  • PtelMeasOmo...thanks for the post. I absolutely felt that way...and still do. We "worked" in a village/jungle environment and had little contact with the indigenous people, but always enjoyed seeing women wearing an Ao Doi. The words to Do Ai are interesting: "Can anyone ever know how many stalks there are in a rice field? How many bends are in a river? How many layers in a cloud? Can anyone sweep the leaves of a forest?...and tell the wind to shake the trees no more?" Beautiful

  • @SerenaBay... You're welcome, and thanks again.

  • I served as Light-Weapons-Infantryman with the 25th Division (27th Regiment-Wolfhounds) in '68-'69 NW of Saigon in War Zone C and saw and experienced everything one could imagine inherent with a war. With this said (as a 19 year-old draftee), I always had a curious affinity for the Vietnamese people and continue to engage them whenever I see them. I remain embarrassed by our behavior during the war. I saw the movie when it came out, own the film and listen to "Do Ai" often. Beautiful in all.

  • @SerenaBay... I am retired USAF; but entered the military soon after the conflict in Vietnam ('75). I appreciate the sincerity in your comments. Thanks~

  • do you know who sings this? i cant find the singer and i like this version of the song the best. if i could know that would be greatly appreciated thanks

  • @sakura575... The vocal performance is credited to Thuy Trang (she passed away on September 3, 2001). I have the movie on DVD and soundtrack on CD; musicians are credited thus: Duc Thanh (dan bau, dan tranh), Jaron Lanier (bass flute, hu lu si, khaen, xan hsien), Thuy Trang (vocals), Floating Market Women's Choir (vocals), Sussan Deyhim (vocals), and Richard Horowitz (percussion, keyboards, windstrings--who also happens to be the masterful composer and producer).

  • @0984833891.. I first saw the film on the International Film Channel (IFC). Never judge a book by its cover--I'm neither Vietnamese or Thai, I'm an American male. lol~ But I do love Three Seasons. :-)

  • @PtelMeasOmo "Three Seasons" is a vietnamese film, while you seem to be from Thailand. So, how did you know it? Even in Vietnam, no many people ever watch this film.

  • The film and the soundtrack touched my heart

  • @0984833891.. Glad you got to enjoy it; it's an uplifting film with beautiful music.

  • Wonderful movie, beautiful song. Thank you very much

  • Annotations actually being used as annotations? Awesome.

  • @HarmoniousChirp... Yea, I figured annotations was a good tool for some very basic info. Thanks for "chirping in," and I hope you enjoyed the music and clips.

  • @errinnskye, you're welcome, it's a great film with *3* happy endings! :-)

  • Wonderful movie, beautiful song. Thank you.

  • @errinnskye, you're welcome, thank you too.

  • can you tell me who sings this song?,because the bich dao is beautifull, but this is so much better

  • @Tayresa... Both film and motion picture soundtrack credits show the singer's name, Thuy Trang. I'm trying to find out whether that is Trish Thuy Trang, Vietnamese pop artist--or possibly Thuy Trang, the Vietnamese actress who was killed tragically in a California automobile accident in September 2001. Will try and advise when I find out.

  • Thank you so much :D

  • @Tayresa... You're welcome! Hopefully my email will eventually be answered by the composer, Richard Horowitz.

  • I saw Three Seasons about 10 years ago when the hubby was learning the Vietnamese language. I thought it was an interesting movie. I used to listen to "Do Ai," all the time and sang it to the hubby for fun (I don't speak Vietnamese, but after listening to the song so many times, I can kind of make out the words). Now that I'm listening to the song again (after all these years), it is a very emotional song! I love it! Never felt that way before.

  • @Gobo0215 Wow very emotional for me as well I love this song and movie.

  • does anyone know where i can get the dvd of this film?

  • Maybe online rental like Netflix or Blockbuster :)

  • Yep, or maybe a place like Amazon Canada. ;-)

  • @htomnguyen... Try amazon dot com, in Canada and USA. Also, eBay. Be aware, though, the original DVD is hard to find! You will likely end up with a "licensed import edition" of the movie from Korea or Japan. (Are those bootlegs? I'm not sure. The quality isn't top notch; but they are watchable. I was lucky about a year ago--I found an original DVD on amazon Canada for 35 dollars US.)

  • When I first saw this movie I was totally spellbound. I had been in Vietnam as a soldier during the war and never had gotten to see this side of the wonderful country I was in. It makes my heart ache to go back and experience the country as it is now. I did catch some glimpses of this beauty while their, but I was to young to appreciate it at the time. Now, as I get older, I am sure I would love to travel the beautiful roads and paths of this wonderful land.

  • Omo, this is beautiful. Makes me want to watch the movie out of curiosity as love is universal anyway. Thanks for the translation. It helps alot to read it in advance. Thanks for sharing this as well. Do you know if the movie has English subtitle?

  • Yes, it has English subs, Msim. I bought a DVD made for Korean audiences which is dubbed in Korean and English. The movie was made in Vietnamese. There are several DVDs available at popular online etailers. It is beautiful...some people might say the movie's "cheesy," but I would say the actors have unpretentious qualities which made the movie even more enjoyable. :-)

  • Thank you Omo. I got it down on my next time movie list. I will check it out next time I'm at a video store.

  • You're very welcome, Msim. I first saw it on Independent Film Channel (IFC) and fell in love with it immediately. I hope you're able to find it locally; I searched all over my area and ended up settling for online. It's a "feel good" movie in every way. :-)

  • Oh, online is even better. I will search on youtube then. Thank you Omo.

  • You're welcome, thank you too, Msim!

  • do you have the lyrics to this song?

  • Not Vietnamese, unfortunately. The lyrics below are taken from English subtitles. As Kien An sings while picking lotuses: Can anyone ever know how many stalks ...are in a rice field? How many bends are in a river? How many layers are in a cloud? Can anyone sweep the leaves of a forest? And tell the wind to shake the trees no more How many leaves must a silkworm eat... ...to make a dress of colors from the past How much rain must... (end)
  • thank you :)

  • You're welcome, and I will keep trying to find the lyrics in Vietnamese, as well as other English translations. :-)

  • To Teacher Dao: Can anyone ever know How many bends are in a river? How many layers are in a cloud? Can anyone sweep the leaves of a forest? ...to shake the trees no more? How many leaves must a silkworm eat, to make a dress of colors from the past? How much rain must fall from the sky, before the ocean overflows with tears? How many years must the moon... In the middle of the night, the moon comes and waits nearby... He who can steal my heart, I will forever sing joyful songs...
