Religion cannot contribute to a mental illness alone. Once when we are born we are already exposed to elements in which we may need to endure, this can be a form of adaptation, but relating to the mind itself, its how you interpret the issue. Think about environmental issues, social aspects such as up bringing or how you were brought up. Must I add consumerism or materialistic gain can be a mental illness as it can make one obsessive and desperate diluting the mind. Greed can be included.

As it is today the majority of the world is religious, though they disagree on the definition of "God". I'm 100% atheist, I don't believe in a God or an afterlife in the slightest, but lets say for instance you have a kid and he or she is dying and is scared of the fact they are dying and really wants to believe in an afterlife, would it be contradicting yourself to tell them there's an afterlife and that they'd see you again as a comforter?...I was raised catholic and raised to believe in God and I always felt a comfort that there was a God as a child, I think it's just a good comforter for kids

Once when we are born we are already exposed to elements in which we may need to endure, this can be a form of adaptation, but relating to the mind itself, its how you interpret the issue. Think about environmental issues, social aspects such as up bringing or how you were brought up. As it is today the majority of the world is religious, though they disagree on the definition of "God". Therefore actually a minority in world is atheist and this make atheism the exception and deviant. The existence of God or divinity is most real. I'm 100% atheist, I don't believe in a God or an afterlife in the slightest, but lets say for instance you have a kid and he or she is dying and is scared of the fact they are dying and really wants to believe in an afterlife, would it be contradicting yourself to tell them there's an afterlife and that they'd see you again as a comforter?...I was raised catholic and raised to believe in God and I always felt a comfort that there was a God as a child, I think it's just a good comforter for kids

This was why Englishmen came to the new world it started a battle between different factions of Englishmen who were represented at different times depending on if the King/Queen was Protestant or Catholic. I can see how some people could say it's a mental disorder.. Some people just need a crutch though. Something to help them look to the bright side I guess. Even if it means fooling themselves. I do agree with this tho.
And from what I know Buddhism isn't as much a religion as a set of guidelines to being a good person. There's no God, Buddha didn't want to be seen as one. The Nirvana thing is like heaven I guess but like I said it's more about respect to others and nature and shit than worship.

In my humble opinion, what we're seeing is the natural progression of the human psyche. Many years ago, one's life depended upon whether or not they believed in God. Sure, the results seem like a disorder. But it's actually normal brain processes reacting to fear, the need to belong, and answers to unanswerable questions. It's just taking a long time for it to play out. Many people today are fortunate enough to have escaped indoctrination.
