  • One of my favorite songs to play.

  • My ex-girlfriend from Hong Kong tried to translate the Chinese words but found them to be nonsense verse. She decided it could mean: "Me made special brownies. So good, So good. Try them, you like. Some more, Some more. Make you high as a kite".

She always was good for a laugh!

  • like this song but i still prefer china doll/fay goodman s version....

  • Beautiful video. Brings this song to life.

  • Brilliant!!!!!

  • I remember rolling in the not-yet-cut hay with my honey. But I said "ON A SNOW WHITE CLOUD" (not kite) ... she responded to that :)

  • is this clip originaly ?

  • @dadoo1617 i think this comes from BBC TV Programme Golden Oldie Picture show where songs were ' given ' new videos .

  • I heard this twice on the radio in the late 1960s as a teenager, and recognised it as memorable. More than 40 years later I can confirm that it is a great song.

  • @morris3245 I heartily concur.

  • I don't think I appreciated this record the first time round, but I was very young. First time I've heard it for years and it sounds fantastic still fresh and magical.

  • such a great song, never heard it but lately the local golden oldies station is playing it a lot, it's got a great feel

  • i love this song!

  • this song still evokes the most wonderfull of memories and is forever one of my all time favourites

  • This song sounds like something that would be played when the world's ending...

  • I was 3 when this came out. I saw it on The Golden Oldie Picture Show in the 80s and loved it ever since...x

  • A typical offshore radio record...

It brings back so much memories..

    hnx!

  • this film clip is filmed in a place in Pool , in Dorset , England, called Compton Acres, its a beutifull Japanese set out garden, well worth a visit if any one in the area,. this film clip come from an earlie 80,s show, called the Golden Oldie Picture Show, presented by DLT

  • I last heard this song years ago. Yesterday though this tune just leapt into my mind from nowhere, and I just had to find out what it was.

  • This is one beautiful song. The band did'nt like it

simply because it was'nt the type of music they

wanted to play. I have loved this song ever since

it charted in 1967 ( i was seven years old ).

Can anyone translate what the woman is saying or is she just doing her shopping list?

    ;-)

  • @Psych0biker The video makes us think it might be Japanese, but I can't figure it out. I found a reference to this on the internet (this site refuses to let me send the link). It says that the words were written by a local Chinese restauranteur, spoken by Jacqui with the help of her grandmother, but some Chinese asked to transcribe it from the record couldn't fathom it out. Nice, though...

  • @wldbwriter The video is Japan based with Japanese kites, costumes and Japanese writing but the asian words included in the song are in Mandarin and mean lots of sweet nothings.

  • Another American setting chase after an innocent Chinese or are they after the Japanese these days?

  • @lkfh Every image is (very) Japanese. The group were British... and the Americans are done with Japan - it's China now.

  • FABULOUS!!!:)

  • Gentle giant were fine!

  • Simon Dupree was to become Gentle Giant. Gentle Giant is not entertainment music like this one, it's extremely complicated progressive rock and Derek (Dupree frontman) called this particular piece later "utter shit". But that's of course from the perspective of a true musician and not from a 'Joe Blow' consumer. I for one have to agree.

  • I was 12 when this was released, and I thought it was a fucking awesome song then. The years have done nothing to diminish this. Sheer class.

  • My whole being turns cold with shivers whenever I hear this song. It's just too beautiful.

  • This song is so beautiful makes my heart ache thinking about my beloved that passed

  • anyone can write what says the girl during the song?

  • The lady in the video is so beautiful.

  • the music in this video is so beautiful

to był i pewnie nadal jest ulubiny kawałek sp tomka beksińskiego no i oczywiście mój

  • LOL ME TWO

  • Oh my God I am really really old!

  • ...and for any other interested oldies, they (The Shulman brothers aka 'Simon Dupree & The Big Sound Generation') released an anthology including 'Kites' and 'For Whom The Bell Tolls' et al in 2004, called 'Part of My Past'....

  • The girl speaking IS Jackie Chan but although she was Chinese she was actually born and raised in Trinidad, so didn't speak Chinese. When they recorded the track and the sound engineer wanted to add an authentic touch, they asked a local Chinese guy to write a few words which Jackie read out phonetically so no-one actually knows exactly what she's saying!

  • That has the ring of truth . Makes sense to me . Thanks .

  • Classic and Haunting ...

  • Veru nice!

  • truly a classic.....

  • A very special song. So much better than the Sluty crap you hear today.

  • Romantic......

  • NICE.

  • Music does certain things to people....

How is it possible when i first heard that song thought that was always inside my head just like todays EOS we are the people.......

  • Ah yes, but did you know that the core of Simon Dupree were the Shulman brothers, who eventually became Gentle Giant? Who, you say? Those of us who know can't believe Gentle Giant came out of this weird, poppy band. Also, for a time, a piano player named Elton John played with Simon Dupree. Ah, trivia...

