I didnt know this was Harry Nilsons, Im Australian and we all know it as a hit for a well known singer here called John Farnham, if you like this compare with "Johnny Farnham One"
It should be noted that this version is from "Aerial Pandemonium Ballet" (1971), which means that it's a remix of the original version from "Aerial Ballet" (1968). The bassline comes in later on the original, and there is less instrumentation. Also, this fades out, while the other doesn't. It sounds trivial, but it's a huge difference if you listen. I haven't heard this particular version in such great quality, though. Thanks!
The "beep, beep, beep" is a BUSY signal. He was attempting to make a call and his party was not available. He sat there and WROTE the song, all the while listening to the 'busy signal' in the background ...
Harry, was a musical genius, who's full talent, unfortunately was never realized.
The documentary (HIGHLY recommended - NETFLIX) cleary explains that either you knew who he was and what he brought, or you are entirely clueless ...
I made a video reply to see if I can. It'll only let me reply with one I uploaded, & only some of them. I've no clue how that works. Fortunately, i uploaded most all of Harry's post 1974 mat'l, because it wasn't here. I chose "Thursday' for comparison to show much his voice degraded after Lennon had him screaming with a fever on Pussy cats until his vocal chords ruptured. His range was much reduced, his voice cracks, bu it doesn't matter. He knew how to use what he had left to best advantage.
The song just before "One" is part of the story - it tells about a guy who is famous and 'everbody calls his name' and then he becomes unfashionable and he knows everybody by name. I would love to hear that song again. Nobody else plays it.
@sedaray dude, just search on 'Harry Nilsson Mr. Richland's Favorite Song.' You'd probably like the version from his live BBC special, because he quotes a big portion of one in it. The studio version(s) are on here too. There are 2 slightly different studio versions, one that references One and one that doesn't. LOL. I so far can only find the first one. I'll upload the 2nd version.
i heard he made this song when someone hung up on his phone and he was alone and the phone went beep beep beep beep that you can hear in the background
@samuraisam100 True story. My neighbor used to party with Harry and the Beatles in the recording studio, and told me that this is true. It was recorded well before he knew Harry.
@samuraisam100 Do you know the documentary about him? there he says that he came up with the idea of this song when he was on the phone waiting, that's why you hear the beep beep beep ;)

Anyone hearing Elliott Smith here? If you are looking for Nilsson reincarnated then that's him. Try Figure 8.

Beautiful. For a man so young to have such an emotional and intelligent depth is rare. He was way before his time.

It just occurred to me this was uploaded the 9th of September.

I wish everything on youTube sounded this good! Wow!
Mr. Nilsson is obviously brilliant, but I grew up listening to the Three Dog Night version, and still prefer that.
