I still like the gritty atmosphere of the original unmodded game. Of all the STALKER games and mods, the unmodded original still captures the most immersive vibe (at least for me). Call of Pripyat and Clear Sky might have better graphics (especially the lighting effects in CoP) but the original captures something unique. Maybe it's nostalgic for those of us who played the original ShoC back in 2007. For extra nostalgia, try getting your hands on earlier builds (like build 1935 from 2004).

This game sometimes is too hard. I was inside a building, with one guy coming, I unloaded an entire magazine on his face up-close, and it wouldn't die. I tried this, sneaking around and nothing would work. And there were even more guys, just like this one surrounding the building. No chance, no fun.

Fallout 3 is story-based (in my opinion, poorly) on a previous series of games developed by Black Isle - a now non-existing division of Interplay. The world in F3 was "modeled" according to Bethesda's previous game "Oblivion".

On the other hand, I remember S.T.A.L.K.E.R. being previewed in a gamers magazine back in 2004, and, as said in the video, is based on the Chernobyl catastrophe, and is not a post-apocalyptic world. Although I guess it "feels" that way ingame.

So many people say 'look at the tessellation on those brick walls, etc to show how good a game is. But in STALKER it's excellent in other ways: For example, have you noticed the rain doesn't come through roofs unless there are holes? Or that it gets lighter if you stand under a tree? No other game handles rain as realistically as the STALKER games!

@grineti5 i dont think you should get clear sky, i heard it wasnt very good and it doesnt add much that you can't just google to the story. i wouldn't worry about running call of pripyat because even though the graphics are much improved over shadow of chernobyl, the engine is also improved so shadow of chernobyl for me actually runs worse on my computer than call of pripyat does. my computer sucks and i have no problem running either game as long as i dont have the dynamic lighting on.

@grineti5 well, I have a 5600+, 2Gb ram and a 260GTX and with everything at max it runs flawlessly. You should be able to, even with a 9600GT it ran flawlessly. There are a lot of settings to tinker with and because the Grfx engine was made in the early 2000's, it doesn't need that much power. Just patch it all the way up to 1.5 and you should be OK.

This game is simply breathe taking in every aspect of the term. The firefights in the game are incredibly realistic and you'll find yourself taking cover behind anything you can crouch behind while taking pop shots at enemies. The enemy a.i is probably by far the best I have ever seen in a game. They will actually take cover, move from cover points to another if their position isn't good enough and will flank you and stay mobile which brings in a sense of realism.

The choice depends on your taste:

First one - IF you want a better story line. It requires more time to play thru and is more stable if you load up the latests patches.

The second one - if you want better graphics. The storyline is weaker and the bugs are a bigger issue (not all of them have been fixed).

The game was simply too ambitious, and i wouldnt really call tha faction thing a Roleplaying element. The Marked One had as good as no personality and, except from the guy that saves him at the beginning, it had no real memorable characters. It makes for a good, athmospheric First-Person-Shooter though.

@Greippi285 I don't have any of those problems, but aren't your drivers a bit out of date? Have you checked to see what services you are running as well as Firewall and Anti-Virus, because it sounds like a service is switching on to check for an update or something and that is crashing the game.
