  • Malaika, which means "Angel" in Swahili, was a song first recorded by Kenyan musician Fadhili William and his band Jambo Boys in 1960. It was later re-recorded at Equator Sound Studios by the British-born Kenyan music promoter Charles Worrod, who marketed the ballad to eventually becoming an internationally acclaimed song.

  • Superb song,With love from Romania!

Vitale

  • @Unionof666666 she is not singing about her mother, its a love song that was done by Fadhili William who was a musician who lived and died in a Kenyan Slum. A celebrated musician. The song has been done by Bonny M and Milliam makeba too. So it has nothing to do our mother its a swahili love song.

Malaika is Angle and Ningekuoa means I would have married you. I dont think any of her fans want to marry their mother.

Original song check out it was done by Fadhili Williams. he also did Tausi

  • @SuperJulia74 point of correction, he never died in a slum but his own home though poor man he was

  • Absolutely fantastic. I have to keep coming back to listen/watch Angelique singing this song here, as she sings it so awesomely.

  • Absolutely fantastic. I have to keep coming back to listen/watch..

  • I don't just like this song, I love it. A song for every woman to sing to her mother. It is all about the love, sacrifices and protection every spirited mother will give to her offspring.

  • the camera man was so close

  • Of her various versions of Malaika, this version tops the lot. What a performance of a lifetime.

    bises

  • I have been listening to her music for years. She has been one of my favourite African vocalists for over 15 years.. When I saw a documentary on her life and watched her sing this song to her Mother and openly talk about her heritage with pride, I was even more impressed and bought yet another of her CDs just for this song!!!!

Angelique Kidjo is The Human and Female Pride of Africa!!!

  • @unionof666666 I agree, she is fantastic.

  • God bless you Angélique

  • A tribute to her Mother and all Mothers in the world. Please check the english translation as she is singing about her Mother. This is a beautiful song of respect for the maternal influence in her life.

  • JUst the best version I have heard. She brings the feel and mood of the song.Music does not require language as I dont understand a word, but still one of the secular songs I have heard.KEEP IT UP,Angelique.

  • beautiful song :)

  • to equinox still doesn't play right for me. even when the volume was so low it played ok. do u know where i can get a cd of this ?

  • Malaika is the name of my daughter and i love this song

  • Angélique Kidjo is railing against the European critics that have accused her of making "inauthentic" African music. "Who are they to tell me what is African and what isn't?" says Kidjo, her voice rising in indignation as she thumps the meeting room table of her record company's office, in a way that suggests it might well be a substitute for a music critic's head. "Did they grow up in Benin and hear the music I heard? No? Then shut up!"

  • Volume is to low unfortunately

  • wow, what an amazing voice, and a great but sad ballad!

  • Heart and soul. Thrills my core.

  • please, someone put this song (malaika) by abgelique back on you tube. it's been down for awhile now. i really miss hearing it.

  • @o4SHOTo I'm not sure what the problem is ... it is playing OK for me. It's true that the volume is low, so perhaps you should just turn your speakers WAY up. I hope you can get it to work because it's such a beautifual performance. ~Renee~

  • @equinoxrox still won't paly on my computer. even when the volume was so low it played ok. do u know where i can get a cd of this ?

  • This is powerfully moving.

  • language/pronounciation is irrevelant. music such as this is soul/universal...i can feel it! wonderful artist

  • Comment removed

  • I LUV this song....

  • kidjo is a great singer, i only wish she had done more homework on her swahili pronounciation. it sucks.

nice voice but jameni angejifunza matamshi ya kiswahili kwanza.

  • Beautiful ! Thanks for posting !

  • how beautiful

  • viva mama africa

  • fantastic song. like this version best

  • Tonight, when I first listen to this song by angelique kidjo, I was like what she's doing to my favourite song with her MALAIKAAAAAAAAA!!!! But from now on, I think I've played it more than 30 times! Guess my brain had to forget just for a moment miriam makeba! Lol! I JUST LOVE ITTTTTTT!!!!!!! This concert took place in senegal my beloved country!!!! :-)

  • @TatyjaK Lol. Me too. I was like WHATTTT. Then I came back to it over and over again. But I can't forget Mama Afrika Miriam. No wayyy.

  • A song written by our own Marehemu Fadhili Williams, and the song has gone international. Her version is ok, but some words are not Swahili at all, they are a corruption of Swahili and Yoruba (or what is that language?)

