I think this was the worst loss for me when Ali lost to Spinks. I knew he was about washed up but to lose to someone like Spinks just made me sick. At least when he lost before it was to great fighters like Frazier and Norton. Ali should have hung it up after the Thrilla in Manila.

Excellent fight, Spinks threw a lot more throughout but Ali defended well for the most part and picked his punches a lot better. I'd say Ali won the second half of the fight slightly but had a really slow start. In my opinion this one could've been called either way, Spinks gets mad credit for going 15 rounds so early in his career and standing in there and brawling all of the 15 rounds with Ali. Ali looked a lil too defensive early probably thinking Spinks would tire and it caused him

After the gifts Ali was given in the third Norton fight, the Jimmy Young fight, the Shavers fight, the early Lyle stoppage, etc. which "the greatest" clearly lost by any sane person's standards, the judges finally ruled with their heads and not hearts and rendered a just verdict. Ali lost this fight. He lost a lot of others but was given the decision. If the decisions rendered in those 4 above fights were accurate his reputation would (and should) rightfullly take a drubbing.

Chi as you mentioned he was a criminal who spent time in jail for his cowardice. The fact of the matter was he was scared. He knew there were no breaks between rounds in Vietnam, and he knew there were no rules. Ali was and will continue to be the biggest coward in U.S. history!

@DDixon1000 If you did some research on Ali you'd know that the Army told him he wouldn't pick up a single weapon but would entertain troops. Saying he didn't join because he was afraid shows how little you know. He choose not to join because in the act of joining he was supporting the very people who put him down. Instead of fleeing, he choose to stay in America and fight the government. He won. He proved his bravery. A coward runs away, a man stands and fights, MUHAMMAD ALI defines bravery :)

Ali at the time was the most hated man in America, if he was out for money he would have went to the army, he wouldn't have carried a single weapon but he stood for what he believed. He didn't flee, he stood his ground. He was loyal to his country. There is a great difference between a man who is loyal to his country and one who is loyal to a government. Contact I serve my country on a daily basis, I put my self in harms way everyday for my fellow citizens which include you. In war and on the streets there are no rules, and no breaks between rounds. Clay realized he wouldn't last a second with real warriors and got scared. He used Vietnam as an excuse to mask his cowardice. He's not a hero, he's a coward, and will always be a coward! Cassius Clay was certainly the "prittyest" heavyweight. maybe the most skilled with his feet and hands. But toughest? NO WAY.......... Get that referee out the way and forgo the 3 minute round nonsense, and Clay would have been utterly destroyed by the likes of Foreman,Frazier, Marciano, etc; etc; He was not a "brawler" he was a highly skilled/gym trained boxer . Maybe the most skilled. But skill isn't everything.

@spactick It's more than a record, Marciano beat at that time the oldest heavyweight champion there ever was and other fighters who fought at middle weight. People are shocked these days if cruiserweights can make it to heavyweight. I don't think the Holmes fight is indicative of anything except brain damage.

@capablemachine I just don't think you can make comparisons to fighters of different eras. It's impossible to do for the simple reason that at anytime a puncher can make a lucky punch and that's it. Take Ken Norton VS Jerry Cooney for example. Do you really think that Cooney is overall a better fighter than Norton. I don't know.

I think this was the worst loss for me when Ali lost to Spinks. I knew he was about washed up but to lose to someone like Spinks just made me sick. At least when he lost before it was to great fighters like Frazier and Norton. Ali should have hung it up after the Thrilla in Manila.

he hadn't had more than 12 wins entering this fight and he barely weighed 200 pounds.

Excellent fight, Spinks threw a lot more throughout but Ali defended well for the most part and picked his punches a lot better. I'd say Ali won the second half of the fight slightly but had a really slow start. In my opinion this one could've been called either way, Spinks gets mad credit for going 15 rounds so early in his career and standing in there and brawling all of the 15 rounds with Ali. Ali looked a lil too defensive early probably thinking Spinks would tire and it caused him
