  • "itsoftware", aaaa.

    "I-Dee" Software. D:

  • Dear John, may I have some NZT-48 too, please?

  • Quake II shirt. Badass.

  • two people talkring to themselves

  • on there...

  • NextGen Minecraft would be ideal for voxels

  • Rage is a proof of concept not a good game. It was to show how a game can be developed on 3 platforms without many changes between the versions. It's all about megatextures. WHY? Because next gen consoles will have HEAPS more VRAM and can fit HIGH RES megatextures. There is a mod for rage with HD textures for 1 town. Looks amazing, loads the same as blurry textures. The future is looking pretty

  • Man. If you're a true fan of the medium of videogames, you would've bought Rage. Critics didn't like it but anything this genius touches is gold in my opinion.

  • You know Carmack is the boss man- he can go on saying stuff like "vertexes" and nobody will ever correct him.

  • @bernverdnardo1 lol so true....

  • I thought the interviewer did a good job. He asked questions that exacted interesting answers from John. If the interviewer ruined the interview for you, then you weren't here to listen to John.

  • John Carmack, y u no teach Computer Science?

  • Valaki mondja el nekem dióhéjban, hogy mi volt a véleménye a voxel grafikáról.

  • Oh...hmmm...sure...interesting

  • interviewer is a total dumbass, totally ruined it

  • @toolblox Dumbass? He was asking informed and intelligent questions, these are exactly the kind of answers i want to hear. Yeah he's an amateur, but surely beats someone from GameSpot asking "When's Doom 5 gonna come out?"

  • @batukhan He was just using buzzwords throughout.

  • I do not like that interviewer at all.

  • Hmm, haha, okay. okay, mhm, yes. Okay. Right. [blank face] Yeah [look at paper] right. [asks question] okay. okay. haha, right! yep! okay. okay. okay. okay. okay. hmm. okay. right, on the hardware. hmm, okay. right? right! yeah. ahh, right. sure. [small fake underbreath laugh], right. okay. okay okay. okay. [asks another question] right. okay. that thing yeah, right. okay. oh okay, right right. [fake laugh] right, right right okay [fake laugh] yeah [fake laugh] right ---- 0 characters remaining

  • If he's not the archetype image of the geek, I don't know who is! :)

The thing that I love is how he focuses on technology and not gimmicks and tries to(and succeeds more often than not) to move the industry forward single-handedly.

And it's just cool to listen to an intelligent guy for a change.

  • I understood all of it

  • Carmack just brain jizzed

  • No idea what he was talking about but I enjoyed listening to it :)

  • lol hes such an uber geek its just fascinating.

i like the guy, dont think much of rage though.

  • His views on "procedurally generated detail" are somewhat one-sided?

Has been used for decades, from Elite to Fuel, and Infinity and so on.

But he's also talking about instancing, which is odd.

It works great on GPU but not much of an advantage on CPU AFAIK.

And Euclideons engine runs on CPU?

  • Let him speak damn it!

  • retarted interviewer!!

  • Leave the interviewer alone, if God himself came down to explain the nature of the universe, wouldn't you be nervous and confused.

  • @MooMan5k This interviewer is just fine, he obviously doesn't know everything but he's trying to understand, he's not a big media whore such as geoff keighley and all that mainstream shit.

  • @MooMan5k And im an ethusiast and understand these terms, so it's not really that hard for me what carmack means, maybe stuff with raytracing is something i didn't yet researched, but i totally understand what he's saying about API low level issues on PC ... just imagine if PC GPU hardware allowed direct access.

  • 4:45 the interviewer got lost, says ´ok´ but he doest know what hell carmack is talking about XD.

  • He is 100000000% computer geek, nerd and gamer.

  • @loombaron i likee

  • I could listen to John all day long. Very interesting on his inside opinions of hardware, software and the balance of creativity.

  • I love the 64 processors showing up in task manager at the top right at 11:50 lol. The Xeon 7500 series are hyperthreaded 8-core processors (so each one will show up like a 16-core processor in task manager), so he's got to be using a motherboard with 4 CPU sockets. The even more insane part is that his ray tracing scene there is using about 90% of the power of all those cores haha. I'd give my right nut for that PC lol.

  • I have listened to this 6 times all the way through as of right now.

  • RON PAUL / DUKE NUKEM 2012 !!!

  • I loved that. The interviewer had no fucking idea what he was talking about with that first mathematics question. So he just let him talk and said "cool" at the end.

Basically, mathematics for video games is not any more complicated than what you learnt at school - geometry, algebra, etc. - but it's all about the application of it.

