Angelique is a brilliant performer, and this song gives her a chance to show it to the world as few other songs I have heard her sing. This is one stunning performance.
There is some great music coming out of Africa today. This bodes well for the future.
I dont know about how any other African American feels when they hear African Music but my spirit can feel it i love it African music is good for my soul i am no longer captive by evil people that abuse my African Spirit one time they hug from a tree my spirit returned to my Homeland Jah Bless All the African Singers keep sing in are language i would love to sing in my own language oneday and put some fire in it.
I saw Angélique perform this song at the African Music Festival in Delft in 1992 (yes, yes...old man) and although my kiSwahili is as rusty as Angélique's the emotions of this song were hitting me like a hammer and water was coming to my eyes.
Malaika, which means "Angel" in Swahili, was a song first recorded by Kenyan musician Fadhili William and his band Jambo Boys in 1960. It was later re-recorded at Equator Sound Studios by the British-born Kenyan music promoter Charles Worrod, who marketed the ballad to eventually becoming an internationally acclaimed song.

@Unionof666666 she is not singing about her mother, its a love song that was done by Fadhili William who was a musician who lived and died in a Kenyan Slum. A celebrated musician. The song has been done by Bonny M and Milliam makeba too. So it has nothing to do our mother its a swahili love song.
Malaika is Angle and Ningekuoa means I would have married you. I dont think any of her fans want to marry their mother.
Original song check out it was done by Fadhili Williams. he also did Tausi
I don't just like this song, I love it. A song for every woman to sing to her mother. It is all about the love, sacrifices and protection every spirited mother will give to her offspring.
I have been listening to her music for years. She has been one of my favourite African vocalists for over 15 years.. When I saw a documentary on her life and watched her sing this song to her Mother and openly talk about her heritage with pride, I was even more impressed and bought yet another of her CDs just for this song!!!!
Angelique Kidjo is The Human and Female Pride of Africa!!!
A tribute to her Mother and all Mothers in the world. Please check the english translation as she is singing about her Mother. This is a beautiful song of respect for the maternal influence in her life.

@Rmnnnic Thanks Rmnnic heard the version recomended by you love it and the duet version by her, thank you ,bro. But this version has got me by my goat..lol
Angélique Kidjo is railing against the European critics that have accused her of making "inauthentic" African music. "Who are they to tell me what is African and what isn't?" says Kidjo, her voice rising in indignation as she thumps the meeting room table of her record company's office, in a way that suggests it might well be a substitute for a music critic's head. "Did they grow up in Benin and hear the music I heard? No? Then shut up!"
Samba Pati feat. Roy Hargrove - African childhood Music Video

@o4SHOTo I'm not sure what the problem is ... it is playing OK for me. It's true that the volume is low, so perhaps you should just turn your speakers WAY up. I hope you can get it to work because it's such a beautifual performance. ~Renee~

It has been one week since I came from Kenya and I me reminder of the boy which sang me this song in the Indian ocean it was so wonderful and i miss him so muchhhhhhhhh...great great great song i love this version.
A fantastic arrangement of the "MALAIKA" sheet-music (including the original rolling-bass), PLUS the lyrics, rhymed translations, chords and programme notes about the song, can be found by Googling 'konkani songbook'. Really fabulous!
Nice rendition by Angelique. But if you understand Swahili youll notice that most of the sentences she says are non-nonsensical. It's almost as if she is singing a completely different language. Still very good though. She captures the emotional parts of the song really really nicely
I agree with you in part EyeOfTheStorm---The song is still understandable, but as a Kiswahili speaker, it is a little painful to hear the mis-emphasis of some words, example Mala-iiiiiikaaaa, instead of Maaaahlaika (and of course not gettting some words correct). She does capture the sentiment of the song beautifully even though I cannot bring myself to hear the entire song.
@Eye0fTheStorm Its not so much nonsensical as very unusual intonation. The words are correct but its a totally foreign language to her so I would give her a pass on that.
ahha, I was born in Seychelles, which is quite close to the east coast of Africa, so my family has this huge affinity with the continent. I grew up listening to the logozo cd, it was always playing in the background growing up, so every now and then when i hear one of its tracks i just melt. C'est tres bien!
i sing this every day in the shower. and since it is so hot, i take cold afternoon showers and it kinda gives it a better effect than hot showers. i know. doesnt make sense, but its true.

i'm from kenya.i like some of angelique songs but this version of malaika is somehow too fast,it's supposed to be slow and with rhythm
rawkid30i 2 years ago 3
I've heard faster.. but I think the a and i in ai are supposed to be more separate, not blended like in other languages.

A fantastic arrangement of the "MALAIKA" sheet-music (including the original rolling-bass), PLUS the lyrics, rhymed translations, chords and programme notes about the song, can be found by Googling 'konkani songbook'. Really fabulous!

Fantastic. ABsolutely fantastic.
Never mind the goddamn linguistics...how does she make you feel?

Hab das Lied immer gemocht, aber auch die Sängerin, seit ich sie das erste Mal gehört habe.
Like Singer Angelique Kidjo, and the song "Malaika", since i heard her and it the first time....
Great!

Nice rendition by Angelique. But if you understand Swahili youll notice that most of the sentences she says are non-nonsensical. It's almost as if she is singing a completely different language. Still very good though. She captures the emotional parts of the song really really nicely
Eye0fTheStorm 2 years ago 5