  • thats interesting, in Arabic angel is Malak :P

  • @Jnvlv247 and swahili is a mixture of Arab and Bantu

  • SUPERBE !

  • Malaika, nakupenda Malaika. Malaika, nakupenda Malaika. Nami nifanyeje, kijana mwenzio, Nashindwa na mali sina, we, Ningekuoa Malaika. Nashindwa na mali sina, we, Ningekuoa Malaika. • Beautiful singing and song.

    Erika Vilana.

  • this is a GREAT version

  • this song is from 1950,dedicated to a girl.

  • beautiful and touching.....

  • Sikuku Njema!

Pretty good version of this song. I like it sang traditionally rather than a pop song.

Merci

  • It has been one week since I came from Kenya and I me reminder of the boy which sang me this song in the Indian ocean it was so wonderful and i miss him so muchhhhhhhhh...great great great song i love this version.

    Nami nifanyeje, kijana mwenzio

Nashindwa na mali sina we Ningekuoa Malaika

Nashindwa na mali sina we Ningekuoa Malaika

  • j'adore, c'est magnifique ;-))

  • great voice!

  • i'm from kenya.i like some of angelique songs but this version of malaika is somehow too fast,it's supposed to be slow and with rhythm

  • I've heard faster.. but I think the a and i in ai are supposed to be more separate, not blended like in other languages.

  • chapeau ! universelle !

  • She is just so beautiful. I wish more people were as graceful as she is.

  • wow her voice is amazing

  • Magnifique.

  • beautiful :-)

  • Angelique is performing a free concert in Brasília on the Esplanada de Ministérios tonight. Should I go?

  • Simplemente conmovedor.. brillante... Maravilloso......

    <3

  • this is better than the original.word iz bond.

  • A fantastic arrangement of the "MALAIKA" sheet-music (including the original rolling-bass), PLUS the lyrics, rhymed translations, chords and programme notes about the song, can be found by Googling 'konkani songbook'. Really fabulous!

  • Fantastic. ABsolutely fantastic.

Never mind the goddamn linguistics...how does she make you feel?

Like Singer Angelique Kidjo, and the song "Malaika", since i heard her and it the first time....

    Great!

  • Nice rendition by Angelique. But if you understand Swahili youll notice that most of the sentences she says are non-nonsensical. It's almost as if she is singing a completely different language. Still very good though. She captures the emotional parts of the song really really nicely

  • I agree with you in part EyeOfTheStorm---The song is still understandable, but as a Kiswahili speaker, it is a little painful to hear the mis-emphasis of some words, example Mala-iiiiiikaaaa, instead of Maaaahlaika (and of course not gettting some words correct). She does capture the sentiment of the song beautifully even though I cannot bring myself to hear the entire song.

  • @Eye0fTheStorm Its not so much nonsensical as very unusual intonation. The words are correct but its a totally foreign language to her so I would give her a pass on that.

  • Oh My GOD!!!!!! Goosebumps....Kippevel.

  • heartbreaking....

  • I keep coming back to the place that entrances me! This is just so magnificent! Malaika, My poetic Angel!

  • i love all african traditional songs because music is from Africa.I am of Indian but i love African culture and ppl..To all Malikas in Africa!!!!

  • pesso is troubling me, malika otherwise, i would have married you!

  • Das ist doch nicht traurig!!!!!???

  • 0:55 - 1:06 was awesome! Especially 1:04-1:06!!!

  • ahha, I was born in Seychelles, which is quite close to the east coast of Africa, so my family has this huge affinity with the continent. I grew up listening to the logozo cd, it was always playing in the background growing up, so every now and then when i hear one of its tracks i just melt. C'est tres bien!

  • This is such a lovely song, Would be so sweet having the one you love sing this to you. OH YEA!!! Reaches down deep in your soul.

  • sweet voice.

    i love it.

  • Nakupenda Malaika, Nakupenda Sana!

worst joke ever, but I would happily drink tchoukotuo with Madame Kidjo any day.

  • very good - thanks

  • Fantastic! Thanks for posting!!!

  • Bless you

  • i listen to this everynight in bed

  • i sing this every day in the shower. and since it is so hot, i take cold afternoon showers and it kinda gives it a better effect than hot showers. i know. doesnt make sense, but its true.

  • She's an amazing performer with a beautiful voice