Realising, for example, that you can get a good enough approximation with a simpler method that runs ten times faster than the mathematically precise version.

  • i want carmack's shirt

  • ahahah that poor interviewer lol

  • Very good interview! The only critic I have is the way Ryan, if that's his name, keeps saying "mm" and "ok" and looking down the paper when Carmack is speaking. Even if it's not ment to be disrespectful it turns out that way, and it also gives an approach that it's only you and Carmack there, when there's actually a camera there. I can't do it better, I would probably be worse, but that was just something I noticed.

  • Awesome interview hard to keep up with Carmack though

  • The interviewer looked a little lost when Carmack mentioned things like NURBS, Voxels and Quads hehe

  • john carmack doesn't need an interviewer, just turn the crank and shut the fuck up.

  • ON THERE

  • The thing I love the most about Carmack is the fact that he doenst dumb anything down. His mind deffinently on a whole different level.

  • C'mon people, you can't give Ryan shit for not being as knee deep into this stuff as John f*ing Carmack.

  • very interresting, thx for the vid. btw, how many times does he say "on there" ??

  • The thing Im sad about is that Carmack is God but he is not immoratal :(

  • Thanks for the upload :)

  • Carmack said "ass" :O

  • @TylerSurvivors :O oh noes

  • Thanks for the video, one of the best Carmack interviews I've seen.

  • right, interesting

    interesting...

  • Good watch, thanks for the interview!

  • i personally have no idea what there talking about , nor do i understand pc gaming ( <------ console gamer who wants to be a pc gamer ) but i find this stuff extremely interesting .

  • god, why dont i have any friends that smart!

  • @thepermman Because people that smart don't have friends, they have colleagues. ;)

  • @DavidH373 btw, could you possibly work on getting your video podcast out faster? I mean you said Wed. that it was important to watch the video version and then you totally ignored posting it. Thank you, and no insult intended, I love you guys!

  • What kind of microphones did you use? The audio sounds like ass mixed with garbage. Please let me know the make/model of the mics. Thank you.

  • Thanks PCPer. I could listen to a J. Carmack podcast all day long if it were out there. Love to read all his reviews.

You guys are doing great productions. Great video quality. My only comment is that you consider getting come lighting tools like a bouncing board.

    Thanks guys for this. Brilliant!

  • That reporter is really annoying.

  • @SleepyOne84 never mind, your right

  • Navier-Stokes equations, turbullent flows... Mmmm... Sexyyy... ^_^

  • I want a Quake 2 shirt. :(

  • I went half way through, and then I realised : I don't understand a single word ^^

  • TL;DW

    PC Master race.

  • Great job on the interview though. Carmacks always a fascinating guy to listen to.

  • That guys looks and sounds absolutely lost by Carmacks explanations.

  • so.. if we extraced carmack's brain to a hard drive.... how many zettabytes of data will that take up?

  • Such an amazing individual. He says so much, but every word has such incredible value!

  • he should write a book

  • 29:15 64bit only tools

  • Comment removed

  • ok i only understood basic english there such as "and, He, did, power ect" aparts from that i have no clue of wat he is going on about but cool.

  • Very nice interview here. John Carmack knows his stuff.

  • The next Stephen Hawking right there.

  • This was a very interesting interview.

  • I love watching interviews with John Carmack. I want his brain

  • I loved the interview! I just wish it wasn't done in the what appears to look like the middle of a busy, and rather noisy hotel lobby.

  • Brilliant interview!

  • Steam version of R.A.G.E gets Cloud saving!! PC!!!!!

  • 30:10 : id and bethesda sound pretty close, which to me is great for gamers..

I mean.. just IMAGINE an elder scrolls game with an engine made by mr. carmack. Heads would explode.

  • I love this interview. This is culture.

  • "You can't tell everybody to go out and buy lots of x86 boxes."

Except, that's exactly what he DID for Quake – at the time, only very high-end machines could run it acceptably well, and it was what pushed gamers in droves to upgrade to Pentium boxen. How times have changed...

  • Nice interview, overall. I don't know what all the haters are on about. Most of you wouldn't even be able to ask an interesting question, much less grasp the answer.

  • John Carmack said that raytracing will win. Nvidia stock falls down 20%.

  • That interviewers mind literally melted. He had no clue what was happening.

  • Video is icing, sound is the heart of the interview and its perfect. Thanks for posting!

  • Epic man

  • Yeah! That's right. But that's not the real issue here, the problem is those people called hoarders, some of'em have beautiful houses, totally livable, but they live outside in sheds, or cars, it's unbelievable that something like this can go on, without any law enforcement intervention, it takes one phone call, and things gets better, either the hoarders go to prison, or are thrown out on the streets, in my book, both of those options are a good thing, what's the issue here, really?!

