Bush is a helluva lot better than Obummer. Even in this piece. Morever it is an isolated hashed and re-hashed vid. Most of the comments here are from the idiots who elected Obama. Sorry! I guess you forgot your guy is now president and a sorry one at that. What is the name of our sitting president? I bet you don`t even to know how to spell his name correctly you widgets! Now you can get back to warcraft or something and eats some nachos why don`t ya?
So tell me about a time when you accomplished something great?
Well, umm... I don't know. I mean, I'm just... kind of on the spot here, and um... Well, I don't know.... it's kind of a tough question...Ya see...I'm sure there's got to be something...
Socialism does not work for the greedy 'powers that be' so of course they let you know that and if you are dumb or greedy too you'll go along with it. Hitler was a fascist and an imperialist. I'm confident people with socialist ideas do not harbour similar tendencies.
Scott McClelland's book, "What Happened?" actually mentioned this specific question, and the mindset McClelland was in as he watched his president stumble and fumble his way through it was grim, at best.
"Hmm. I wish you'd given me this written question ahead of time so I could plan for it."
This does not seem to me to be the most difficult question to answer. A president and commander-in-chief must constantly be made aware of mistakes people perceive him to have made. To stand there and simply offer feebly "I can't think of any" is incredibly lame and disingenuous to say the least, and more likely dishonest and manipulative.
And that situation is fine when he's around family and friends. But when you have the president of the most powerful nation on earth who finds it a challenge to construct a meaningful sentence that communicates an idea of any real value, then that is deeply troubling. If Bush comes across as a bit backward, simple and uneducated to the citizens of the USA, then how on earth must he come across to the nations upon whom the "roap map" to peace depends?
"Maybe I'm not quick as quick on my feet as I should be..."
He means he is not good thinking on his feet. We know he's not the quickest. But his mouth certainly seems to be quicker than his mind, that's for sure!
Maybe this verbal quality of Bush has been tolerated because it's kinda like the crazy uncle that can't talk straight because he's had too much to drink - you're not quite sure what he means, but it doesn't really matter because he means well.
"...I don't want to sound like I made no mistakes. I'm confident I have..."
He is "confident he has? What an odd word choice. "sure", "positive", "certain" and "know" spring to mind. But the word "confident" is interesting because Bush is trying, while handling a difficult question, to still project the image of a confident commander-in-chief.
"You put me under the spot here..."
Does he mean he's been put on the spot, or put under the spotlight? More mixed metaphors!
When Bush said "John, I'm sure historians will look back and say 'Gosh, he coulda done it better this way or that way'....ahh....", what did he mean by "it"? I think this quite strongly indicates that Bush held in his mind a definite subject relating to mistakes he know he has made, but did chose to not discuss them; rather he continued hiding them, as seems evident with his shifty behaviour (looking off into the distance, shaking his head, stalling, etc.)
Why would Bush have to plan for this question? It suggests that he would have liked for some other of his staff to prepare answers. Another alternative I can think of is that Bush knows he's not quick at thinking; in which case a more honest answer would be something to the effect of "That is an important question. I'm not good at thinking on my feet, so please give me a few minutes to think about the answer and I'll give it to you" and then honor that promise and deliver the answer.
sorry to say, but the US is not a success in domestic politics.. it's poverty rate and income equality only qualifies to comparison with Mali and other african nations. capitalism is not a solution!
in addition to that, Hitler gained success because of his socialist thoughts were actually very successful. that his nationalist thoughts where horrible, has nothing to do with socialism
you're kidding right? the facts are in... what was the reason for us going to war with Iraq? How's the economy right now? the mess with the economy didn't start on January 20th, 2009... History has already judged...
The economy, stupid? I put the blame on Barney Frank & Chris Dodd! They FORCED the banks to make 'politically correct' loans to people that could NEVER payback those loans! People on section 8 shouldn't have gotten those big mortgages! How is that Bush's fault? Just be glad Bush kept your Liberal asses safe for 7 years after 9/11!
yes Barney Frank and Chris Dodd are the ONLY people who caused this BIG financial collapse, oh forgive me... you still haven't answered my other questions. By the way, my liberal ass is fighting for people like you so spare me. oh yeah... I'm not a liberal.
I've just come in from the IMDb W message boards... great to see the scene as it really happened, no emotional score, no manipulative camera angles and lighting... Bush looks like a human being here.
