  • Love this woman's voice. 1996 had SO MANY great songs.. good year for women.

  • She was Adele, before Adele was Adele!!!!

  • Oddly enough, Joan Osborne is currently working on a sheep ranch in Montana..Reality is STRANGER than fiction...

  • In addition, as was stated already, the song was not called "God", it was called "one of us" a massive hit in 1995 and fyi, it was the one and only song on the cd that Joan did not write, it was written by Eric Bazilian the lead vocalist for the band "the Hooters" who were popular in the late 80's, specifically for Joan. She wrote all of the other songs on the cd.

  • For those who are wondering, the reference in the chorus is to Mother Therresa of Calcutta India, the catholic nun who achieved sainthood. In the verse the fictional person's hardships and difficulty in life cause her to look for guidance and to cry out to St. Therresa for help.

  • @Timotaa

ahhh.....actually the song title references St. Teresa of Avila.

Mother Theresa is not a saint yet

  • totally love it

  • after years finally i remembered , or should i say googled this piece..i doubt every time i heared sting´s mad about you couse there are some rhymes similar

  • Uh, what's with the sheep? Sheep in hotel rooms means weird shit is afoot.

  • @jacobeast1 I thought it had to do with falling asleep and counting sheep, but it is very strange and certainly up for whatever interpretation you like. Personally, I like the song, but the imagery just confuses the matter.

  • Was she on acid in this video ?? So weird !! Music is excellent !!!

  • Great song but what drug addict made this video? Overflowing goldfish, sheep, flying toilet brushes?

  • One of the best rock songs of the 90's!

  • one of the most beautiful and pure songs ever

  • LOVE JOAN, What a GREAT talent! :)

  • lovely! First time i heard of her,..willask radios to play her! listening in Ireland

  • one of the best songs ever

  • la cancion me encanta... pero el video es horrible

  • I saw this on VH1 when I was eight; for some reason, the fact that she found a live goldfish in the toilet freaked the hell out of me. That scene haunted my psyche for years; I had nightmares about fish in the toilet for quite a while. But I could never remember the song, and then my friend sang it at karaoke, and suddenly I realized, "THIS IS THE VIDEO WITH THAT FRIGGEN GOLDFISH." Watching and listening now, it's still freaky, but makes a LOT more sense. And I really like the song.

  • handle chemicals with care, never mix them, hallucinations may happen...otherwise the song is amazing! where is joan when we need her !! where?? where??

  • SCRUB THE TOILET HUNNY

  • One of the prettiest songs.. this video in no way does it justice....

  • Was getting ready for a night out and put her performace on PBS on for background and found myself glued. The girl I had the date with was to be my wife who also happen to own a copy of the CD.

  • great American vocalists are being snuffed out by Fox Network employees posing as radio DJs

that's why you hear the dullest singer in the world, Adelle, all fucking day long

  • Damn this song is soooo good! I loved it when this album came out and it still brings me to my knees now.

  • everybody says i look like her ....thats weird then i really looked at her and we do look alike

  • 178 thousand views since 2009?! What is wrong with people? Serious talent here unlike most of the artists in the spotlight (or banner under this video) these days

  • Joan, you lift my soul. You are the best. We share a birthday. I'm your #1 fan.

  • Listen to her singing what becomes of the broken hearted..freking awsome :)

  • Not bad but I think she cannot compete with roxete & girl from Crannbarries

  • I think this song is about getting stoned.

  • A song that is timeless and a true masterpiece.......one of my favs of all time.

  • i wonder if peta ever got on her case about the goldfish

  • @barkpeeler2000 They hire veterinarians at $500 a day to make sure the gold fish are

    H A P P Y !

they feed'em extra after the shoot, send 'em all to good homes...

  • theres just something about this song....its so......AMAZING! AND MYSTICAL AND CATCHY

  • I don't know Joan but I loved her soulful voice in the "Standing in the Shadows" documentary, does she have any soul albums? or any specific soul songs?

  • oh st teresa higher than the moon

  • I absolutely love this song. Listen 2 it when i think. Makes me cry. N any man who can't admit 2 crying has a major problem.

  • Comment removed

  • Anyone else think that Haley from American Idol looks somewhat like Joan?

  • The first woman I fell in love with and refused to admit it introduced me to this tune. Still, to this I think of her when i hear this song.

  • Like most VEVO content, it stopped 1/3 of the way through, then when I reloaded it, it started again with an advert. I couldn't be bothered.

  • @dfarmbrough vevo are parasitic vermin. How did they worm into youtube? whats the story with this, do you know.....?