  • noooo it ended :*( well he sold rage, but at the same time didnt sell rage lol, the guy truly seems to love his art

  • I think my brain just exploded.... awesome!

  • Carmack brain dumps.... needs decompression....

  • STAY SILENT WHILE THE GOD SPEAKS

  • i wanna ask him about power pc recompile to x86

all consoles ppc and most pc problem is cpu like gta 4 and ....

need 4 cores to run smoothly without min fps

  • OMG shut up interviewer with your Oks, yes, cool, you -.-

  • @xXxDiukexXx

It's ok, thats what happens when you get married :P

  • @xXxDiukexXx right right

    hmm

    hmmm

  • Carmack is a hero.

  • Interviewer, please learn not to not say "ok", "alright", "cool" continuously while someone else is talking. Its a very annoying nervous tick for the watcher, and takes away from the interview.

  • @jamberi Ok cool,

  • Great interview. I thought the interviewer did a nice job! Asked concise interesting questions and let John Carmack finish his answers without interruption.

  • Great interview, thanks a lot for doing it. Always awesome to hear Carmack talk about, well, just about anything.

  • Regarding Infinite-Detail, Ryan is referring to Point cloud rendering by Euclideon, right?

They’ve called it infinite detail for some reason(marketing-speak?),but its still based on finite resolution, discrete geometry(64points/mm^3 from their vid)so I'm not sure John's response is relevant.

He's referring to vector/spline rendering which is resolution independent/procedural,while theirs is a discrete method that they say enables vast amounts of data to be displayed (but not infinite).

    am I wrong?

  • @avnertishby the idea behind UD is that the detail is not limited by the engine but by RAM, scan technology and screen resolution. Also I don't think that Carmack has really read in to what UD is, because there is no procedurally generated content in UD as far as I understand it, it's all scanned stuff.

  • @roytri So UD is more or less the same as current engines then. Throw enough RAM and CPU power at idTech4 you will have "unlimited" detail too.

  • @avnertishby they call it infinite detail because you can have a dataset of a rock of 'unlimited detail' down to an atomic level for example, and the engine can still render it because it only renders your monitor's resolution of pixels.

  • very informative interview! I was surprised by John's claim that most of his math knowledge is based on high-school level math. You must need a good understanding of Graduate level algebra, parts of higher calculus (series, etc.), maybe some complex analysis, in order to get these engines running so well, don't you?

Then again, maybe I just went to a crappy high-school ;)

  • @avnertishby calculus hasn't got much to do with engine technology, linear algebra is where it's at!

  • 1.5 Gigawatts!!!!

  • I'm not even going to pretend to understand what the hell Carmack just said.

  • I love that JC is wearing a QII t-shirt:D

  • interviewer is CG Mark Zuckerberg.

  • John is such a knowledgeable guy. On top of that, he's humble. He's someone who's words should be given heavy weight in the arenas of business, gaming, and technology.

  • John Carmack could be talking about how he would do my mom and i would still listen.

  • Can't wait until he gets his robot legs. That's gonna be so cool.

  • it would be a 2h interview if he just let Carmack talk

  • Legend

  • I could listen to Carmack, all day.

  • @ttwilightzzone best nerd in the world

  • @ttwilightzzone

Carmacks voice and speeches cures the agressive part of my ADD

  • @ttwilightzzone

ya I know, but he can also talk all day!

  • I have no idea what the fuck he's talking about (most of the time), but I listened to all 32 minutes of it.

  • I'm as clueless as the interviewer lol

  • Mm hmm... mm hmm... right.... yeah....

  • The interviewer seems understandably clueless during some of the deeper tech explanations.

  • @ssdwellah Well...yes. :D

  • @pcper "with monte carlo iterative methods" "hmm... oh..." hahahah

  • @pcper okay... right...

  • @pcper lol a hard job you have there buddy.

  • @ssdwellah +1. Excellent interview with God of 3D graphics, but the interviewer is totally clueless to even appreciate who he is talking to.

  • @ssdwellah Yeah, and good thing too. Who'd watch it if the interviewer would understand the deeper tech explanations? :>

  • @ssdwellah I don't agree actually, he seems to know his shit as well, obviously not nearly as much as Carmack.

  • ... The interviewer kinda looks like CG here. Also, a bit uncanny valleyish. Is it just me? It's the lightning making the skin look plasticky.

  • @Naeddyr We did have VERY poor lighting for this and tried to fix it in post - these are the results.

Although this is the first time I have even been called CG. Ha!
