Carriage horses should go out to green pastures at farms! They can NOT be in the middle of NEW YORK CITY where they are surrounded by traffic and big buildings!

by doing this you are destroying an industry and bankrupting families, theres an oppurtunity cost here, the horses have exersise and a place to live and owners that actually care about there horses, look at a bigger issue instead of focusing on a small issue for example sheep, they are starved and froze to produce fine wool
Ugh finally someone is doing something about this. For my birthday a few years ago my parents thought they would surprise me with a ride on a horse carriage after dinner and I refused. They tried to tell me that horses enjoyed walking around and were able to handle doing this kind of labour. This is disgusting and I will never understand how people can stand to treat animals this way, taking them out of their natural habitat and forcing them to do this...heartless people

These "stables" are probably abandoned houses that illegal immagrants put horses in to make money off of. If this was how every horse was housed, it would seem to me that horse drawn carriages would be illegal...Just pointing out, not all of these are bad. I've seen on animal cops Houston that it's the law to stable the horses when the weather gets bad, or too hot or cold for work. I consider myself a horse lover. I am against the inappropriate stabling for these horses, but I am not necessarily against the work itself. Most of the horses I see are happier when they have a job. But the horses that are working should be taken care of appropriately.

Just a note: horses don't sleep lying down. If they lay down for too long they can't breath properly. Also, horses are perfectly fine in stalls. And thirdly, the hay is what they eat, therefore it needs to be in the barn.

@KallyMacDuff You're being very selective in what you took away from this video. The problem is not that they're in stalls, but that they're in small, unsafe, unhealthy stalls. The problem isn't that they have hay, it's that if a fire started in those multi-story "barns", the hay would cause the fire to spread more rapidly, a double whammy because the horses have no means of escape from a 2nd or 3rd floor. Stop trying to justify horrible treatment.

The hay is probably, from the looks of the video, infested with the horse's own waste. My family raises horses in MD and participates in World Wide competitions. Horses and animals in general do not belong in highly populated urban areas. These types of conditions can give rise to cross species transfer of pathogens; the manner in which SARS and HUS secondary to E. coli infected humans killing many children and adults. Even if you could care less about animals this situaton is CLEARLY not beneficial to horses or humans.

While these horses should truly have more room in their stables to at least turn around, it is important to note that horses do not actually sleep lying down.. in fact, the one time they usually lie down is while giving birth, and foals (baby horses) stand up and start walking around within a few hours of being born. I love horses and I have three. I am absolutely all for making sure horses have humane living and working environments, but the fact that they don't lie down to sleep is important.

Besides the horrible conditions the horses face, I think the novelty of horse drawn rides is over, and New Yorkers would love it if the horses were not there, whether it is because they are mistreated, or that they pose a danger to themselves and traffic. I'd rather see the horses running around in NC or KY, free.
Humans are so selfish that they always try to exploit other animals and show no concern toward them. Say no to horse carriages, and help save those innocent lives from suffering.
Horse-drawn carriages in New York are a stupid idea, horses are not meant to be in the city. It would be understandable if they were in other states where horses are more common and if they were in their natural environment with plenty of grass, trees, and nature and if had decent stables with plenty of food and if they were taken care of medically and emotionally. Then, I wouldn't see a problem with them pulling carriages with people in them as long as they are comfortable and not over-worked.

She plays a character in glee whose persona is intentionally meant to be annoying, so in fact you are paying her a compliment by stating that she is doing a good job. I am not a TV fan, but her voice is one of the best I have ever heard ( almost instrumental), and I come from a long line of musicians playing classical guitar myself. She is a breath of fresh air amidst a sea of no talent drugged up stars. She is very poised in how she presents her message and well spoken.

Just a note: horses don't sleep lying down. If they lay down for too long they can't breath properly. Also, horses are perfectly fine in stalls. And thirdly, the hay is what they eat, therefore it needs to be in the barn.

@KallyMacDuff You're being very selective in what you took away from this video. The problem is not that they're in stalls, but that they're in small, unsafe, unhealthy stalls. The problem isn't that they have hay, it's that if a fire started in those multi-story "barns", the hay would cause the fire to spread more rapidly, a double whammy because the horses have no means of escape from a 2nd or 3rd floor. Stop trying to justify horrible treatment.

@KallyMacDuff They are being made to walk around in their own waste. They are expected to stay in stalls in which they can't turn around. The hay is probably, from the looks of the video, infested with the horse's own waste. You are probably one of those people who can leave a dog tied out to tree all day long and think, "Well, it's not human, therefore it's fine." Animals think, feel, love, play, get scared, and need at least the basics of what humans need. You didn't know that? "Duh."

I have been to NYC multiple times, and see these poor horses everywhere, but never really stopped to think about where these horses go when the day is done.
Lea did a great job, you can tell she truely cares!
I will never ride in one of those carriages!

My family raises horses in MD and participates in World Wide competitions. Horses and animals in general do not belong in highly populated urban areas. These types of conditions can give rise to cross species transfer of pathogens; the manner in which SARS and HUS secondary to E. coli infected humans killing many children and adults. Even if you could care less about animals this situaton is CLEARLY not beneficial to horses or humans.

@sparksandspirit Well said. I am, and not all these carriage horses look to be starved or neglected. Some actually look to be enjoying what they do. For if they did not have their job, they would probably be hamburger. One who has no idea what it takes to care for a horse has no reason to agree totally with what this video is showing, for it is only going to show what they want you to see.

question about 0:57 ....horses sleep standing up. so if they embellished that, what else did they embellish about the treatment of horses? This honestly doesn't seem like cruel conditions. Sure, we, as humans, wouldn't want to do this all day (but, for the record, there are many humans in the US that do backbreaking work all day and go home to a small tenements/projects with barely any food or trappings), but I'm not so sure a horse knows or cares what it's doing.

It is sad how blind I have been, I did not know anything about this but I should have known that being in traffic all day can not be good for horses, let alone the rest of what Lea mentioned. It is a shame. Thanks for opening my eyes Lea!

While these horses should truly have more room in their stables to at least turn around, it is important to note that horses do not actually sleep lying down.. in fact, the one time they usually lie down is while giving birth, and foals (baby horses) stand up and start walking around within a few hours of being born. I love horses and I have three. I am absolutely all for making sure horses have humane living and working environments, but the fact that they don't lie down to sleep is important.

Besides the horrible conditions the horses face, I think the novelty of horse drawn rides is over, and New Yorkers would love it if the horses were not there, whether it is because they are mistreated, or that they pose a danger to themselves and traffic. I'd rather see the horses running around in NC or KY, free.

Horse-drawn carriages in New York are a stupid idea, horses are not meant to be in the city. It would be understandable if they were in other states where horses are more common and if they were in their natural environment with plenty of grass, trees, and nature and if had decent stables with plenty of food and if they were taken care of medically and emotionally. Then, I wouldn't see a problem with them pulling carriages with people in them as long as they are comfortable and not over-worked.

She plays a character in glee whose persona is intentionally meant to be annoying, so in fact you are paying her a compliment by stating that she is doing a good job. I am not a TV fan, but her voice is one of the best I have ever heard ( almost instrumental), and I come from a long line of musicians playing classical guitar myself. She is a breath of fresh air amidst a sea of no talent drugged up stars. She is very poised in how she presents her message and well spoken.
