  • An lili, ba leir e, bulain an la.

The lily (The Talbots of Malahide, fleur de lis are on the crest), it is clear, won the day.

An Irish song shamelessly robbed by the Orange army, which oddly enough was funded by the Pope.

France are horrible catholics, as are England to a lesser extent, only Calvinist Protestantism is good, like Scotland.

  • Im not too familiar with the history behind this song. Is it some kind of victory song of the British or Irish loyalists over the Irish or vice-versa?

  • @NBarker1993 I thought it was a song for the protestand (Irish) who fought for the Dutch King billy. They still hold the Orange marches to celebrate his victory over the catholic king James

  • @NBarker1993 Lilliburlero was written by Protestants about Irish Jacobites satirizing their hopes and prospects under the pro-Catholic government of James II of England. Those who fought for William of Orange sang it and it was said that Lilliburlero ‘sang James II out of three kingdoms’.

  • Dr. Slop wrapt his thumb up in the corner of his handkerchief, and with a wry face, though without any suspicion, read aloud, as follows, -- my uncle Toby whistling Lillabullero, as loud as he could, all the time.

  • @99loki Oh Ireland was Ireland when England was a pup; and Ireland will be Ireland when England has grown up. I am an Irish Catholic and I go to Sunday Mass; and pray all English bastards will kiss my Irish ass.

  • @lichtbroeder

I loved the first sentence: it's as true as true can be. But regarding the second: I'm of Irish Catholic descent, and I honestly ask if it isn't time to turn the page...?

  • @Zoboomafoobar Of course it is! I posted this in jest and in response to comments that say "down with popery" and the like.

  • For a ribald late 17th century century parody of this tune, look up "My thing is my own". All kinds of lyrics have been set to this music!

  • @99loki What have your sectarian prejudices got to do with this tune?
