@eddyproca Lazarus signal is triggered by hypoxia, after turning off the ventilator. Sometimes it may be caused by movements madein the patient's neck.
I was curious to find out more about the Lazarus Sign and what causes it and I noticed that your last excerpt was almost word for word of the Wikipedia article.
I'm a fan and all but, yeah... after seeing your video to AtheistAntidote it makes me raise an eyebrow.
Heh... I'm not exactly sure which part you're referring to, but you may have it the other way around. If you look at the "statistics & data" section of the video, you'll notice that whoever wrote the article had used this video as a source.
What in the world is the stimulus for this? I was able to find that it occurs after air tubes are removed. But the throat I thought connects to the CNS well above the arms. So then it's a response to cell malnourishment - directly in the arms or to pain pathways?
Though the thing about 39% made it sound to me as though you were saying "39% show the Lazarus sign", whereas the source you cite on Pubmed says 39% show some sort of movement, and only 1 in 38 subjects showed a Lazarus.
while it is interesting, it's unrelated. The chicken wasn't fully decapitated and while appeared headless, had it's jugular vein, part of it's brain and an ear in tact. Same principle that allowed Phineas Gage to survive: not all parts of the brain are necessary for basic survival.
possibly the most comfortable according to our body shape, or a survival trait. The arms grow in that general position during birth and naturally try to keep bent when not in use (exceptions when we consciously try to keep them unbent or when walking and gravity intervenes)
If it were a srvivl thing, it could be to protect the check where the vital organs are. Does not explain leaving the head vulnerable but some food for thought
No... I wasn't making any sort of statement like that with this video. I was simply sharing something which I came across that I found to be interesting.
pain is only interperatible by the brain. the chickens brain would most likley be dead after 4-5 seconds, and most of it`s nerves were severed so I wouldent worry about suffering too much.
We(hospitals), can you keep you alive as long as your heart pumps. That is all we need to work. Kidneys fail(dialysis), lungs fail(ventilator), ass fail(ccolostomy bag), so on, so forth. Great video! Just wanted to add that bit of information...
Well, why are you telling us that? While its a really interesting subject, I dont understand why its brought up. Did somone agured that these people are still alive and the machines should not be switsched off, despite that fact that this would be the most human thing to do?
I think this raises a lot of ethnical questions if those people are alive or dead and if they should be kept alive with machines or not.
There is a video of this on youtube:

WHere does that chicken that lived for 3 years after it's beheading fit in? Heh now THATS a freaky story..:>

A question: Why does the Lazarus reflex happen the way it does? Why does the arms position itself in that manner?
hellover9000 2 years ago
because that how the arms are wired up in the nervous system.

uh, and how does this relate to Lazarus being raised from the dead?
CapnnOrdinary 2 years ago
It's named after the biblical story because it often appears to observers as if the person is coming back to life.
antybu86 2 years ago 2
were you implying that Lazarus just had left over reflexes to sort out? or are you just using the term?
my arms shoot out at nite like that dead woman if i sleep on my back. i hate that feeling.

Holy crap, but what causes it(The last part)? Also, is the chicken suffering? What part of us feels pain?

I wont be surprised PETARDS will flag this just because of the whole chicken flopping around without a head.
ironman711 2 years ago 2
Well, I gave 'em warning at the beginning of the video. So, I guess the only reason they'd flag it is if they just want to be assholes.
antybu86 2 years ago
more likely some fundy will flag it because it has naked boobies!!

That's cool for cats. If I'm ever brain dead, I'll want my family to have some fun with me. I think I'd make a good Halloween decoration.

LOL, yeah, probably me too, especially that I didn't knew that those can occur on brain dead people.
But now we know the reason.
Thanks for the video.
