rockgor, please tell me more about this Don Carlo performance. To correct you though, hines was 70 at that time and Siepi 68. But I have never heard of this performance and so, give me more, give me more. I truly envy you for having experienced two of the five greatest basses of all time in one evening.
i heard them both many times, including this combo. the best were ghiarov as phillip and the indescribable voice of paul schoeffler (at age 70). schoeffler without a doubt had the greaest low male voice of singer in the world at the time. bjoerling was not too small!! whoever says that was not there vor the live pervormances!! he was fantastic.
I saw Siepi and Hines in Don Carlo in Long Beach California. It was about 1991. I think Siepi was 68 and Hines 2 years younger. They both sounded great.
Siepi was so skinny he almost looked anorexic.
Hines towered over everybody.
The tenor was Dennis O'Neill from Wales. A great voice. Sadly he did not make many recordings until he had developed a bad wobble.
Wish a Cd of same would magically appear. Thanks, Primo.
wow.....just wow. I woulda killed to see this production. Siepi AND Merrill, not to mention Jussi and Hines "rounding it out" Who was the Prima Diva. IF you say Tebaldi I'm going to cry haha
oooo, sounds like another good one. I have a live Don Carlo with Siepi, Bastianini, LoFrorese, Cerquetti, and Barbieri as well. And it has a couple extra tracks of Bastianini singing a couple of Arias.
how can i get my hands on this recording you have on youtube???
@primobaritono : also 1952 from the MET Tucker, Rigal, Barbieri, Silveri and the real surprise Hines as the king and the legendary HANS HOTTER as the inquisitor u can imagine this duetto between them
Man, do I love this performance. Siepi just dominates Hines. :) Respect to both, but there's just never been anyone like Siepi. Love your catalogue, primobaritono.
However, if I were to name a few of the best basses in the past century, then they'd be on the list. And luckily, there is room for both Hines and Siepi in the universe.
I first met Jerome Hines in 1978 as a young singer while he was making the circuit splitting his time singing gospel music, teaching master claases and still performing at the Met. I ran into him several more times until he went home to his reward a few years back. Truly a great man who was an inspiration to the thousands of lives he touched. Hearing his amazing voice again in these recordings brings tears to my eyes and I still miss him greatly.
I heard Hines very late in his life singing exerpts from 'Boris" in Minneapolis, at the University of Minnesota. His voice was still beautiful. I can't imagine what it was like in his prime. Unfortunately, I was never able to hear the great Italian live. Is this from a recording that is still availalbe?
Beautiful singing by these great basses at so young an age! I want to give a copy of this to my sister who leaves for St. Petersburg soon. The Russians love the bass voice as it speaks with power and authority. My docs tell me its darkest resonance is particularly good for BP.
No...you're not thick. BP stands for blood pressure. Doctors have been experimenting with relaxation techniques that involve humming in one's lowest voice...slowly and repetitively for 5 or 10 minutes several times a day but esp. when a patient feels their BP rising! The bass voice produces the greatest results so it seems. Of course most monks knew this some time back.
Hummmmm, very interesting. I am a bass-baritone and I noticed long ago that if I hum a low note it makes my eyes vibrate (most noticable when looking at the TV or a computer screen)!
That's incredible! My eyes are synced to the pulse taken at my wrist. I mean the pupils can be seen to "beat" in sync with my wrist pulse. Docs tell me it's very odd since my heartbeat is totally irregular: chronic congenital atrial fibrillation. I wonder what your EKG would show if it was recorded while you sang? Ditto your BP? But I mis-spoke slightly when I said "a patient feels their BP rising!" That's not totally accurate since most people don't feel much when their BP rises.
THANK YOU so much for this post! I agree. Best duet team ever. Ghiaurov and Talvela is nothing compared to this though Talvela is brilliant also. But my jaw dropped to floor when I started to listen this.Incredible...
What a pair. Siepi smooth, richly rolling and beautiful; Hines a force of nature. And to think that particularly as basses go, they were babies here!
Since Hines was my mentor I am very familiar with this. They were both young men here. Hines was 29 and his voice would go on to mature a lot more. Siepi with his singing bass sounded very much here the way he did the rest of his life. This is still my favorite duet team for this duet.
SIEPI , THE BEST IN THE WORLD !!!
Il più grande basso al mondo.
Irripetibile!!

Two titans! :) Wonderful!

I took some lessons from Mr. Hines when he was in his seventies. He still had a voice like a house. He continued to study and learn to the end.

la mejor parte de don carlo y una de las mejores de la opera.
su mensaje politico y religioso es eficaz y espinoso.
y las interpretaciones estan excelentes.

This is very fine, but I prefer the rendition of Boris Christoff and Giulio Neri. Try it, you'll like it!

Unfortunately no. Della Rigal was Elisabetta I believe and Fedora Barbieri was Eboli.
There's another splendid Met Don Carlo from 1956 I believe with Hines as Phillip, Eleanor Steber, Richard Tucker and Ettore Bastianini.