  • @fulcrum300 I speculate that they managed it through a combination of threats of copyright breach lawsuits and financial incentives. Well, it's going to be more complicated than that, of course - they're probably just one legal entity among several interested parties. They're established as a commercial exploiter of music on YouTube, and one which would appear to have privilege that most YouTube users do not.

  • This was a great album. "God" was the weakest song on it.

  • @Neckkit absolutely! (though i`m also not a fan of the naked song... but maybe a case of overplay), very bluegrassy, funky and just generally sweeeeeet..! wish I could cover it but don`t think I could do it any better than this, i`d just want to copy her original to the exact arrang, truly wicked song, and an amazing band behind her (check out live version on trans-atlantic sessions)

  • @Neckkit There were no weak songs, only weak speakers. That baby was outstanding front to back, much like Joan herself. :)

  • @Neckkit I am so happy to hear another person say that

  • @Neckkit although "one of us" was probably the reason my dad bought this album, this has always been my favorite song on it.

  • @jdoshi4 ...@me what?

  • @clairemorrison that's so weird...i don't even know how my computer did that! :/

  • @Neckkit oh motherfucker i agree, that was the only song that got attention despite the fact that it was the only dud on the disc. "long black coat(dylan)" "teresa" "dracula moon" the lets get naked songs, classics

  • @Neckkit God was the weakest song yet the biggest hit. hmmmm

  • @Y2Jin99 "God" was the only radio friendly tune on the disc. Didn't hurt that it showed up in TV and movies.

  • @Neckkit Absolutely! This CD has been in my car since I got it when it first came out. I always skip over "One Of Us" because it got SOOO much airplay. All of the other songs are so excellent. My favorite is "Spiderweb" about Ray Charles. Unfortunately, I'm afraid she's gonna end up a one hit wonder.

  • @whitewolf80ful This was a very mature record I don't think the buying public(mostly tweens) could fully grasp this broad and dynamic record.

  • @Neckkit Its called "One of Us" not "God"

  • What I wouldn't give to have Joan in bed with me, nibbling on my ear...

  • nice toilet video

  • Great song. Shitty video :( Disappointed.

  • love the piercing

  • this song gives me chills. imagine just driving in the dessert while the suns going down with this on. I love this masterpiece

  • LSD's a HELL of a drug....

  • Vevo go home

  • I HATE VEVOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • At one venue she sold a grand total of 12 tickets..keep flippin those burgers...hon..She was a first class bitch on her last tour...

  • @trkdigital She came too my hometown twice and completely sold out both times. She is an incredible woman with unspeakable talent. Unlike the crap the clogs our radio's today with all the pre-packaged corporate crap. While we listen to people with actual talent, you can keep listening to auto tuned brats who are famous for absolutely nothing.

  • Is this the first video that features cleaning a toilet as part of the storyline?

  • This is one of my favorite songs! Artists like Joan from the 90's just have so much more passion in their art than the money-hungry attention hogs of today.

  • @clvlndmike Exaactly, I love her. Go Joan.

  • @Neckkit It definitely was a great album. I love "God", the weakest song in my opinion is "Dracula Moon."

  • Read Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons", and pay special note to the sculpture that denotes Fire. 'The Ecstasy of St. Teresa". Then listen to this song. Adds a weird twist to it, doesn't it? Especially if you're paying attention to the TV in the background of the video.

  • @thetalkofthetown that's actually the root of how I searched for this video, I didn't think I'd find someone with the same connection.

  • Read Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons", and pay special note to the sculpture that denotes Fire. 'The Ecstasy of St. Teresa". Then listen to this song. Adds a weird twist to it, doesn't it?

  • Oh Saint Teresa, Where are you when I needed you. I just want to go down to the hollow and sit with you.

  • Any know the chord to the guitar part during the chorus?

  • @thedarkside7979 Ultimate Guitar and musicnotes should satisfy this request., also check out sheetz box (remove space - doht cohm). Something, something your friends, something, something, the dark side! :-D

  • @thedarkside7979 Most of the song follows the Am F G E Am pattern. The chorus is in C. Play around with it you should be able to get it. It's pretty simple to figure out

  • Her voice brings shivers down my spine. So fucking talented.

  • talented and bright

  • If the god was like she is I accept it because I remember her debut on big scene and mtv with" if the god was one of us " and it was one of the most beautiful songs I ever heard, this is the second

  • please joan use the safety belt!!!!and keep singing like you do baby!!!

  • jjjjooooaaaaannnn

  • tell me,tell me,tell me, TELL MEEEEEEEEEEEEE :D

  • sweet bleeding jesus her voice is ..... wow.

