Lina Romay was super-talented. Great singer, tremendous sense of presence, a natural before the camera (as we can see here) and wore clothes gorgeously. Also a very good dancer. Known as a complete professional. Chaos ensued in later years when a personality of questionable repute adopted the name Lina Romay,
@waynebrasler lina was the girl singer on the bing crosby philco radio show, around '46 & '47. btw, i looked at the next table one night at the chateu madrid in new york in '64 and whaddya know, i gasped to my date "that's xavier cugat! wish i had his autograph, but he deserved to be with his friends away from autograph seekers. lina could really sing; i recall " loveon a greyhound bus"
I LOVE THIS NUMBER ! Lena Romay----stunner !! Actually , Stage Door Canteen is a great picture altogether, I have it ! I will try and post the whole thing on YT soon !
Li na romay is amazing...I just saw her do a number with Cugat's band in the movie"Bathing Beauty> with Esther Williams.
Lina is gorgeous and if you check out her bio on " glamou girlsof the silver screen" you will see that she dated a ton of big stars before getting hitched.
This music will come back in style for those who miss it and for those who will discover it for the first time, mostly the youth. Classy times then but now people wear jeans to a wedding.
The Bongo King, Rogelio Darias, has passed at the age of 93
His passing is a great loss not only to the Cuban community, but to the entertainment family as a whole.
A native of Santa Clara, Cuba and classified by Leonardo Acosta as "one of the first to play tumbadoras on a stand, with illuminated engineering," was destined to spread the bongó gospel to Las Vegas in the 1960s.
@TheMusicuba Irish americana y pregunte a Cugat que porque se llevaban tan mal los dos-hace años- me dijo que se habia exagerado y q Lina era un poco 'especial'
About 30 years ago, when I was a kid, I remember watching this lovely woman sing this song on Abbott and Costello that came on every Sunday in New York after my family and I returned from mass.
The unique sound, the arrangements of Xavier Cugat has made the latin music popular worldwide. But some of the singers, like the extremely talanted Lina Romay, are unfortunately uderrated.
Id meet Xavi Cugat in Barcelona many years before his death ...never spoke of Lina Romay..always of Abbe and mother ...Lina was half Irish a natural seducer and a big carachter
Cugat's family emigrated to Cuba when he was five. He trained as a classical violinist and played with the Orchestra of the Teatro Nacional in Havana. Cugat moved to New York somewhere between 1915 and 1918.
I swear Katharine Hepburn is sitting in the bottom row on the far right as part of the chorus.......so hard to tell....and I know she didn't sing, but STILL ! It LOOKS like her to me !
She's a Bombshell From Brooklyn.. Wow, what a video! This was put together perfectly. Lina Romay is amazing. And the song has an uplifting melody to it. I already lost count of how many times I've watched this. Thanks!
I love this short piece featuring Lina Romay. Thanks tons for posting it! (check out my own L.R. posts). This great number is featured on the motion picture Stagedoor Canteen.
Xavier was a class act and an absolutely terrific orchestra leader. The "Bombshell from Brooklyn" is the epitome of style and grace. And what can one say about Lina Romay, except that she brought her beauty and talent to the music. They don't come any better.
Hooray for Hollywood, Xavier Cugat, and of course Lovely Lina Romay. What fun.
