A great peice of film featuring lovely Linda, looks like Allan Garraway whose driving (as usual) and its such a nice day he's left his oilskins at home!
Thanks for posting this historic film. We had our first trip on the FR in 1967, behind Blanche, so we too only went to TYB. Been a member since '77 and always loved it. Last time went up in the refurb'ed coach 100. WOW!
Is this "Earl of Merioneth" the same that works on the Ffestiniog today? If so, the railway's website dates "Earl of Merioneth's" build date to 1979, which would seemingly make a 1968 date for this film impossible unless there was a previous "Earl of Merioneth" I'm not aware of.
If the engine in this video is today's "Earl of Merioneth", I say it's looking better in this form than now with it's boxy tanks, which I never liked the look of, though I live in the US and have have only seen photos.
Hi, thanks for asking. The engine is Livingston Thompson built by the Festiniog Railway Company in 1886 at Boston Lodge. It was renamed Tailiesin after the original single Fairlie in 1932 and Earl of Merioneth from 1961 to 1979 when withdrawn from service and replaced by the current Earl of Merioneth. Livingston Thompson is now on static display in the National Railway Museum, York.
The driver on Earl of Merioneth (at 2'55") is Evan Evans who lived at the cottages by Penrhyn station level crossing. He was its regular driver for years and well known for pushing the old lady's speed, especially down the grade between Penrhyn and Minfordd.
Here,in California,we have them either way smaller or way bigger.Griffith Park has ones about a tenth that size(rideable). And the L.A. County Fairgrounds has one that weighs 1,200,000 pounds(just sits there).

Glad you enjoyed it. My late Grandad Ken, who did the filming would be really pleased.

Driver on Earl of Merioneth (at 2'55") is the infamous Evan Evans who could make a double Fairlie go faster than anyone else.
