  • From 1:28 - 2:04 Cindy's imitating a heart beating with her left hand. Awesome.

  • damn.........what a sexy woman........and a great singer....it takes me back to the 80's

  • singing and praying.she is great artist.and their playing is also great.

  • I went there, I have a photo of me surrounded by about a thousand Japanese tourists. They photographed everything including the floor, the SF gates plus some dog poo if I'm not mistaken.

  • Always so creative and lovely and puts her heart and soul into everything she does.

  • Ryuichi Sakamoto plays keyboards!

    Sakamoto is Cyndi's close friend.

  • Beautiful Cyndi, love this tribute, and I love your vocals, and you are a loving human being, blessings of love & light to you xoxoxo

  • This is the most touching and creative cover of the song I've ever heard. You can hear the world-weariness in her voice.

  • When did Dylan go blonde!

  • I like her version. She's great.

  • Y is she playing like that WTF

  • Way to go Cyndi - You rock

  • wow that was amazing.

  • I remember watching this live. It's a terrific version of a terrific song

  • Mrs Lauper your awesome!!!

  • The music arrangement of this tribute is amazing.

I love the rasping she brings to this song, it suits it so well.

  • ew. not a good version at all

  • anyone know what year this is? I loved John and i love Cyndi.

  • Cyndi - just came across this. It's lovely.

  • QUEEN OF POP DEFO LOVE YOU CYNDI X X .

  • she sings this with passion and honesty and love

  • That was really Great Cyndi.

  • Cyndi is a great fan o John Lennon.... Beautiful version...

  • This version made me cry. Richie E (Merseyside UK).

  • cindy is one of the greatest musicians ever

  • I think she did pretty well! The essence of the song was kept but she also had her own style.

  • if you like this interpitation go search here doing joni mitchels song Carey, the band makes a mistake and she takes control ,totally great

  • As a Beatles fan i think when Cindy sings and plays Lennon's song she's brilliant.

  • I could hear and see John through her briliant performance.

    Magic.

  • I think she did an excellent job with it. Of course, in my opinion, everything CL touches turns into gold. She's a wonderful artist.

  • To Mickey...definitely not butchered. And even if it wasn't played exactly as you remember or liked it, who cares...it was about 3 weeks after 9/11 and was great to hear at the time...and needed.

  • Personally, I think she butchered this one.

  • it's great to see fans covering their favorites artists although i prefer listening to the better ones such as this but i prefer ben harper's version to this one.

  • ok i'm not a Lauper fan, but this video touched my heart. 5*

  • Well done Cyndi. You paid a fitting tribute to the great man by getting right inside this wonderful song.

  • Cindy,you're a great Lady.We love you!

  • WOW!!! :-)

  • great video!

i love beatles ( this include John ) and cyndi!!!

  • I think it's nice that she explains a bit about the history of the real Strwberry Fields at the start. It was still owned by the Salvation Army but ran by Liverpool Social Service in it's last years. Sad that it's closed down now!

  • her way of talking (and being) reminds me of yoko. I don't know why :D ;)

  • Great have loved Cyndi since Blue Angel days, she is so under rated here in Europe

  • she's playing a dulcimer

  • what's that instrument she's playing?

  • Ms. Lauper is truly AMAZING

  • Comment removed

  • Really nice performance

  • really amazing..the first time i heard her singing this, there was something very different and it really moved me...lots of emotions are coming out whenever she sings...and you can actually feel it...

  • I like lennons verrsion but i have to admit you add a touch of uniqueness... i love your voice. It's so unique and you know how to sing, lennon really did not know how to sing... he just got used to doing what he did best.

But... its nice to hear a female sing this song.

    ^_^

  • perfetct!!

  • touching performance

  • I've never been a fan of hers (I'm still not one) but she almost made me cry with this performance the first time I saw it, she gave it all.

And this was less than a month after 9/11, so I was also very touched by her words at the beginning

  • ????insane!

  • lol although I kind of agree with you, people cant change their ear drums. Everyones entitled to an opinion

  • This Woman??? That is Cyndi Lauper....tool. Who probably think Winehouse is the next best thing to Kool-aid.

  • Lennon had an ego the size of new york city. He had communist idea's that were dwarfed only by his rivalry with Paul. I'm just saying. LENNON RULES!!!!

  • dig it...dig it...

  • Cyndi's voice is so deep. She has soul!

    I love Cyn

  • Yes, she has soul indeed. Always great to hear Cyndi sing.

  • really beautiful.

  • speak too the hand

  • Beautiful version by Cyndi, really awesome.

  • i love cindy but this blew me away FANTASTIC

  • what a voice.

  • lol this woman sounds like a new age guru

  • kinda scary tho but i love her!

  • not a bad cover

    could´ve been better

  • Maybe you can call Cyndi up and tell her what you didnt like and how to improve it...im sure shed be glad to from you.

