His is the best rendition of this concerto. Vladimir's tempo is perfect. I haven't heard anyone do quite as much justice to Rachmaninov's brilliance as Vladimir.
I love that in the part 0:58 - 1:13 Ashkenazy is letting the orchestra take the lead. Most pianists play that part as virtuoso's and the play it too loud, but here it's in perfect harmony!
Vladimir Ashkenazy is my favourite performer of the Rach 2. He plays with such emotion and passion and the music restores my soul every time. I love this version - It is like an old friend to me ♥♫♫
By far my favovrite interpretation. The first time I heared the brass-section at 6:50 so clear, simply love it. Especially at 6:16, so much energy and power. Not sleeping tonight.
I remember an interview and Vladimir Ashkenazy admitted his two favourite conductors when he was playing concertos were Mehta and Previn, also Barenboim. You can hear that Ashkenazy and Previn had total understanding making a perfect musical match.
Can u send me these tracks as well? Or can you at least tell me the name of the company and recording that you got these from? Ashkenazy playing Rachmaninoff is so close to... heaven.
It's so beautiful I can't stand it. It makes me cry every time. Ashkenzy and Previn are pure genius together. Thanks for posting!

Ashkenazy is the #1 pianist: nobody else has such a perfect phrasing, tempo, balance, technique, emotions, sound, taste, everything!

I"ve had this in an LP box-set for nearly 40 years and it's always been one of my favorites.
But i think it would be really neat if they would record them again, only this time with Previn playing the piano and Ashkenazy conducting.
That's something I'd love to hear. :))

Great playing but poor audio

I think it sounds okay. I'm wearing headphones and this sounds almost as good as how it is on my Ipod. Maybe it's your speakers or computer.

I have this same exact recording on my CD! All four piano concertos! I like how Ashkenazy and the orchestra cooperate well. It sounds so beautiful!
