Great phrasing, beautiful voice, great ears ;-), faultless intonation, simply wonderful!. I agree with PENNSY671E. "One of the best female jazz vocalists ever ..."
Oh what a wonderful husky voice! She's fantastic! Restrained power and clear enunciation. And I love the way she pronounces "go" , "blow" and "aglow". What a girl! What a discovery! Thanks for posting this!
Totally!...You couldn't have put it better. i strongly recommend you to access Amazon and get her "Something Cool" recording. She recorded this album twice, same songs, same arrangements, slightly changed personnel. First it was in mono, and years later, in stereo when it came along. Both LPs are now comprised in one single CD. Superb orchestra with superb arrangements and conducted by great Pete Rugolo, one of Kenton's (and anyone's) best arrangers.
@casch0101 Many thanks for your information, I ordered already.I am really knocked out by June Christy, she has a magic combination of qualities. Watching this leaves me smiling broadly with pleasure and a pleasant tingling sensation all over. She just makes me feel really good! How wholesome she is ... and I mean that as a great compliment. I'd like to climb into that clip, give her a hug and kiss and tell her how lovely she is! Sadly, she passed on in 1990 - she's singing for the angels now.
If there ever was a moment to show us that Jazz of our times is dead!@! We are gonna have to Breath in the beauty of that age and make it our own in this time, cause there ain't no goin back.
I love the tone of her voice. I have a double CD of hers called "Something Cool."...That is one of my favorit e songs. Don't you just love visual story songs like that. She was considered West Coast Jazz, but after listening to all the songs on this double CD, I think she was more of a pop or standard (as in the great standard songs) vocalist than Jazz.
I remember hearing her sing I'll Remember April with Kenton at Symphony Hall Boston in the late 40's and have tried to find a recording of it ever since.
You can learn about the Ernie Filice quartet easy enough with a Google. Accordion/guitar/clarinet, where have I heard that before? Oh yeah, Chris Connor's first EP, of all things. What a great sound, and thanks for letting us hear these sounds of that lineup behind another of Kenton's canaries.
Wow June is so good......different when she was young....Always loved her, but her vocie is different. Wonderful and the group behind her amazing. Thanks so much ....love the Misty, Miss Christy...I believe STan Kenton called. her.....
I clicked on this to see June but I am totally blown away with the accompaniment, they are so in tune with each other, almost making June's vocal secondary. Singers---including myself---search forever to find great musicians like The Ernie Filice Quartet---but would not it be a Quintet as there are 5 in the group? This qunitet is rocking even before June starts to sing. Thanks a million for posting.
She's heavenly. I prefer her voice in the early years I think. Although it's always marvelous. It's cleaner. I bet she smoked! That destroyed a lot of lives, a lot of great voices too.
Perfectly swinging, fantastic voice, gorgeous woman, the loveliest smile. Simply: I fell in love with this kind of music and this most beautiful lovely woman. So bad, it's already long ago.
A unique talent and very underrated. Listen to "Something Cool" and you'll have your socks blown off. Girl-next-door gorgeous, like Doris Day's sister, if you know what I mean.
She looks so plain and pretty, but she sounds so incredibly hip. When I finally got to see her on this video, I was so shocked. It was like if Mrs. Brady, from the brady bunch family decided to be an awesome Jazz vocalist.
Very good, but her voice is yet to achieve that richness, depth, and sensuality she would later develop. Just hear 'Do It Again', and you'll see what I mean (particularly the last part!)
Real American jazz, the basic stuff, none of that drug-fueled be-bop of the era. The song was co-written by Cole Porter's first cousin, Ted Fetter. Ted Fetter married a Frenchwoman and adopted her son, Patrick Pleven, who later became a prominent TV director and producer, and finally NYC Film Commission head.
Jazz accordion is something that has waned in recent years but was once popular, especially as a solo instrument in lounges and restaurants, and often with dance bands. Today it's often thought of as being cheezy, but is actually quite a difficult instrument to handle and master. It works well in small ensemble as part of a rhythm section. I've always loved it and wish there were more young people taking it up.
I was fortunate enough to be at her outing with Kenton in 1945 and was, at once, her number one fan. Through all the good and bad years she remained terrific, tasteful and talented.
It's interesting to note that the arrangement starts out in the Key of A, then after she sings the bridge, they modulate to the Key of Ab, then after the solos' she sings the tune out in Ab, and then after the bridge the band again changes Key , down another half step to the Key of G , where the song ends!!
What a cool arrangement!
June's singing is stellar along such great females vocalists as Julie London, Diana Shore, and Rosemary Clooney.
June had a very distinctive voice, unmistakeable from the beginning to the end of her career. She had a fine ability to improvise and had huge 'ears'...the young folks who are singing like this today can't give it away and the talentless win with vulgarity. It's a pity that the culture has declined so.
Think about the downfall of popular music in the past sixty years or so. Now we have American Idol types with passable voices who rely on power and annoying vibrato to get themselves across, lacking all subtlety. Or worse, we have hacks like Madonna or Britney Spears and so forth who rely on studio trickery to fool people into thinking that they can sing, which they can't. Imagine them fronting an acoustic ensemble and trying to tackle some jazz standards. THAT would be painful.
for me, it's always been between anita o'day and miss christy. june doesn't flat her notes in the artful way that o'day does but she's still pretty groovy, in the best sense of that word.
Dotdadee nailed it. What incredible musicianship from one of the jazz immortals. This is one of the finest things I've ever seen or heard from June Christy. Too bad Mr. Snader lost his company on a morals charge - perhaps we'd have had more of these Telescriptions to keep the flame of classic pop and jazz alive a little longer in our own time. Thanks for posting!
How many contemporary singers do you think could catch the modulations of key at 00:53, 2:34, and then at 2:53? Maybe uh, ZERO? June Christy was musically INCREDIBLE!JUST Beautiful! Oh, and if your an aspiring singer, I suggest you try singing this song EXACTLY like this video and see if YOU can make those modulations. Practice your sight singing!
My current favorite clip on YouTube. June Christy make my heart melt, so nice that she was captured on video. Thanks so much for posting this.
Regarding the accordion (which has received some questionable comments), I think it works beautifully in this ensemble. When he's comping the chord voicings he's using make it sound almost like a big band sax section. Regardless, he swings, and that's the most important part.
Love this performance. Curiously, the Ernie Filice quartet has 5 pieces - a bonus. Love the Bop inspired solo on the piano. Did anyone identify the piano player yet?
What a great clip! great song, June Christy is wonderful and I love what she does with it-the group is a bit corny but swings well and backs her admirably. She's cute as a bug too! Awesome!
