Interned at United Technologies this summer. During a visit to the PW plant, they just about plastered the "this changes everything" slogan everywhere except the bathroom. If i would to see the phrase "this changes everything" one more time. My eyes will bleed.
PrAtts!!! ????? Ummm that company should be band from making wide body engines ! They are crap! The only airline dumb enough to buy them are ual........ They should be keeped away from 777!!!!!
Hmmm I wonder those boys at rolls royce and GE are thinking when they watch this video? They are probably like "holy crap were finished" Anyways it is nice to see an old timer like pratt get their act together, for a whole I thought they had lost it and were going extinct. This engine will indeed change everything!
@youngfart40 It's easy to think this. However P & W powers King Airs, TBM 850's, Cessna Caravans... the list is endless, not to mention industrial and marine applications for turbine engines. They also powered the mighty U2 and SR71 spy planes. Your point is well-taken though, they have had a low profile in visible apps the public sees, like powering airliners. They did power the 707 though. You can't get any more old school pioneer than that. :) Welcome back P & W, welcome back.
@bagelboi66 I know that. They power just about every tiny airplane out there. I meant mainstream commercial airliners. After the legendary JT8D's and a model or 2 for the biggest boys they all but disappeared. Thats where the real money is not in caravans and king airs. You have to remember they were once the #1 engine maker now they are #3. Looks like they may actually bounce back with this one.
@youngfart40 GE has the Leap-X, as for Rolls...well they are content to soak up the wide-body market such as the A350. I hope this engine does well because Pratt dropped the ball big time with the PW6000 and PW4000. Pratt has a huge military and turbo-shaft business but commercial airliners? Not compared to GE and RR.
Look what´s happened to that RR-shit lately on the Quantas A380, I don´t thing they are as good as people thougt. Otherwise I have respect for GE, they build good engines too.
@KimmurielBaenre True, and at one time Pratt was the dominant player in that space. They had a bad run, but what is impressive is to see them pull through that bad run and turn out a game changing (potentially) product. That earned them a lot of respect from me.
@billo82 I can't take credit for it... the phrase is part of P & W's culture. It was coined in the 1960's by the guys who developed the engines for the U2 and SR-71.
@novicharged306..yup u wer right, they increases the bypass to create thrust which made the engine less noise and more environmental friendly and ofcourse the maintenance cost was reduced too...
I've never seen a bypass totally open like that... Supposedly the fan is geared to change speeds on cruise, this puts less pressure on the high pressure turbine to turn the fan, creating less NoX emissions, saving fuel and using more of the bypass air to create thrust than is used in current engines
@novicharged306 what the hell are you talking about. All the new high bypass fans are just as open. You just don't pay attention. Especially on all 777 engines.
I love how the engines say purepower on the side XD

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology:
(1) Why do we love flying?
(2) Why do we like jet engines?
(3) Why does jet engines are so attractive to us?
(4) Why do we like have more understanding about aviation technology?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)

The 747SP test plane is and ex-CAAC (old china's flag carrier) plane? The cheatline sure says so.

youngun, P & W pretty much owns the turboshaft market. Powering airliners is prestigious but really is a much smaller market.

50% less noise?...
I dunno how to feel about that..
I love the high pitched whine from the intake side and even more the thundering roar from the exhaust.. :'(

(2) Why do we enjoy to build new jet-engine?
(3) Why do we think that designing new jet-engine is a representation of creativity and innovation?
(4) Why do many of us want to build our home-make jet engine?

Welcome back to the intercontinental jet market, Pratt & Whitney. You've let General Electric and Rolls-Royce have it all to themselves for too long.