This is great they have this on youtube.. this is something Bush has a problem with, he knows he has made mistakes, but he doesn't admit it. The way he thinks is, if you're acting on a hunch and you surround yourself with war profiteers, then impulsive behavior is your forte. His mistakes were acting on misinformation from his shady staff, and not questioning the situation, not coming up with the best options.. bush is gullible and isn't too swift when it comes to handling situations.
Also, I think Oliver Stone does give him credit for being charming-- in a weird, awkward way, although there is really no excuse for his lack of interest in thinking, or his inability to do so.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I just watched this scene recreated on "W" and felt obliged to youtube it. This really isn't as bad as it was made to look on Oliver Stone's film.
You guys should compare the 2 side by side. I'm not a Bush fan but I think the media and his haters really do a fine job of making him appear more stupid and less charismatic than he really was.
Bush was a great politician and very charming - he charmed Texas and the American public quite well for a long time. He should at least get credit 4 that
I did the same thing-- (found this after 'W') I think the interesting thing that Oliver Stone did was emphasize this moment after a lifetime of mistakes (including a god-awful war), in the film it seems like he is overwhelmed by mistakes-- he can't begin to articulate it. I don't think that specific part in the film is intended to make him look stupid-- if anything he comes off as more self-aware than the real guy.
R u kidding? this guy's nuts!, he gave a shit about the global enviromental problem during all his presidency, he invaded Irak with no real motives but oil domination, killing innocent civilians including childrens no counting american soldiers, just to start with something, come on!!, you don't have to think that hard to come up with some mistakes!!!!
it still blows my mind how that fucking coward dodged the draft but yet was so quick to lie and go start a pointless war and all he can do is say sorry. what he needs to do is take all his money he made from all the oil he stole and give it to the families that lost loved ones in his daddys war that he continued. then serve time in prison for all the deaths he caused for our soldiers... THEY WERE KIDS YOU CHILD MURDERING SON OF A BITCH!!!
It's just a matter of time before President Obama is ridiculed as much as former President Bush. It's easy to criticize someone whose every action is viewed under a microscope. At least Obama has the ability to orate magnificently, so I do not think there will be much material from that aspect of his term(s) in office.
I like Obama's view of international affairs. Countries can work together to achieve the common goal of peace and justice. Every country has the right to govern itself in the way it sees fit. By being how you would want other countries to be, you set a fine example and show that we can work together and that we will not tolerate injustice. And yet still be strong in defense. We can protect justice and freedom and we can work together in this common cause. We can be civil and diplomatic.
sometimes i feel sorry for the guy... sometimes... i mean you gotta think at the end of the day all the shit that rolls into his head.,... how everyone hates him... im not talking a few ppl, im talking the entire planet... thats rough.
Americans are not going to hide in our fort and led the Indians circle. We ride out and gun them down. you have to snigger at the ignorance of some yanks, the quote above coming from swansandpussys reminds me of a place called the alamo where they did just that, maybe because the indians were mexicans and had real guns.grow up usa and embrace the planet.
Hm. I'm no Bush supporter, but...I would venture to guess that being the president, that going through all of that...I know how you feel, George. Did I damage my family's legacy? Was Iraq a mistake? Did I pick the wrong people? Was I too blind to really see where I was going with this? Tons of questions. Little time for answers. Even less time for the American people to have patience. You're a good man, George. You just weren't right for the Presidency.
I think he dealt with the question fairly well considering...it's ridiculous question for someone to have to pinpoint one particular mistake as the worst one they have made!
What's the worst mistake you've made in your life?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHA...PRICELESS PRICELESS! hahahahahahaha. That was just as funny as the shoe throwing incident recently. Take 5 stars...in tribute to the worse president to run this country into the ground.
Wow I can't believe he can't think of 5 mistakes off the top of his head. He has so many mistakes he could go on with that question for like 45 minutes. WORST PRESIDENT WE HAVE EVER HAD not even close.
Despite all the things being said about President Bush. I think he doesn't get enough credits for what he did for Africa, and as an African I am appreciative of that. Don't get me wrong, he made a terrible mistake in going in Iraq , but Americans should give him more credits for he did in African with Pepfer, the MCC, and AGOA

