Despite popular belief, DNA testing shows that the Normans were actually a mix of Celtic and Nordic tribes, too. Also the Saxons mostly came from Northern Germany, not Scandinavia, and although they me be distant cousins of the Vikings, they have nothing to do with them. Your "Saxon" Dad is most likely a large mix of Celtic/Anglo-Saxon/Nordic/Norman, as he's from Britain I'm guessing.

The Vikings were Norse and the Norse were north Germanic and a vast majority of the barbarians that invaded Rome were west and east Germanic meaning they have common heritage and similar language. Its a common misconception that the Vikings were a people. They weren't. They were raiders. Viking Metal should really be called Norse Metal... But Viking metal sounds 10x cooler.

Regardless, the Norse were not a homogenous people and nation, but much like the Celts were a diverse group of tribes and peoples.

They accomplished much. Christianity stole a lot of culture from them. They were able to sail cloudy seas with a stone that guided the way. They were able to invade many countries succesfully. Boats were amazingly built made a colony in the United states. I can go on about everything they accomplished. Almost every religion out there has stole some kind of tradition from pagan European and Christianity has the most.
It's funny how we e.g. celebrated Christmas before Christianity came in. I'm a proud Norwegian, and we celebrate Christmas on the 24th of December. I wouldn't want to blame Christians because they're not evil, their belief system is just so seriously flawed. @berserkur19 actually it comes from the Old norse masculine noun vikingr. I was mistaken in my post, it's been several years since I did any studying on Old Norse. However, the term vikingr refers to an activity and those that participated in it rather than any ethnic or cultural group.

According to Jan Terje Faarlund's "The Syntax of Old Norse" and many other sources, both the feminine "viking" and the mascualine "vikingr" refer to essentially the same thing, merely from differing perspectives. Viking refers to an expedition overseas, whereas Vikingr refers to the seaman or warrior involved in said expedition. Regardless, the Norse were not a homogenous people and nation, but much like the Celts were a diverse group of tribes and peoples.

It's funny how we e.g. celebrated Christmas before Christianity came in. I'm a proud Norwegian, and we celebrate Christmas on the 24th of December. The Christians tried implementing Christianity by overshadowing our older traditions and renaming them. First of all, vikings didn't get converted. Farmers were either forced into Christianity or killed (and got their families killed and farms burnt). That's how they got "converted".

only islam really causes war and terrorism these days. there are many religions but they are shadows of the true religion of christianity. Christianity has never started a war exept in self defence.

@potetgutten Most of researching is possible by money provided by big powers. If you see one-god-religions as a political way, it was the only path to join people and control them. So -and I hate religion-, that was the one way to build a nation.
Don't lie yourselves. I love pagan culture and the courage of barbarian people at the end of ancient ages and dark ages, but they forsake their old gods and embrace new god for having domination.

I am by no means a fan of what Christianity stands for, but it's definately a bit far to say that it has stopped civilization from evolving. And your comments among the highest rated? Anti-Christians you've gone too far.

Look how many people "god" enslaved. Look how many people "god" killed because they beleived in a different made up god or not one @ all.
