  • Bob Ross did study under this guy. In fact, he capitalized on his techniques and made them gimmicky. They had a running feud for years. They ended up enemies. So much for "happy little trees".

  • @matrags Bob Ross did study with Bill. So did Buck Paulson, Lowell Speers, Diane Andre, Brenda Harris, and Robert Warren. I study with Robert Warren because he lives in my town.

  • "You girls...you should kiss me for showing you all those wonderful things...See? ah, there you are....and now I can make your husband maaaad...."

  • he's always singing random things, where is his brain!? and wth? whats with that fat ol brush?

  • on season 2 of Bob Ross show in1982 Bob was crying dedicating the first episode of season 2 to Bill Alexander

  • The technique is called "alla prima" the dutch masters were doing it in the 1500s.

  • There are a ton of Bill's DVD's currently available.

  • I know Bob Ross passed away, but is Alexander still alive?

  • No....sadly, Bill left us in January,1997....I wish I'd had the chance to meet him & tell him the impact he had on my life...albiet a small way...

  • i dont think so

  • I assume you don't know that William taught Bob Ross the technique? I originally didn't know either. Wonder if William learned it from somebody else..?

  • Painting wet on wet was nothing new when Bill Alexander started doing it, but he more or less perfected what we know as wet on wet. Nobody else taught him although he did have some limited art instruction when he was an adult. He painted as a child and considering where he grew up, actual instruction at that time was probly unavailable.

  • Didn't Bob Ross study under this guy?

  • Yessir, he did. Bob mentioned it in season 2 somewhere.

  • He would have been a fantastic storyteller....even if he had never picked up a paintbrush....I love to hear his accent & his way with words!

  • He has a "Prussian" accent....a mixture of Russian& German & Polish!! I could listen to him talk and teach for hours!

  • both are them are cool. ross and alexander. i like watching them on PBS

  • LOL, is there ANYONE watching that video who didn't first hear of him (or remember him) from Patton Oswalt's sketch on 222? :-)

  • Yes, I am. I heard of him before the sketch and watched his show all the time as a kid. But yeah, I clicked this because I was listening to the sketch....

  • Wasn't it Bob Ross who painted 'Happy' things? Or was BA the first? He is happy, no doubt... He does wonders with that decorating brush. I must have a go... When I find me some cheaper colours!

    Jack Kolber

  • I just can't believe that he always painted to whole picture with one HUGE brush!!! That's crazy!!!

  • He didn't always use one huge brush. He also used a 1 inch brush, fan brushes, liner brushes and palette knives.

  • Now I make your husband mad!

  • LOl!!

I can't stop laughing watching this guy thanks to Patton Oswalt!

  • What was the name of his show. Can you get it on dvd?

  • He had 2 different shows:

    "The Magic of Oil Painting"

    197? - 1984

    "Art of William Alexander"

    1984-94

None of his programs are avaliable on DVD yet as of 2007.

  • hi Bear contact me I have a lot of Bills shows. I am one of his students go to magicbrushart at aol

  • Bill was a great painter. I wish more of his videos were available. Check out my dedication video.

  • I remember he once mixed some blue/purple paint and said, "See? It makes you want to eat it." and I knew exactly what he meant. Any kind of spontaneous or abrupt brush stroke "Fire it in there, Fire it in there."

  • I wish I could find some more episodes, I even contact PBS in hopes they had it archived. no luck.

  • bear I have the shows contact me at magicbrushartdotcom

  • Bear, his shows are likely to start playing on the Visual Arts Network channel available thru Dish network.

  • This was from the 1989-90 season of "Art of William Alexander & Lowell Speers," anyways Bill was still fun to watch here. This was the season that often featured Bill or Lowell painting outdoors. Long live "THE ALMIGHTY BRUSH!"

I used to watch BA's painting shows from 1984 to 1992 (even the late 80's/early 90's programs, where Alexander would appear every other week, while one his proteges would appear the other week)
