I usually pick on death metal for being uncreative and generic as all hell, but if you think you can pick up a pair of sticks and just play at these speeds cleanly the only person you're fooling is yourself.
I'm a drummer and wish I had those sort of chops, even if it was only to put them to use otherwise... To get to this speed in a year, you'd do NOTHING but speed/endurance exercises, and even then you'd likely be uneven and probably have no groove or creativity either.

I was able to blast when I first started playing, kind of fast even, but only after years of developing the skill was I able to really go fast with a much tighter and more controlled sound while still maintaining enough stamina to go the distance. To be a great death metal drummer takes a lot of dedication. The same as developing whatever other style of drumming.

@mootbooxle It's all about agression. I think you're appreciating the riffage and drumming for the technicality, which is no problem! But for example in this band, the riffs aren't written to impress, more to evoke emotions of agression, and above all, make you want to tear shit up! The vocals are just another layer of this wall of power. Another style to the ear of a death metaller may clash or detract from the song. I mean, you can't really picture this track with clean singing can you :P

@blastbeatmark A steel snare with very tight tuning on the top and bottom head is the key. A good dampening head such as the Remo Powerstroke 3 or Emperor X will help cut out those nasty overtones and leave you with that grindy 'TANG'!
I also have a Black Panther steel snare, but with the Remo Coated Ambassador/Evans G1 .. I had a similar sound in the beginning, but after some time and changing the head, I can't figure out how to get there again. How tight did you tune top and bottom head? And how tight is the snare chain? Because my drum is missing that nice "dang" right now and I would love to get back there again. And I know that it's not the heads fault, because it once sounded very nice...
@bumi84 I don't know how to describe exactly. Just get the top head pretty damn tight and the bottom one maybe a touch tighter. The snare wires should be failry tight too. Head may need dampening unless it's built in like an emperor x. Apart from that you'll just have to experiment man, sorry.
So the bottom head is even tighter than the top one? That means, that the tone should be even higher when you tap it with your stick while tuning? .. alright, I'll just give it a try then. My top head is quite tight already, so I'll just try tuning the bottom head only a little more. Thanks anyway

how does one judge death metal music? I never listen to this genre of music and am curious. When i compare this to rock and alternative music i think this is trash and that i can not see the appeal of it. but if i wanted to make an educated analysis of this what would i compare it to and how do i judge it? Is it based on the speed of the playing or loudness or how un-understandable the screaming is? Please help me understand.
@MMan633 You don't judge death metal any differently to any other genre of music. You just like it or you don't. I can see why you wouldn't see the appeal, it's not mainstream music. You're jumping in at the deep end here, this is full on brutality, no holes barred. You have to develop an understanding of the elements which the genre is comprised of, such as the vocals, speed of the drumming etc. Once an understanding is developed, you can appriciate, and learn to love death metal.

@MMan633 Another thing that is important is there's many kinds of metal and death metal and branches from both that relate. Technical death metal, one thing that's important is how tight it is. In black metal it's how dark and evil it is, in average death metal it's the quality of the riffs, vox, and skill+speed of drums. Speed isn't always first cause if u can't match the beat then there's no real song. Eventually u develop an ear for metal vox, it' like another language, minus terrible vocals

@blastbeatmark A steel snare with very tight tuning on the top and bottom head is the key. A good dampening head such as the Remo Powerstroke 3 or Emperor X will help cut out those nasty overtones and leave you with that grindy 'TANG'!

I also have a Black Panther steel snare, but with the Remo Coated Ambassador/Evans G1 .. I had a similar sound in the beginning, but after some time and changing the head, I can't figure out how to get there again. How tight did you tune top and bottom head? And how tight is the snare chain? Because my drum is missing that nice "dang" right now and I would love to get back there again. And I know that it's not the heads fault, because it once sounded very nice...

@bumi84 I don't know how to describe exactly. Just get the top head pretty damn tight and the bottom one maybe a touch tighter. The snare wires should be failry tight too. Head may need dampening unless it's built in like an emperor x. Apart from that you'll just have to experiment man, sorry.

So the bottom head is even tighter than the top one? That means, that the tone should be even higher when you tap it with your stick while tuning? .. alright, I'll just give it a try then. My top head is quite tight already, so I'll just try tuning the bottom head only a little more. Thanks anyway

I would totally play my drums longer everyday if they didn't suck that much. I wanna buy a new one. I got a 5 piece for like 200 bucks used. It kinda blows, but hey, I guess they'll work :D I can still come up with some sick beats.

how does one judge death metal music? I never listen to this genre of music and am curious. When i compare this to rock and alternative music i think this is trash and that i can not see the appeal of it. but if i wanted to make an educated analysis of this what would i compare it to and how do i judge it? Is it based on the speed of the playing or loudness or how un-understandable the screaming is? Please help me understand.

@MMan633 You don't judge death metal any differently to any other genre of music. You just like it or you don't. I can see why you wouldn't see the appeal, it's not mainstream music. You're jumping in at the deep end here, this is full on brutality, no holes barred. You have to develop an understanding of the elements which the genre is comprised of, such as the vocals, speed of the drumming etc. Once an understanding is developed, you can appriciate, and learn to love death metal.

There are many complexities to this genre, the speed, the schreech, the growl, double bass, low tuning, im sorry, but all of that makes me happy, I don't care if you like it. 10% of the whole "death metal" idea is the brutality of it, the exhilarating pulse of the beats
the other 90% is the idea of the IMMENSE amount of talent it takes to play this kind of stuff-i mean years and years and YEARS of practice and experience
the speed, loudless, and aggression that goes into it only adds to the 10%
non-mainstream death metal takes musicianship to the absolute extremes, which is exactly why i love it
this guy is the perfect example of the kind of talent it takes

@MMan633 iv been listening to death metal for years...i think you should listen to the complexity of the music....then you try to feel it...once you feel it there is no need for a therapist ever again....you become one with the music and it moves you to become something other then yourself...something stronger.....think of it a orchestrated chaos....and you will understand it

@MMan633 Another thing that is important is there's many kinds of metal and death metal and branches from both that relate. Technical death metal, one thing that's important is how tight it is. In black metal it's how dark and evil it is, in average death metal it's the quality of the riffs, vox, and skill+speed of drums. Speed isn't always first cause if u can't match the beat then there's no real song. Eventually u develop an ear for metal vox, it' like another language, minus terrible vocals