What mistake in Iraq? Saddam Hussein was a dictator who terrorised and brutalised his own people. Now Iraq is a democracy and the insurgents have given up violence and Sunni and Shia are now participating in the democratic process.
Mistakes were made in Iraq but the Iraq War itself was not a mistake.
If Saddam Hussein was still in power today that would be a mistake.
The only way of making sure was invading. The risk of not knowing was too serious.
And yes, I believe the United States should go around and kill all these crappy leaders and give the people of the entire world democracy and freedom.
But we can only do it one or two nations at a time without overreaching ourselves.
The most serious priorities have to be dealt with first.
Yes, I agree that killing as many terrorists and dictators is a better than negotiating the way democrats want to. But we must be careful. One reason the empire of Rome collapsed was due to overextended foreign military campaigns. Like you said, one or two nations is a good idea. But in the current financial situtation even that would be a mistake.
wow who made the united states world police??? Maybe we should worry about the murderers and violent crime going on and issues in our own country first. Protect our borders first..secure our airports, trains, buses first. Then we will be better off..not by starting war with people.

The United States made itself the world's police. Do you think they need to ask the persmission of pussy Europeans, Russian neo-Stalinists, Chinese Reds, Iranian Mullahs or third world tin pot dictators?
The world can kiss our ass and like it.
Americans are not going to hide in our fort and led the Indians circle. We ride out and gun them down.
Yeeha! And when we're done, we ride off into the sunset to the cheering of the townsfolk.
Interesting isn't into, how the theme of 'the frontier' permeates American culture. Out to kill the inherently inferior barbarians that surround us, we know that they are incapable of being civilized like us, so we have to do these things for them;
Non-American's aren't really people after all; Americans are the only real humans. These European pussies and them Damned Commies are goin straigh to hell.
Any society that is undemocratic, where individual human rights and liberties are not respected, denied and trampled is by definition an uncivilised barbaric society and is inherently inferior.
Negotiation does not work with tyrants, dictators, terrorists and fanatics.
There is a great saying, 'for evil to succeed, good men must do nothing'. While we all like to bash on America for being world police, the reality is the world would be a very dark place in their absence. Whilst they have often supported corrupt despots in the 3rd world, they also effectively stopped soviet/chinese communism from crushing democracy underfoot once and for all. You only need to look at Munich in '38 to see what the price is for not facing evil head on.
Looking back, I'm beginning to think that I should've been more supportive of this guy. I believe that he's made TONS of bad decisions throughout his presidency, but he IS our leader. As an american, maybe I should'nt have been so harsh when discussing President Bush, really. I believe the Iraq war was more for his own personal interests and it's put our military in a tough spot. That's been one of the areas I've criticized him on most. But he IS our leader for the time being. Oh yeah, GO OBAMA!
A tough spot?? You call the deaths of 100 000 people "A tough spot"??
The people who voted for this man should hang their heads in shame, as should the people who didn't protest when he casually bought his way in to power. There is no way he should have even been in that position. Where is the democracy in the US? I seriously hope Obama makes some lasting changes and turn this place into a true democracy.
I disagree about Stone's film being well-acted in this moment. Brolin played W well, but at this final scene moment, he went too "Hollywood" and wasn't as egregiously condescending or evasive as the real George W. Death.
I'd like to have seen this without the cut and all the way to the end. It cuts off. Why? Does he go to the next question? Does he walk away? Or does he say something meaningful. We can't tell because it wasn't complete.
Scott McClellan's book describes it. Bush then talks about knowing what he knows now, he'd still have gone to Afghanistan and thinks he did the right thing taking out Saddam. The answer is pretty much the total opposite of what Dickerson was asking him.
"i wish you would have given me this written question" with the quotes. the first hit will be the actual transcript from the press conference so you can see what else was said. nothing meaningful, trust me.
ya i agree with Nicos...wanted to compare it to Brolin's performance in "W" to see how much they were exaggerating his performance...but I think Brolin actually looks more smooth than the real W
I just saw this scene in a preview of Oliver Stone's film "W", so I wanted to compare it to the original. The actor comes out looking less terrible. Condolleezza is too pretty as played by Thandie Newton too!
There is a fascinating account of this press conference in Scott McClellans book "What Happened" . S SM is off camera squirming and tense wishing he could shout out an answer for Dumbya
I used to have a lot of confidence in my country to make good choices. However, after the last two presidential elections, I've lost faith in my country's ability to look after and take care of itself. George W. Bush has done nothing, but run this wonderful country into the ground. Now, I'm having to swollow my pride and my self-respect to work under HIS command, fight for something I don't believe in, just to make something of myself. THANKS REPUBLICAN ASSHOLES!!
a country gets the government it deserves! His stupidity is equalled only by the americans who voted him in not once, but twice. I hope that they don't do more of the same by voting republican this year.
Maybe I would if I had millions of dollars and a fundraising network to back me up. Oh and it would probably help if my dad was a former president too.
"I don't want to sound like I've made no mistakes; I'm confident I have"... I just haven't...ah, heh..ya just put me under the spot here and..maybe I'm just not as quick on my feet as I should be in coming up with one"
Bush and Dick will buy all the History Book Publishing Companies so they will manipulate what is taught to the gullible youth. There have been more coverups by these two clowns. Impeach Bush Now! And fire any senator and congressmen that won't Impeach.
were in the middle of a war, i think taking our leader right now would be stupid, and bush isnt that bad, i dont like him, hes OK. There has been worse presidents!!! like Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixson, and Johnson in 1964-1969!
What war? this war is making no sense now.. If he's not that bad of a president, i think you need to take a good look at your paycheck. He only looks after the rich. The middle class and poor are screwed. He's done nothing good for this country. Too much negativity going on now a days, nothing positive. Peoples' attitudes have changed, due to struggling to get by in life. But some people still thinks he's the best president ever.
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." - Theodore Roosevelt
George Bush would be a STAR if he ever starred in the Monty Pythons. This entire administration is like a black Monty Python scetch. cheers mate, thanks for the war.