  • cool

    大好きでございます。

  • I love this woman's voice.

  • is it me or does the drummer look like the edge from U2?

    anyway loooove this song.

  • @jovanna242

    That's Chalo Quintana , ex Cruzados ;-)

  • i remember this...was my favorite song in the 90's!!! she's genuine i dont now about too many of these other imitator waffers/crackers wit the chocolate sound....a lil too obvious. she didnt try she just had a soulful sound. and i respected that!!!!

    peace and blessing!

    much respect to real music...period

  • Note if you see pulsing fruit in a empty room that doenst belong to you its best to have GC standing by

  • Joan's career has cooled off after One of Us so she may actually be working as a chambermaid as we speak.

  • Comment removed

  • @iw32 "One of Us", though a fine song in itself, was a lame label choice for a single. It shows nothing of Joan's passion and power like this song does. The sound of her voice and this song resonates with me from top to bottom, front to back. Not so much the drug references but the soul of it. Whew. Check her song, "Ray Charles" sometime. dang.

If she's a chambermaid, she's singin' some hella blues while she's doin' it.

Heard about her new album. Gettin' it.

  • @RhythmUniverse The Ray Charles song is called Spider Web.I have the Relish album.Joan's great but her latter day output has gone under the radar for the most part,Unfortunately.

  • @iw32 Yeah, that's so unfortunate. She seems to have lost some of that fire. Hope they haven't drugged her up on Xanax like they like to do. "Too Creative, too alive!!! Wooo woooo, danger, Will Robinson!! Call out the Black Label drugs!!"

I love her voice too. Here's to a complete resurgence - in her and her career.

  • best mix i have ever listend to! awesome!

  • Did the crazy censors change 'hash' to 'cash'??

  • yes joan osborne`s too kind ro hurt a little fish;indeed she`s no harmful but absoltely harmless cause she`s angel!

  • I'm going to get all her albums so I can have them on my ZUNE :D

  • I remember getting SO excited if this song came on the radio! God, I miss the '90s.

  • Looks like there was LSD in that strawberry

  • good

  • This song can be described with one word... haunting.

  • First time I've gotten to see this video, even though I bought the CD in high school, thanks to the miracle of YOUTUBE. I saw her years later off Euclid Ave. in Atlanta too... she is so awesome! I hope she doesn't mind me singing her songs, I had the whole album memorized and could sing the whole thing when I was a little younger from start to finish! Guess you could say I've been a fan since I was 17, and I'm now 30. Go Joan :D ~~ !

  • Watching this video now there is no way of telling it was made in the '90s. Awesome video even for todays standards.

  • Can't believe joan never became massive.

  • how the hell do you get the idea she's Jewish

what planet did you fall off of

  • She is lovely! Joan you are Great!

  • This song rules !

  • jdirtydave can I come live with you please?

  • absolutely love this song

  • Gorgeous song!!!

DaProlifik1reaLyrics, all you say is true.

The only thing that matters is that they can't buy our souls...

That's why, everything trapped by this industry turns into a big shit. Because the soul supposed to be free.

  • Love the song. The video sure sucks though.

  • Kind of a tragic song, really.

  • Whilst trapped in the furthest reaches of Fairbanks AK. i would listen to this song on mypod in the middle of the night after drinking alone and run through the campus screaming it to the cold sky. great way to let off steam. and piss of neighbors. if you are an alcoholic.

  • Sooo much soul in this song. Love the layering of the instrumentation, her voice is so soulful and the bass line so simple yet supportive. Great song.

  • LOVE this song. LOVE the lyrics. **LOVE** her voice....

    Higher than the moon....

  • fucking vevo, why do I have to watch some advertisement so some coorperation can make money and have a video that doesn't load right? Greed, simple greed, the industry is fucked and youtube, since google took over, damn. Good song, but I hate this shit. Thank God they can't touch the underground artists. Fuck the whole music industry in general, music is supposed to be expression of soul, not what some a&r tells you to do to make money and brainwash the people, only way to make it is sell out.

  • @DaProlifik1reaLyrics

    Love the sentiment; u r 100% right.

  • Now only if I can make my room clean itself and make my bed

  • she's jewish. just like ur messiah, jesus. and talented as fuck.

  • @glenneveaux

Miss Joan is an Agnostic who was raised Catholic.

  • Alternate title: "Joan Osborne Trips Balls... with The Edge Playing Drums" ;-)

  • I really like the song.

But what does the video mean???

    I have no idea....

    Hope someone can help :-)

    Bye