  • whatever happened to beautiful songs like this

  • @JanineRobin

it was redone by ultraviolet in a techno version with a female vocalist.

sounds very nice, but you always have to give props to the original.

  • @JanineRobin

    Simon Cowell....X

  • ...loveliest of songs..

  • great !

    but ...

    makes me feel sad ..

    thanks for sharing :)

  • Brilliant Song!

  • someone did a little known reggae cover of this in the early eighties, It was very hypnotic & I can't get that version out of my head- anyone out there know did that one?

  • It sounds like she's saying towards the end of her speech; "you pour coffee, you annoy me"! A beautiful classic with some soaring mellotron!

  • Fantastic song.. Can never understand how this never went Gold and stayed there forever!! Loved it them, (with my first girlfriend) and always will..

    NEVER forget....

  • a wonderful, magical, enchanting song. There's something absolutely brilliant in it. If only there were more pieces like that...

  • one of the bests songs that i ever heard. I remember this song since i was achild. and now i am listening to it again and again, and i wNT MORE AND MORE. never i shall have enough. it IS AMAIZING

  • great song reminds me of freezing cold days coming home from primary school in the late 60s a wee bit creepy and atmospheric

  • One of my favourite songs from the 60's. "For whom the bell tolls" and "Like the Sun like the fire" were also great SD tracks. One was the B side to Kites but I can't remember which. Still fresh after all these years.

  • when i sing this song i start choking and my i get tears in my eyes. it is so beautiful.

  • i know how you feel yaro....some songs just make us feel choked up.

  • that is rude dont generalise.Anyway you aint so clever cos these people are Japanese.

  • What kind of drugs was this man on ? hey man, wicked psychodelic sounds man !! Where is this Hippy now ?

  • still in the clouds??????

  • Where is this hippy now? Can you say "Derek Shulman"? Founder of Gentle Giant, Executive record producer responsible for the success of Bon Jovi, and many many others. I guess the drugs he was on served him well.....

  • 30 years?!? Try 40.

From Simon Dupree to Gentle Giant... amazing transformation.

  • great song great video still great after 30 years

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever imho and Simon Dupre one of the most beautiful singers.

    What a showman ! x

  • I do wonder why she is wearing traditional Japanese dress, and in a Japanese garden if she is speaking Chinese.

  • Comment removed

  • The Chinese voiceover was by Jacqui Chan - a well known actress at the time ....

  • Thanks for info

  • eerie sound, scares me a bit

  • MK II Violins-Mellotron.

  • There is a copy version of this song in Tamil.. Akkarai Semai alakinil inimai... Kamal Movie... Music by Ilaiyaraja

  • If someone can give me the words in Chinese (Not in characters, but in English pronunciation) it would be appreciative. (Just the part where the woman speaks.

  • the word is that the woman in the middle isnt speaking any recognisible language so it not trnaslateable, weird song

  • I love this one but does anyone have "For Whom The Bell Tolls" please?

  • You're right Angela, lovely times, I was only 10 but fancy all Dupree songs, Anthology double CD just 5 years ago released, buy it (if you don't have it yet)great stuff

  • I love this song it evokes such a gentler time and way of life - or perhaps I am just being nostalgic - I was only 12 at the time mind. angela

  • that was perfict for that soung. i love simon dupree. and what they became.gental giant.

  • Re B&W videos for the 60s. Ever seen the promo for Stawberry Fields Forever? Anyway this is a timeless classic.

  • Great song timeless

  • This was one of the arrresting singles of the time - it has been a great pleasure to revisit it - thank you

  • It's a great song

  • It is 40 years now I think, a swan song for the summer of love I think. Great.

  • A timeless classic, great to hear it again.

  • So i dont understand...when and what was this video made for? It's in color, so obviously it wasn't made in the late sixties...Anyone know?

  • It was made for a short lived TV show headed by Dave Lee Travis where new videos were shot to accompany old hits

  • I remember the show, it was called 'The Golden Oldie Picture Show' and ran from 1986 to 1988.

  • Ah, what a great number this is. It's fun and silly and romantic at the same time. Girls think its romantic too, not just old kite makers like me! ;-) Japanese traditionally use kites to fly messages in the sky, celebrating births, important events, and I guess love too. What a cool tradition. ¦¬)

  • musica preferida,psicodelissima estrutura... maravilha desconcertante.ngor oy lay,everyone.

  • My wife, who is Cantonese, says the girl is speaking Cantonese and I must say I agree. You can hear her say, "Ngor oy lay" which means, "I love you." It's still a great song with a lovely tune that echoes when one is on beach or somewhere the same.

  • Simon Dupree (The Shulman Brothers) met up with the Beetles (Sargent Peppers) on their way into the recording studio and they let them borrom their intruments for "Kites."

  • This is still a great song after nearly 40 years.

  • and the japanese girl in the bridge of the song has the sexiest voice on vinyl

  • Always a bit tongue in cheek, but this is a great song with very high production values for 40 yrs ago