Socialism does not work for the greedy 'powers that be' so of course they let you know that and if you are dumb or greedy too you'll go along with it. Hitler was a fascist and an imperialist. I'm confident people with socialist ideas do not harbour similar tendencies.
rasputinsdayoff 2 years ago
Scott McClelland's book, "What Happened?" actually mentioned this specific question, and the mindset McClelland was in as he watched his president stumble and fumble his way through it was grim, at best.
Veishan 2 years ago
Part 1:6
EuroKiwiUK 2 years ago
Part 6:6
And that situation is fine when he's around family and friends. But when you have the president of the most powerful nation on earth who finds it a challenge to construct a meaningful sentence that communicates an idea of any real value, then that is deeply troubling. If Bush comes across as a bit backward, simple and uneducated to the citizens of the USA, then how on earth must he come across to the nations upon whom the "roap map" to peace depends?
EuroKiwiUK 2 years ago
Part 5:6
"Maybe I'm not quick as quick on my feet as I should be..."
He means he is not good thinking on his feet. We know he's not the quickest. But his mouth certainly seems to be quicker than his mind, that's for sure!
Maybe this verbal quality of Bush has been tolerated because it's kinda like the crazy uncle that can't talk straight because he's had too much to drink - you're not quite sure what he means, but it doesn't really matter because he means well.
EuroKiwiUK 2 years ago
Part 4:6
"...I don't want to sound like I made no mistakes. I'm confident I have..."
He is "confident he has? What an odd word choice. "sure", "positive", "certain" and "know" spring to mind. But the word "confident" is interesting because Bush is trying, while handling a difficult question, to still project the image of a confident commander-in-chief.
"You put me under the spot here..."
Does he mean he's been put on the spot, or put under the spotlight? More mixed metaphors!
EuroKiwiUK 2 years ago
Part 3:6
When Bush said "John, I'm sure historians will look back and say 'Gosh, he coulda done it better this way or that way'....ahh....", what did he mean by "it"? I think this quite strongly indicates that Bush held in his mind a definite subject relating to mistakes he know he has made, but did chose to not discuss them; rather he continued hiding them, as seems evident with his shifty behaviour (looking off into the distance, shaking his head, stalling, etc.)
EuroKiwiUK 2 years ago
Part 2:6
Why would Bush have to plan for this question? It suggests that he would have liked for some other of his staff to prepare answers. Another alternative I can think of is that Bush knows he's not quick at thinking; in which case a more honest answer would be something to the effect of "That is an important question. I'm not good at thinking on my feet, so please give me a few minutes to think about the answer and I'll give it to you" and then honor that promise and deliver the answer.

