I am not the mutton head to whom you refer, but I uploaded this and I disagree. Not the same subject material. The Smith's just whined because they felt sorry for themselves. Good band but not on the level of REM. Not even fair to compare them because the styles vary so completely. Sorry m8.
@Circumpumk, stevepwood, and johnny10301968. great comments guys, very sad to see the split of this fine musical institution. Murmur has to be one of my fav's along with Life's Rich Pageant. Eponymous was a tremendous compilation. Fables of the reconstruction is a MUST.
I total agreement this version of Radio Free Europe is much better.
The IRS years of REM is some of the best music ever....in my mind, I put them up there with Led Zeppelin and the Beatles (my other two favorite bands).
@Circumpunk I am Wahi', and I am of mostly Apache descent. Wahi' and the Natives Have Spoken is my musical group, mostly rock. Google Wahi' and the Natives Have Spoken and FB me/us. The music link is way too long to type, so google is easier.
This song and "radio song" are my favorites because even though they were great melodies/lyrics, they never got "over-popular"-- not like (loosing my religion) which was played to death in pop radio. So much so that I never search it here on you tube
@smith6510 They lost their compass after Bill got sick. Sometimes one has to overlook ideologies and go with the sound. They remained viable for years with drum machines, but in concert they had live drummers and it was almost as hot as the original. This is my favorite band, ever. Proud you enjoyed it.
Thanks for posting the "better version" of this song! I honestly believe that if the band had used this version to do a music video, not only would they have had a bigger hit, but they may have achieved the kind of succes and recognition they deserved like they did in the late 80's or perhaps even the early 90's. When you've got a great song in your hands, and you're just starting out, creating the best version, make the best impression, in an industry where first impressions can make u a legend
@Hotnycguy You are welcome. I liked them before the videos and marketing crowd got hold of them. At that point they lost control of things. Then the Druimmer Bill Berry got sick and left the band. I think that's when the lost popularity.
@badoocee Thank you my friend, I agree with your assessment of this version. The whole damn album is superb to me, not to mention nostalgic in these days.
Awesome song.

@johnny10301968 Thanks for your kind comment johnny. I really think eponymous was their best album, although I like 'em all. Especially Document.

REM got politically obvious at "Green," before B.B.'s illness. Despite the "look at me now-ness," REM is my favorite band of all time! Wahi'

@nativesspoken Natives of where? I consider myself a "world citizen" ; ))
Shake my family tree a bit and a Cherokee and a Creek might fall out.
So does this Wahi' nation have a link? I mean what is the title of the Wiki page? I am stoopid sometimes.
