pretty sure they heard some early sabbath at some point and came up with this... for those who dont know sabbath was around at this point and playing clubs that floyd played...i think its just a point they made. any thing you can do we can too... its not as cool or hard as the sabath but considering the time it was made it pretty awsome and too me says they could produce andy sound that they wanted

This song came out in 1969. Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild and Iron Butterfly's Ina Gadda Da Vida and The Beatles Helter Skelter all came out in 1968. So, yeah, one of the first metal songs, but definitely not the first. I wouldn't classify Led Zeppelin as a metal band. I see them more as being blues. Jimmy Page even said that he hated people calling Zep a metal band, but to each their own.

Well, yes, and I understand what you are saying, but there is something about "The Nile Song" that literally leaps nearly 20 years ahead like no other song that I've yet heard before it was made. Of course it was influenced by precursors but there is a very forward looking heavy metal sound in it that I simply can't find before it.