Still, I loved the movie : )

He should at least get credit 4 that
MikeStanley4 3 years ago
I did the same thing-- (found this after 'W') I think the interesting thing that Oliver Stone did was emphasize this moment after a lifetime of mistakes (including a god-awful war), in the film it seems like he is overwhelmed by mistakes-- he can't begin to articulate it. I don't think that specific part in the film is intended to make him look stupid-- if anything he comes off as more self-aware than the real guy.
cholerymorbilus 3 years ago 2

It's just a matter of time before President Obama is ridiculed as much as former President Bush. It's easy to criticize someone whose every action is viewed under a microscope. At least Obama has the ability to orate magnificently, so I do not think there will be much material from that aspect of his term(s) in office.
TheStormcrow2 3 years ago
I like Obama's view of international affairs. Countries can work together to achieve the common goal of peace and justice. Every country has the right to govern itself in the way it sees fit. By being how you would want other countries to be, you set a fine example and show that we can work together and that we will not tolerate injustice. And yet still be strong in defense. We can protect justice and freedom and we can work together in this common cause. We can be civil and diplomatic.

He didn't have WMDs and there are plenty of other countries with human rights abuse with crappy leaders, why didn't he invade them?
TheLeardMan 3 years ago 2
The only way of making sure was invading. The risk of not knowing was too serious.
And yes, I believe the United States should go around and kill all these crappy leaders and give the people of the entire world democracy and freedom.
But we can only do it one or two nations at a time without overreaching ourselves.
The most serious priorities have to be dealt with first.
swansandtyphus 3 years ago
Yes, I agree that killing as many terrorists and dictators is a better than negotiating the way democrats want to. But we must be careful. One reason the empire of Rome collapsed was due to overextended foreign military campaigns. Like you said, one or two nations is a good idea. But in the current financial situtation even that would be a mistake.

Yeeha! And when we're done, we ride off into the sunset to the cheering of the townsfolk.
Interesting isn't into, how the theme of 'the frontier' permeates American culture. Out to kill the inherently inferior barbarians that surround us, we know that they are incapable of being civilized like us, so we have to do these things for them;
Non-American's aren't really people after all; Americans are the only real humans. These European pussies and them Damned Commies are goin straigh to hell.

Any society that is undemocratic, where individual human rights and liberties are not respected, denied and trampled is by definition an uncivilised barbaric society and is inherently inferior.
Negotiation does not work with tyrants, dictators, terrorists and fanatics.
swansandtyphus 3 years ago

06cbrown 3 years ago
A tough spot?? You call the deaths of 100 000 people "A tough spot"??
The people who voted for this man should hang their heads in shame, as should the people who didn't protest when he casually bought his way in to power. There is no way he should have even been in that position. Where is the democracy in the US? I seriously hope Obama makes some lasting changes and turn this place into a true democracy.

Scott McClellan's book describes it. Bush then talks about knowing what he knows now, he'd still have gone to Afghanistan and thinks he did the right thing taking out Saddam. The answer is pretty much the total opposite of what Dickerson was asking him.