  • I had to look at Cindi in a new light after seeing this live on tv. Well done.

    LOVE

  • i honestly don't see why everyone says that this cover is horrible. i think its one of the best i've heard.

  • I agree. It's different but I think it's really good. Best Beatle cover I ever heard is Regina Spektor doing Real Love live at Lollapalooza. It's on You Tube.

  • Cindy Lauper should record her version of "Strawberry Fields Forever".

  • This girl can REALLY sing!

  • i still miss the drums... but great cover anyway!

  • Amazing

  • kkk

  • so, one time, i went to the lennon tribute there, but it was before i knew the beatles existed, and now i pretty much hate myself! : O

  • LOL dont hate yourself, that happens...

  • Oh wow oh wow oh wow!!!! Cyndi Lauper!? The Beatles!? HOW BETTER COULD IT GET!!!

  • Comment removed

  • My favourite Beatles song...really great job!

  • Cyndi's the best of alltime, period!

  • fucking amazing.

    really beautiful.

    ;)

  • Man I forgot how awesome her cover of this was. She's so underrated and so amazing.

  • one of the most underated vocalist's / entertainers of our time. talented beyond the exceptional.

  • oh she gave to the song her style...yeah, i like it cuz there`s a realy strong feeling when she sings.

  • check out my john lennon tribute for this song

it's on my page, hope you like it

  • Amazing

  • LENNON LIVES ON!

    loved it ♥♥♥♥

  • whats with her hand

  • she's conducting the band, keeping the tempo.....you notice there's no drummer.

  • she is keeping tempo

  • Best cover of strawberry fields forever ive ever heard, and its not an easy song to cover, especially because its a beatles song..

R.I.P JOHN LENNON!! the world will never 4get u!!

    xxx

  • she's absolutely ICONIC!

  • Celebrate the life rather than mourn the death

  • Great! Great! Great! she is just an amazing wommyn and such an inspiration to a lot of people.

    LOVE THIS GIRL CALLED, CYNDI!

  • I agree, the best cover version of Strawberry Fields, I've eva heard.

thanks for posting and God Bless

  • you are IDIOT!! she has a great voice

    Clean your ears!!

  • I miss girl singers like this. Today we have crappy singers like Miley Cyrus, Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, etc. Cyndi Lauper has an amazing voice

  • yeah yeah yeah go Ms. Lauper! -voices with character or the

"perfect sounds like a bell voice?" -- love it love the soulful voices - Dylan- Gregg Allman- each and everyone -- sing a song -

  • To call her a poor singer just shows how ignorant you are - look up live performances such as I'm Gonna Be Strong and then try to say the same thing... you'll only end up looking ridiculous. Plus - this is a tribute! Hardly shows a lack of inspiration, just shows a love for one of her favourite bands. If you knew anything about her work you would not be implying that she is uninspired.

  • Objectivity of a fan is dificult to interpret. That's the problems with fans. I like singers myself who aren't really good singers, and it's no big deal for me. And to call me ignorant at the same time shows your ignorance as well, so we apparently are both ignorant (I don't mind).

  • If you had simply said that you didn't like her voice then that would have been fine, but whether she is a poor singer or not is not exactly subjective. She's NOT a poor singer, but she may have a voice that is not to everyone's taste, it's a simple as that. It was a cheap attack by someone who clearly had no knowledge of the artist in question and was a bit butthurt that they dared to sing a Beatles song.

  • @untoldsarcasm well said

  • I listened to your suggestion "I'm Gonna Be Strong". It's a bit of a Celine Dion song, musically and lyrically not very interesting. Her voice however is better than in Strawberry Fields, but it's not as good/strong as the voice of for instance Sinead O'Connor or Janis Joplin, sorry.

  • ....not as strong as janis joplin?

I love janis joplin but...uh cyndi lauper's voice is def stronger.

And Sinead O'Connor doesn't even have the same kind of sound as cyndi lauper so that is irrelevant.

  • Cyndi used to sing Joplin covers in the 70's!

  • I am aware of that.

  • Sorry, misread your comment. I thought you were saying Joplin was a better singer.

  • @akoppen #1 On the Blues Charts 14 weeks in a row and counting!!!

  • @sal4video being at nr. 1 doesn't say anything about quality, more about the taste of large populations (keep lady gaga in mind)

  • An editor for Rolling Stone called this the best live cover of the year. Shows what you morons know who are dogging it. I;m not a fan of the song personally, but she does an amazing job. I would rather hear her do "Let It Be."

  • me too!

  • I've heard that song too much

  • great reinterrpritation of a classic beatles song''' her voice is phenomenal....go cyndi''you rock''...

