Rage is a proof of concept not a good game. It was to show how a game can be developed on 3 platforms without many changes between the versions. It's all about megatextures. WHY? Because next gen consoles will have HEAPS more VRAM and can fit HIGH RES megatextures. There is a mod for rage with HD textures for 1 town. Looks amazing, loads the same as blurry textures. The future is looking pretty
Man. If you're a true fan of the medium of videogames, you would've bought Rage. Critics didn't like it but anything this genius touches is gold in my opinion.
I thought the interviewer did a good job. He asked questions that exacted interesting answers from John. If the interviewer ruined the interview for you, then you weren't here to listen to John.
@toolblox Dumbass? He was asking informed and intelligent questions, these are exactly the kind of answers i want to hear. Yeah he's an amateur, but surely beats someone from GameSpot asking "When's Doom 5 gonna come out?"
If he's not the archetype image of the geek, I don't know who is! :)
The thing that I love is how he focuses on technology and not gimmicks and tries to(and succeeds more often than not) to move the industry forward single-handedly.
And it's just cool to listen to an intelligent guy for a change.
@MooMan5k This interviewer is just fine, he obviously doesn't know everything but he's trying to understand, he's not a big media whore such as geoff keighley and all that mainstream shit.
@MooMan5k And im an ethusiast and understand these terms, so it's not really that hard for me what carmack means, maybe stuff with raytracing is something i didn't yet researched, but i totally understand what he's saying about API low level issues on PC ... just imagine if PC GPU hardware allowed direct access.
I love the 64 processors showing up in task manager at the top right at 11:50 lol. The Xeon 7500 series are hyperthreaded 8-core processors (so each one will show up like a 16-core processor in task manager), so he's got to be using a motherboard with 4 CPU sockets. The even more insane part is that his ray tracing scene there is using about 90% of the power of all those cores haha. I'd give my right nut for that PC lol.
I loved that. The interviewer had no fucking idea what he was talking about with that first mathematics question. So he just let him talk and said "cool" at the end.
Basically, mathematics for video games is not any more complicated than what you learnt at school - geometry, algebra, etc. - but it's all about the application of it.
Realising, for example, that you can get a good enough approximation with a simpler method that runs ten times faster than the mathematically precise version.
Very good interview! The only critic I have is the way Ryan, if that's his name, keeps saying "mm" and "ok" and looking down the paper when Carmack is speaking. Even if it's not ment to be disrespectful it turns out that way, and it also gives an approach that it's only you and Carmack there, when there's actually a camera there. I can't do it better, I would probably be worse, but that was just something I noticed.
i personally have no idea what there talking about , nor do i understand pc gaming ( <------ console gamer who wants to be a pc gamer ) but i find this stuff extremely interesting .
This is a very intellectual interview. I could give two shits about the lighting and microphones. Carmack is a very smart man. He has a very dense jargon based vocabulary which makes him hard for the average Joe to understand. I got about 70-75% of what he was saying and learned a lot in only 35 MINUTES!!! Thank you for posting this PCPerspective! I listen to your podcast every week!
@DavidH373 btw, could you possibly work on getting your video podcast out faster? I mean you said Wed. that it was important to watch the video version and then you totally ignored posting it. Thank you, and no insult intended, I love you guys!
When you interview John Carmack don't respond to what he says. Just let him talk. He keeps talking forever until you come up with the next question. He's the best human in the planet
"You can't tell everybody to go out and buy lots of x86 boxes."
Except, that's exactly what he DID for Quake – at the time, only very high-end machines could run it acceptably well, and it was what pushed gamers in droves to upgrade to Pentium boxen. How times have changed...
Nice interview, overall. I don't know what all the haters are on about. Most of you wouldn't even be able to ask an interesting question, much less grasp the answer.
Yeah! That's right. But that's not the real issue here, the problem is those people called hoarders, some of'em have beautiful houses, totally livable, but they live outside in sheds, or cars, it's unbelievable that something like this can go on, without any law enforcement intervention, it takes one phone call, and things gets better, either the hoarders go to prison, or are thrown out on the streets, in my book, both of those options are a good thing, what's the issue here, really?!
Interviewer, please learn not to not say "ok", "alright", "cool" continuously while someone else is talking. Its a very annoying nervous tick for the watcher, and takes away from the interview.
Great interview. I thought the interviewer did a nice job! Asked concise interesting questions and let John Carmack finish his answers without interruption.
Regarding Infinite-Detail, Ryan is referring to Point cloud rendering by Euclideon, right?
They’ve called it infinite detail for some reason(marketing-speak?),but its still based on finite resolution, discrete geometry(64points/mm^3 from their vid)so I'm not sure John's response is relevant.
He's referring to vector/spline rendering which is resolution independent/procedural,while theirs is a discrete method that they say enables vast amounts of data to be displayed (but not infinite).
@avnertishby the idea behind UD is that the detail is not limited by the engine but by RAM, scan technology and screen resolution. Also I don't think that Carmack has really read in to what UD is, because there is no procedurally generated content in UD as far as I understand it, it's all scanned stuff.
@avnertishby they call it infinite detail because you can have a dataset of a rock of 'unlimited detail' down to an atomic level for example, and the engine can still render it because it only renders your monitor's resolution of pixels.
very informative interview! I was surprised by John's claim that most of his math knowledge is based on high-school level math. You must need a good understanding of Graduate level algebra, parts of higher calculus (series, etc.), maybe some complex analysis, in order to get these engines running so well, don't you?
Then again, maybe I just went to a crappy high-school ;)
John is such a knowledgeable guy. On top of that, he's humble. He's someone who's words should be given heavy weight in the arenas of business, gaming, and technology.

His views on "procedurally generated detail" are somewhat one-sided?
Has been used for decades, from Elite to Fuel, and Infinity and so on.
But he's also talking about instancing, which is odd.
It works great on GPU but not much of an advantage on CPU AFAIK.
And Euclideons engine runs on CPU?
