to build up pressure in can. you can do the same thing to can-air, after you used it for a minute or two the can-air would lose pressure and get icey-cold, just dunk it in warm/hot water for a minute or two and you'll be back in business again.
do you paint the out side or the inside of the body ?

It's to make the flow of paint better - If it's spray, you don't need to shake it that much and hardly jams.
