullshitting a wee bit,he definitely knows a hell of a lot about music theory, wayy more than he implies.that way he appears more god like and magical,he is amazing but he sure as hell didnt invent that or any other scale.i think he doesnt really follow any strict guidelines to what is "supposed" to fit over what !!!
@Bstock23 he knows a lot of theory. Jason Becker actually joined Cacophony to learn from him, and Dave Mustaine claimed to "bend over backwards" to accomodate Marty's Eastern and Egyptian scales. However, he also makes up hybrid scales when playing, as he always thinks chromatic rather than diatonic, as a jazzer would, or a Japanese koto player. "All notes are cool" he says. Even Dimebag said that "if you bend a wrong note enough it'll sound half right".
Or rather, they're accidentals used as grace notes to give the melody more depth. It's not a matter of using all notes, it's a matter of knowing what fits the chord progression, and what fits the run you're doing, as well as what fits the emotion of the song you're playing. If you just start throwing out all 12 notes everywhere, you're going to sound like you're playing 12 tone guitarwank.
@KhammettJpageAsmith accurate, do not think it understated, just the fact of not being a very orthodox, metal-head and also the fact of living in Japan and making music for commercials
Go look up vids of Marty Friedman in Cacophony. He can indeed pick very fast with his hand like that. It's because he's not straining it. When you see a guy/girl with a wierd picking hand technique, and they are straining, that's not good in the long run, because it's easier to injure yourself that way, and would not allow small hand movements to "calmly" play at a certain speed. I'm sure Marty is comfortable with his picking hand, and can play in and out of tempo, a technique called Rubato. :D
Rubato, translated, literally means "Robbed Time". Applying this musically, it is a way to add musical character and more emotion to a piece by slowing down and speeding up a choice of notes at certain points in a song in a tasteful manner. George Lynch and Marty Friedman do this alot.
saw a video on demand where he explains the same thing, and the reporter guy kept referring to "getting back to home base after being in a new neighborhood"
I love marty. The dude is saying be inventive and think outside the box, the "scale box" in this case. you dont need to be strictly faithful to scales in order to do some awesome solos. variety boys and girls, variety.
like the idea of breaking down the blues scale and turn it into a rock solo and if you like the hippy sound stick to the scale otherwise branch the fuck out XD epic.
Haha Marty's great, my fave player but damn he's hilarious too. Also pretty awesome jam towards the end. And as for what everyone's been quoting, 1:12 and 3:00 is where you'll find them.
Dave Mustaine uses upstrokes in his riffs all the time. He would downstroke them to give them that consistent hard attack, then upstroke certain chords to give them an accent. He has a variety of chordal techniques like that. You'd be hard-pressed to play in his style of "spider-riffing" with just downstrokes. It's a combination of both.(Alternate picking I mean.)
And he was in Megadeth for nearly ten years, I would hardly call that a disadvantage.
Nah, man. I wasn't saying playing in Megadeth is a disadvantage I was just saying favouring upstrokes and playing in Megadeth would feel uncomfortable due to the typical speedy downstroke chugging. But now that I think about it, for a thrash band Megadeth don't have many songs like that other than, say, Tornado Of Souls or something. Which is obviously because Dave likes to keep things more interesting than a chugga-chugga on an open E with a few power chords thrown in between.
I got what you mean, that playing Megadeth-style riffing would be hard due to alot of downstrokes while Marty favors upstrokes. Repeated what you said ,wasting my comment space lol.
And you're right, that's exactly why. His riffing is equally as wierd as Marty's exotic soloing style. Really cool. At first, it doesn't seem like they'd be a good match, with Marty at that time a speed-metal virtuoso in Cacophony, and with exotic New Age solo records, while Dave has always been Dave, but it's good.

I find it ironic that Marty's theory about playing too much straight through up and down almost describes what most of Paul's playing is.
