You don't need a certification to use these machines. They're simple to use, but slightly difficult to get the parameters right on such as "gap distance", "prefusion time", "fusion voltage", etc.
SilentKiller: The smal box in the front is called a cleaver. It cuts the fiber to give it a perfect edge. The larger box is the splice machine which attaches the 2 ends together with a very hot arc. You catch on quickly!
splicing is simple and easy.. u just need to know the color coding.. the fibers should be clean (no dust - no liquid) before you put in a fusion machine..
I worked as a design engineer for York Technology. The cleaver was a flash of genius! Using an ultrasonic horn to cleave optical fibre! BTW, one of the founders of York Technology, Professor David Payne, and inventor of the erbium-doped fibre amplifier, has a CBE and a KELVIN Award, was recently awarded a MARCONI Prize for his inventions that changed the progress of mankind...I would hang on to the cleaver!
What gets rid of all the "gunk thats on it" is a static electricity charge that zaps any remaining dust particles on the freshly cleaved glass.

Does the operator need to know how to do anything or is this a fully automated process?

You have to get certified.

And someone that terminates fiber will charge you anywhere from $500-thousands of dollars just for one termination.

BTW the piece of equipment is like $30,000.00 dollars