  • Best Version of Strawberry Fields , not a Beatles version

  • "Best Version of Strawberry Fields , not a Beatles version"

Ahh, your an idiot for saying that. The Beatles version was amazing.

  • did she sing it correctly?im quite sure ive never heard some of the lyrics she sang...

  • Yes... She sang it correctly.

  • ok my mistake..thanks

  • ryuichi sakamoto plays piano

  • its better then the original, and i loved the original!

  • she's got such an impressive range. i didn't know that. i've always liked strawberry fields, the original, but this isn't bad. not bad at all. thanks for sharing.

  • I hope John L. saw and heard this that night. Cyn loves him like crazy.

  • We all love him like crazy don't we except for this asshole who shot him.

  • i like how she uses her hands in the beg of the song

  • Seen Cyndi many times. She always comes from a very Loving Place.

  • She has stood the test of time and is one of my inspirations for dulcimer music. Awesome talent.

  • Amazing.

  • Classic! Right after 9/11, the feeling in New York was very sad..but new yorkers are pretty strong..Ms. Lauper is a very gifted artis!

  • The song suggests the healing power of music (as a child John loved the Salvation Army band at the Fields)and the confusion faced when we are dealing w. one another (no one is in my tree). But there is also in Cyn's rendition a nudge to people and musicians to open their eyes (living is easy with eyes closed). Cyndi intros. song with words of optimism, channeling Lennon's later work Imagine. These opening words are spoken not only to NYers, I think, but to the world.

  • It's kind of weird to think about this song with its insane lyrics being sung in Central Park right after 9/11. It probably in a way felt pretty appropriate to the bewildering feeling of the moment.

  • Who is she waving to?

  • one of the most reinterpreted songs ever,

  • I thought John Lennon grew up in Liverpool like Paul, Ringo and George, not around "the block" in New York??!!

  • no, i think she said the real strawberry fields was an orphanage where John grew up...that now they call that area in central park strawberry fields...since his death...in his honor

  • "Strawberry Fields Forever" & Ever & Ever & Ever..................This has inspired me to take the "Triangularthree" there to feel the spirit and record "Imagine" in Central Park...........Very Cool Cindy........

  • Wow. I just finished Jan Wenner's book Lennon Remembers and typed lennon tribute into the search. I think he would have loved this performance as it was more than singing. She truly painted a picture. Thanks.

  • omg beautiful performance even tough her crazy style

  • Wow, that was a remarkable performance ! I hadn't heard Cindi sing this before and was rather sceptical as I feared hearing a botched version of a beautiful song. I need not have feared - a beautiful cover. Thanks for taking the trouble of posting.

  • A positive surprise to see and hear Cindy like this.

A fine, well balanced interpretation of a great song.

(sry, but her "Working class hero " cover is pure horror.)

  • was this performance held before 911 or after ?

  • October 2, 2001 - after

  • She made me cry! This was right after 9/11. Cyndi Lauper..The Unusual Girl with so much Class!!

  • This happened less than a month after the towers went down. what was the energy like in that park? wow. The mind reels.

  • Cyndi, you've improved! This is not nearly as terrible as the way you butchered Lennon's Imagine. It's not just you though, I've noticed how other artists usually destroy your songs as well... even when they're trying to sing with you.

  • Great cover and good speech too

  • aww. i like this one

    Cyndi Lauper is awsome singer

  • Thanks Cyndi Lauper. The story you told in this video about Strawberry Fields I didn't know that. Cyndi is a mutli talented gurl. Watch her on OETA TV Network and see what I mean. Love and Hugs Cyndi!

  • Ditto to all of those above who love both Cyndi and John. This is nice :)

  • She's playing a dulcimer.

I agree with duffh, she's really special.

Being both a Beatles fan and Cyndi Lauper fan, you can't imagine how pleased I was when I saw her rendition of a Lennon song. I'd love to see her doing more Lennon covers, like Dig a Pony, Tomorrow Never Knows or Don't Let Me Down. She has the perfect voice for it. Too bad she does one cover per decade.

  • Check out her covers of Hey Bulldog and Working Class Hero here on youtube.

You can also find her singing Joni Mitchell's Carey here too which is fantastic!

Cyndi has covered many songs. Her album At Last is completely covers :)

  • i love this performance. thanks for sharing it! hey, what do you call the instrument that cyndi plays here? =)

  • I wanted to add - Kevein Spacey also performed at this tribute - he sang "Mind Games" and was awesome! I cannot find this clip on YouTube - if anyone has it please post. Thank you!

  • I recall seeing this live at the time. Awesome. Thanks

  • There's something special about that woman.

  • i've always loved this performance by Cyndi....she's an amazing talent...i always thought she was heavily underrated in the 80s and it seems her voice is so much better today. Peace always to John and the world.

  • I agree!

  • I really liked this cover.

  • not too bad, once she starts singing
